I studied with Nic on Saint-Laurent college, in Montreal total class act. Also majored in orchestral composition, not less - which shows a lot when you think about it! He's basically used his traditional orchestral composition skills and transposed them to Ableton... genius move indeed. A really awesome and unique musician :)
This is incredible. I realized I know absolutely nothing compared to these guys! I always max out at 8-10 omnisphere instances, but now I know how to use more. Thanks for this amazing walk thru and may I just say your piano talents are some of the best I've ever seen. New fan right here!
Haha sounded kinda rude but true. Electro jazz sounds completely different. He's a classically trained musician first but he made his own sound. He indeed has enough skills to perform live. 😂
He repeatedly emphasized tricks on how to maximize CPU usage and he was using a regular Macbook, which can use maximum 16gb no more... *L-I-S-T-E-N* when a master speak.
Really interesting video. Would like to see more along the same lines, how artists and bands use modern tech in their live performances. Thanks for this.
you cannot start a video with a song like that oh my god.. I'm so... I can't even explain I wanna get my band right so bad oh my lord, y'all are wonderful man
Literally, no lol. If you aren't following the basic concepts you need to look up Ableton videos on automating instrument racks using a chain selector.
That doesn't make you inferior, but the "basics" of what he's doing would require a series of videos. I didn't mean offense I was just saying if you're not following start with instrument rack videos and automation videos in ableton
@@lucaskamal8094 he is right though.. There is no way to put all of the basics that were combined in this set into a single video and have it keep your attention for the dozens of hours required to explain all the techniques and nuance required. I got two questions: first, how do you deal with latency between computers and click tracks for each player? And second, when are you gonna come out with omnisphere presets for the producers out here?
Would have been really nice to see what kind of interface the are using and how the audio is being sent to front of house. Is each computer going out in stereo? Are the drum triggers coming through the main computer?
@@Mathcartney Well no, because AU is just the Mac format for plug-ins, as opposed to VST's for Windows PC's. But yes, because you can see the Apollo Twin he's using at 13:05
In the video, you can see a few interfaces, I believe it's the apollo twin for the main setup, the bassist had a focusrite, and I think i saw a focusrite for the secondary key
I don't know if anybody will be able to answer me, but why did he say it's better to use an Instrument Rack to put everything to one core? He mentions that it's good to make use of your whole processing power but isn't it better then to use all the cores?
this is gold. one question though, how did you route vst instruments through that external instrument? It seems to only want to work with hardware synths for me.
I’m not sure what VST you are trying to use it with so I’ll use Omnisphere as an example. Load your external instrument onto whatever channel you need it. In the EI select the VST, and select the midi it is sending to the VST (channel 1-16), you also have to select where the external instrument plugin will receive audio from. Omnisphere actually has a “multi” mode, which is basically a mixer inside of Omnisphere blending allowing you to blend and mix it’s layers within itself. Each of these can receive midi on a channels A-H (1-8). And they can send audio out (in stereo) through 1-16 different outputs. However, you cannot use audio output 1/2 because that will send the audio out of the VST channel instead of back into the external instrument (because Omnisphere designates 1/2 that way). So simply send midi channel 1 to Omnisphere to trigger the sound in receiving that channel, and receive audio back on 3/4.
Late to the party - I also have the same issue as @sunbloom. On the External Instrument device, the "MIDI to" dropdown doesn't show any other Ableton tracks, only hardware interfaces. Anyone manage to solve it?
Timing of this video 👌. I was just wondering what daw was used for the recording and live performances. Saw you in sf back in April. 🙏 Audio interface is Apollo Twin.
Hey, I came across your comment. I believe the way to do it is by creating a return track, sending the click track sounds to it, and assigning the output of it to only your monitors. You should be able to do that assignment if you route the monitors properly into your audio interface. Best of luck!

Amazing stuff. Exactly what I wanted to see.
I got two questions: first, how do you deal with latency between computers and click tracks for each player? And second, when are you gonna come out with omnisphere presets for the producers out here?
The latency is almost zero if you're using a half decent audio interface
Keyboard players can play with a band. That wouldn't work with delay unless the delay is tiny.
You can optimize your setup, Ableton has a good video on doing that
