Thank you for this video. A friend asked me about automation and I found out of 3 other vids I watched, yours is very beginner friendly, and talking about manual automation part was great!
You will probably need to go ahead and add a clip into a clip slot on the audio track. You could either record one in or simply drag and drop an audio file from your browser onto a clip slot. :)
I didn't see what I was looking for here, but found out by being here and trying some things...I had a short loop that runs for a long time, and I wanted to automate that short loop over the course of that long time, not just the short loop length as most of this video shows. To automate volume of the loop over the course of a song, not just the loop segment, arrangement not session view was the key.
Yeah automation is much better in Arrangement view for a lot of reasons. That said, you can also unlink the automation from the clip in Session view if you want a really long automation, but inputting the automation into Arrangement and playing the clip from Session view is probably the best way to go about what you were trying to do! Thanks for watching. :)
at 19:52 in the Envelope tab I don't have Automation and Modulation buttons. All the rest is the same. In Ableton's docs they have example with v10 so I thought they removed it for 11 or something. But I see you have it here. Any ideas? I tried on a audio and midi clips in session and arrangement views. Cant see these.. Super informative video really closed some corners about intermediate to advance automation stuff Thank you
The automation and modulation buttons only show up in clips in Session View. Any clip parameters (gain, transpose, etc.) and MIDI parameters (pitch bend, mod wheel, CCs) can only have modulation so you won't see the automation option for those. Try switching to a parameter that can be both automated and modulated, like a filter or something, and make sure the clip you have selected is in Session View. :)
Is there a way to record clip pitch automation? I mean record that by turning knob on my midi controller, not painting that envelope. Thanks for the info! :)
Not in a simple way unfortunately. Because the pitch parameter can't be automated, it can only be modulated (see my video on modulation!). That said, you can MIDI map it, so you could potentially do some weird MIDI re-routing and mapping to record the movement of the MIDI CC in as automation on another channel that then controls the pitch parameter, but that could get a little convoluted. If you want to record in pitch automation, my recommendation would be do use some kind of pitch-shifter plugin and record the automation of that. :)
You covered a heck of lot regarding automation and thank you for sharing your knowledge. I wonder though if you could elaborate on adding automation with a midi controller? I'm really stuck. When I try and add automation using my 8 channel device, and then move the sliders further in the track, all the settings have changed too meaning I lose all that has gone before.
Adding automation with a MIDI controller should be exactly the same process as recording automation, you just have to make sure the controls are all mapped first. As long as you start recording from a point where you don't mind overwriting the current automation, then you shouldn't have an issue and Live won't overwrite the automation that came before that point in the timeline. I don't know why you've be losing all of the automation from beforehand, that shouldn't be happening. Is there any more information you can give so I can help out? :)
@@matttinklermusic I really appreciate you taking the time to offer some help. I will try and be as concise as I can. I have 45 tracks all containing one complete song. They are all being fed into a new track. The midi controller is housing 8 external plugins on a return track mapped to each of the 8 sliders. I think I might have just had an epiphany. I will get back to you after I try again
@@matttinklermusic I think I was overcomplicating things. I was trying to run before I could walk so to speak. I have got it working brilliantly.. just as you showed me up there. Thank you again you've been really helpful.. Instead of putting the fx to a send channel. I put it on the channel I use as a pre master (Route all tracks to it) Low and behold.. it works.. Thanks again
My problem is when I assign a MIDI mapping from an external MIDI controller button or slider to a parameter inside Ableton. I'm losing my automation lane on each loop of a clip in Session view. As soon as I delete the MIDI mapping, I can reinstate the automation by clicking the Re-Enable Automation in that given parameter. Any preference setting would solve this behaviour?
I would look into using modulation rather than automation, as manually moving any control that is automated will disable the automation. If you use modulation, this won't happen. I have a video on modulation that I recommend checking out! :)
Just got Ableton, how do you record mixer channels volumes into arrangement view? I'm jamming in session view and want to record all the automation but all it is doing in arrangement mode is recording the audio clips and repeating them but no fader or mute actions that I am doing, the arrangement window is greyed out?? All I've read and watched is 'arm the little button, press record and tweak away' but it just isn't happening?? How do you record fader actions? Please help.
Heya! It sounds like you need to enable the Session Record button. It's a little outlined circle button found to the right of the main transport controls. The bigger, solid circle is for Arrangement View recording. :)
@@matttinklermusic I just worked it out 5 mins ago! lol. Think I've also solved the 'tempo not matching project' in session mode. I've just came from using Reason for 15 years and this is all spanish to me. Thanks.
Is there a way to show automations from inside an audio clip for example when I automate the Mixer Gain inside the audio clip when in arrangement view like sometimes editing automation inside the clip is just more convenient other than the fact that it wont show in automation lanes which is what Im hoping you can help answer... I cannot find a way to do this without literally copy pasting and then adjusting because it usually doesn't copy past the exact values. Please help this would make my workflow so much better!
Great question! Automation can only be done in clips in Session view and not in Arrangement view. In Arrangement view, you can instead add 'modulation' to clips, which allows you to adjust a parameter relative to its absolute value rather than taking it over like automation does. You might find that this suits your needs! I've got a whole video about Modulation I'd you're interested in watching it. :)
So much information, and so clearly delivered, thank you!
