"... thou shalt lend unto many nations, and thou shalt not borrow...And the LORD shall make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath;...hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God...Deut.28:12,13
@032125: I don't quite get how being "simultaneously repulsed by the idea that other people want things that they dislike, and emotionally invested in the idea that they have superior judgement" is a dichotomy. The two things seem to be mutually reinforcing. Mind to clarify?
What I meant was the context was a chapter entitled "Instructions on Worship" (or some variant thereof). So it is possible that Paul is correct that *during worship and in church dealings* that women and men have certain roles, as he wrote Timothy. Or not. I can't really argue to this specific passage and its meaning. I only wanted to note that it only applies to the procedure for worship and church leadership, and not all of life.
The context is the internal workings of the church, in an age where having the women teach was frowned upon by even most women. Whether that is the way the church should be run or not is obviously debatable, but that context is important. Without it, it would be similar to leaving off the "in self-defense" part of "it is acceptable to kill someone in self-defense".
@newperve Yes people buy into superficiality/branding all the time. People want a job so they can survive while others are at the stage where they want to maintain thriving, however the middleman is being squeezed out. When J. Adams referred to the invisible hand his intention is that local companies would serve their local community, but this didn't take into consideration the mobility of corporations to go else where overseas to pursue higher ROI through exploitation. Its all about $ in the end
@charronfamilyconnect Why is labor cheaper overseas? If corporations don't want to pay people a lot why don't they just offer rubbish wages in the west? Because the labor of westerners is very productive and therefore if one corporation doesn't buy it at a high price others will. So in other words those losing the jobs have good options and those gaining them do not. The bottom line is usually that the bosses do care about quality because people will pay for it. How can you not know this?
@charronfamilyconnect "Run in a command style fashion" what does that mean? Are the workers kidnapped and made to work there? No, they are freely trading their labor, the management is freely trading the products of that labor. That you don't like it doesn't make it unfair. But you don't care about what is fair, you would stomp on third world workers best option for your own satisfaction. It has nothing to do with might, or "exploitation", you just don't like being undercut.
@032125 Specialization is one of those terms that economists were indoctrinated into regurgitating in schools. Its an excuse for multi nationals to move their operations overseas to search out cheaper avenues of production.I guess it helps the locals there to at least get paid enough for a bag of rice each month. Its certaintly better than starving. I guess that is considered progress. I repeat, austrian economics may work for a close knit local community with common goals, but not on global scale
@AkivaII Sorry I'm not sure if I follow you. I agree with what you said about the deplorable conditions that exist in parts of the world, all in the name of the bottom dollar, and maximization of the ROI at the expense of the environment, and others desperation by corporatization. Its a doggy dog world. All for one. Self presevation, elimination of the weak. Thank you Darwin you elitist, born into wealth and richness for explaining the acceptable fact that the meek should parish & strong survive.
@charronfamilyconnect The state is institutionalized depredation. There'd be monopoly "money" without these naughty multi nationals anyway. Money represents everything that can be bought for money, so "money corrupts" is "prospect of getting more xxx corrupts"... In a free society, companies committing armed robbery likely wouldn't survive for long. Under the protection of the state, on the other hand, they do. What's your solution?
@032125 I have studied Austrian economics. I think it could work as a theory within the confines of a small close knit community, but on a national/ bigger scale level its function breaks down, cause mutual benefits is no longer beneficiary. This so called free trade with mexico and china is nothing about free trade, its about a command economy controlling the divisions of labour in a corporate setting for purposes of exploiting, and maximization of profits. How is this a mutual benefit?
@charronfamilyconnect Ok, HOW does the mutual benefits break down? Either someone is exchanging consensually or they are not. Either this results in mutual benefit or it doesn't. If it doesn't why are people doing things that don't benefit them?
@032125 We dont require as many menial labour tasks as in the past through machination, and robotics. Most of the things you talk about can be done through automation. We could produce alot more in shorter period of time. We don't require to work dusk to dawn. I think its fucking nuts to export Useless labour jobs overseas, and then transport it all back overseas on huge freights that spit out all kinds of toxicity into the environment/fossil fuels. Its nuts. Why can't we produce our own shit?
@032125 I agree with your assessment about crony capitalism. I don't think there is any way to prevent this formation. You need some form of social organization, whether for protection or law enforcement. The problem is that those with money and influence will always be able to influence and bribe those suppose to be acting in our best interest. Its human nature to exploit the weak. I bet you would buy non GMO food if it was affordable. The only reason you buy GMO is the bottom line which is $.
@032125 The larger the pool the greater the allowance for specialization? I heard that before. Are you talking about dividing up labour across seas where labour is cheap and people are more desperate? Where corporate multi nationals, who have the money and resources, and move the shop overseas in search of maximizing ROI. Isn't the bottom line just the bottom dollar, and who really cares about quality?I mean we have lots of gmo food that is real cheap compared to locally wholesome grown produce
@Arjozof You say that like as if government is some kind of separate species? Government is suppose to be a collective group that is put in power by society for the purposes of ensuring peoples rights, and freedoms arent infringed upon. The problem is that power corrupts whether its a private entity or public entity it really doesnt matter. Your right about big powerful corporations taken advantage of all they can. They have become parasitic entities. The evolution of capitalism is corportocracy.
