That’s to bad you decided to take it off. I had replied to you before and said how great it was. The research I did for my truck in 2017 was to have the largest catch can you can buy, because of the V8 and cold climate. I have a 5.3l with a 32oz catch can and I normally empty it every 2,500-3,000km in the subzero range, in the summer I go between oil changes with next to no fluid. Now it is black compared to the coffee and cream look in the winter. The fluid stinks like gassy carbon. Now I have been doing this from new and have accumulated over a 4L jug. So I feel that is a major boost to my longevity for my engine. The engine now has 85,000km on it. Also the engine runs very smooth at an idle, with absolutely no delays on response.
I have the same catch can on my AT4 but with the long hose on the bottom of the can for easy draining. I routed the hose between the fender liners on the passenger side and it dumps out in a very easy to access location…no opening the hood, no getting a step stool, no dealing w/ heat or cold.
I'm in Alberta, I've never had a problem with the catch cans I have on any of my vehicle current or in the past. All I have are diesels now and never an issue.
I live in Minn Temp's in the summer high 90s. To Neg - 40 blow Zero, in the winter. I have Zero problems with my Catch Can last winter. In my 5.7 Hemi 2021 Ram 1500 4x4, Limited Longhorn. I change my oil every 3,000 miles. With full synthetic oil and SRT oil filter. The same with my wife's old. 2010 Challenger R/T Classic with the 5.7 Hemi. The Ram after 3,000 miles will only have 1/8th to a 1/4 of oil in the catch can. The Challenger will be 1/2 - 3/4 full. I only check mine every 1,500 miles or so.
IMO now is when you do need it the most. The whole idea is to stop the muck going back through the engine. Can't you get a bigger can or double up on it ?
I had a 1992 GMC 1/2 ton for fourteen years and the only reason I let it go was the exhaust manifolds rotted off. Cost more than the truck was worth to fix. Oh and no catch can!
Almost done with my Don’s Life 2021 6.2l AT4 clone! It’s Satin Steel not white. S&B air intake, 1.5” spacers on my stock 20” wheels, and yesterday I did the Borla S-Type exhaust! Thanks for the ideas and the how to info! Those stock chrome muffler tips were not fun! The first one didn’t go well the second one I realized the inside bolt comes out and you fold it down to get the other two. My guess is they assemble it with the tabs down on the bumper cover then fold it up and put the third bolt in during the assembly at the production plant.
I have a JLT (now J&L) can on my 2020, and it doesn't say anything about needing to check it every day. It does say people in cold climates will need to check more often... Every day sounds a bit insane to me. IDK how that can is compared to mine, but, I'm pretty positive you're not going to fill the can in a week - no matter what the climate. I'd rather keep it on VS having the valves get all gunked up due to the DI. Just some food for thought.
@@Donslife but if the moisture goes to the bottom and mixes with the oil (big if, because I'm not sure exactly how it would work), why would that be an issue? It wouldn't be recirculating through at that point. And wouldn't you, in theory, have a moisture issue anyway with whatever is flowing through the stock PCV hose? Just trying to come up with ideas here 😉
With that engine saver separator device and if I buy the octane increase and new gas saver gizmo, the engine will last forever and it will get 200 miles to a gallon of gas. Alas, I don't have the time or money so I'll just have to keep changing the oil and filter every 3,000 miles and get a new vehicle after 250,000 miles and the rust is making flow through ventilation.
You know, back in the 50's and 60's car manufacturers just used down draft tubes... Thats all you need. Equalize the pressure between the bottom end of your motor, and atmosphere. PCV and catch cans draw a vacuum .. thats why you're sucking up so much oil.
My question is what brand of oil are you using it looks like it breaks down faster. I use shafers oil full synthetic with Molly 0-20 with a Napa gold filter it doesn’t even look broke down at 7k miles
Right now I am receiving the dealership provided oil changes. AC Delco full synthetic was used. Remember what you saw in the catch can is all of the stuff that accumulated with the blow by gasses. So it will be frothy and often discolored.
@@Donslife when I got my first free oil change I purchased my own oil and filter and they said they were fine with that and it would not void the warranty we run shafers full synthetic oil in everything from cars to trucks, semis and farm/heavy equipment we also run shafers fuel additives as well and there grease
Great oil you’re using. I’ve always used Amsoil Z-Rod full synthetic high zinc oil in all my cars from old SBC to newer overhead cam engines and the cams all look like new. Had my timing belt replaced on my 02 Camry and the valve cover gaskets replaced and the mechanic couldn’t believe how clean and new the cams looked with 104k miles so he grabbed his cell and took some photos to show me and asked me what oil I used. Runs like a sewing machine and is super quiet. EPA lies and tells us we can’t use high zinc oil in our newer cars with Cats and emission systems or it will ruin the Cats and emission systems which I did not believe. So before I switched to the Z-Rod high zinc oil I talked to oil expert Lake Speed Jr. from Joe Gibbs driven oil and he said if your engine does not burn a lot of oil there is not way the high zinc and phosphorus oils ruin the Cats and emissions system. He suggested the Driven high zinc full synthetic Hot Rod oil which I ordered from Jegs but they had a big delay so I just went to our Napa store and grabbed the Amsoil z-rod 10/30 and couldn’t be happier. This Camry uses hardly any oil between oil changes which I do about every 5k-8k miles or once a year. I use Baldwin filters or the Napa or Wix . My friend recently gave me his mint condition 02 Suburban 1500 LT with 165k on it that he always used Mobil 1 full synthetic which he changed every 5000 miles and runs excellent so I’m going to put a catch can on it and it loves that Z-Rod oil. Can’t even tell it’s running at an idle it’s so smooth and quiet. I bet your Schaffer oil is pretty high in Zinc also. Only makes sense to use oil that protects the cams, bearings, crankshafts better.😊
I live on long island new York and I’m am thinking about putting one on my AT4. But if I have to drain it almost every day I am thinking is a good idea or should I just leave it off.what are your thoughts about it
I don’t think you’ll have the condensation concerns I do out here in Saskatchewan. I did follow up video to this where I installed a drain line. It allows me to drain from outside the vehicle, which I do once every couple weeks or so now.
I recognized your truck earlier in spiffy. Looks cool. I had the blacked out AT4X with red accents with borla exhaust. I’m thinking about getting the red brembo brake calipers in keeping with modest red accents. Stay cool!
Respectfully, in -40 F or -40 C (it can get to -50) here is is recommended to clear the catch can of moisture frequently, even daily depending on the amount of time the engine was used. Mild freezing temps I wouldn’t be as concerned.
I am running the recommended 5w30 full synthetic. The catch can is a collection of vapours and moisture from the blow by gasses. When this ‘stuff’ gets cold, even in -10°C it thickens. The engine oil is not as thick but its viscosity is affected as it gets colder too.
@@Donslife the 2020 GMC Sierra owner’s manual states “In an area of extreme cold, where the temperature falls below -29 C, use SAE 0W-30.” See for yourself on page 341. I’m not certain yours is a 2020 model year but I’m suggesting you take a look and then change the oil next week.
It’s the vapors traveling back to the intake to be burnt off. The catch can holds onto it for disposal which can help keep the top end from being gummed up
Just used my last free oil change with the dealership. Full synthetic but I am sure it’s an ACDelco. I know there are better ones with more strategically places bypasses.
Don’t take my word for it. Google ‘benefits of a catch can’ and you’ll find lots of reasons why they can be beneficial but nobody ‘needs’ one. Your vehicle will run fine without it too. I like having one to keep the intake chamber as clean as possible.