@newperve You seriously believe average people know how to distinguish between quality and crap quality? I tend to believe people believe what the perceive to have value through corporate branding.I tend to believe quality across the board has taken a hit, cause nothing last as long as it use to.I Look at longevity & price per use. Case in point:You think Nike makes a better quality durable shoe than 30 years ago. Why has Nike shoes gotten more expenseive when they are made cheaply in china?
By all means, enlighten me. Forget what the actual context is just give me ANY conceivable context you can imagine where that passage makes sense. Oh and one rule, nothing stupid like "a person is being held hostage and the assailant hands the victim a note and instructs the victim to read it out loud".
@charronfamilyconnect So basically you think everyone but you shouldn't be trusted to buy things. Who is "J. Adams"? Mobility of corporations doesn't change anything. The reason the ROI is better is because less useful resources are being used to produce the goods of equivalent quality, or the same amount of resource is used to make better. Your contempt for the hoi polloi doens't justify using force against the people that sell to them.
@newperve I couldnt care less about my wages being undercut. I am semi retired, and am financially secure working part time only so I feel more useful to society. I use to hire a crew of guys that I treated like family, and paid them well enough to have decent lives, and I also profit shared with them when they did more than was expected. That created loyalty, honestly, and good will. That is how I built up my business. I respected everyone, and they appreciated me as much as I appreciate them.
@newperve Free Trade? You think a factory being run in command style fashion in a 3rd world country run by a rich billionaire multi national corp. is engaging in free trade or is it called outsourcing? Free trade is a loose term. Well at least you didn't say fair trade. Free trade is not about anything fair. Its about who has the might and where with all to gobble up other little companies, and exploit desperate people in performing menial tasks like robots.
ok so i read the chapter, i see that timothy is not claiming that these are the words of god but neither is he claiming that this is purely how he feels things should be done. "This is good, and pleases God our Savior" he is making objective claims. So do you believe timothy is correct when he says that these are the qualities god desires in his female followers? If not than do you believe that sometimes apostles are wrong but everything that is a quotation from god is correct?
@charronfamilyconnect I find it hard to believe that someone who doesn't understand the basics of economics, but is still commenting on it well after that's been made clear ever ran a sucessful business. Seriously you don't understand that outsourcing can be a form of free trade but you ran a business? If you don't care about wages being undercut, why do you object to offshoring? Do you just hate brown people? You just want to take away the best option from someone just because you can?
@charronfamilyconnect No the core principle of capitalism is free trade. Whether you choose to find the maximum ROI "at all costs" is up to you. The whole "capitalism = survival of the fittest" crap was debunked by the fact that the unfit survive really well in capitalism. It is where capitalism is not prevalent that you find things like children dying because they couldn't fight off waterbourne diseases. Try observing the world some time instead of simply regurgitating propaganda.
@032125 Look up roboeconomics and renewable energy resource based economies, and get back to me on that. Try researching beyond this cultic Austrian economics study group, the world of possibilites may open up to you. The bottom line is Energy exploitation is rampant, the control and misuse of the power to control is a perpetual problem. Capitalism leads to survival of the fittest.. Too bad exploitation of resources for maximum ROI is the goal of pure capitalism, and not resource management.
@Slampropp That sure is idealogical, too bad in real practice things dont work out that way due to man's exploitative nature of the meek. His constant lust for more and more and more material things, status, and power at the detriment of all. This invisible hand of the market crap is like believing god will ensure evertying thing inthe doggy dog world will eventually work out for the better. Reality and ideals are two separate concepts unfortunately.
Maybe you dont know anything about theology and spirituality, like most atheists, so you might not know how ego is a very big topic in it, and yes we have it but that doesnt mean we cant handle it differently than we do sometimes and that there are levels to it. And the reason we got it might be different from what you think. Humans are the only beings on this planet with higher consciousness, creational thinking and need for spirituality, and there is no good reason for that evolutionary speaking. Our search for meaning and sense, and the yearning for something deeper that we feel is there (except some really shallow/blocked people) comes from the fact that we have a soul that is on a journey and it can be so frustrating to us...unlike animals who only run on instincts and never question or seek anything. Atheism tells you, that you are a soulless pile of cells, whos life has no meaning value or purpose and therefore its pointless, so why even continue it? If neither pain and suffering or love and joy, and the human journey in general, has any significance, then why even continue humanity or have empathy for anyone? Atheism is dark, empty and cold and doesnt nourish the soul when things get gloomy...and it also goes against so many unexpalined things. Its not about beliefs when it comes to God onle anyway...its about experiences that can be quite big, transforming, intense and healing. But we cant slap them on a desk and say "look at it, touch it, analyse it"...spiritual developement is a personal thing. Maybe sacrificing us out of love for others (even strangers) is the lack of rational ego too...real, pure love is spiritual and the most powerful thing in existence. Humans arent rational at all in general and pure rationality leads to being cruel or like a machine and that causes suffering too.

No.
Very elaborated analysis.

my favorite bible passage "I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man. She must be quiet." (1 Timothy 2:12)
*based* 🙋
Exactly.

hmmm...Judaism : Capitalism :: Oil : Water
not really
or you know we can punish those who commit crimes on an individual basis and treat everyone else as equals.
This sentence is oxymoronic. How can you punish individuals while treating everyone equally?
Interestomg topic.
