My MacLennan grandmother’s grandfather was given land in Nova Scotia after he was injured in Scotland in the Queen’s Black Watch. He was also given the option of a pension but chose the land still called MacLennan’s Mt to this day. The original homestead was dismantled and move to the nearby town of Stellarton. My grandfather’s family, the Murrays, also came to Nova Scotia at the same time (1801) and also settled in Pictou County Nova Scotia, both sides of the family from the Grampian Mts in the Highlands. I am so very proud of my heritage!

I'm an enrollerd Eastern band cherokee (cherokee NC USA), but my mother's non native are the Ritchie( Anna Christine Ritchie) who's family came to america in the late 1700 hundreds. of the old clan chatam, ( touch not a cat, bot a glove)Which became know as macintosh, and their spouses are the Campbell and Keith (James Alexander Ritchie born 1757 stewarton Ayrshire scotland , (his great grandfather was james Richie born 1650 glasgow, Lanark Scotland) he (James Alexander Ritchie) died in america in 1800s.
So They are also my people too (how we as native American see it as honoring our elders also, it is a native thing) so I am glad to watch your show on this subject.
My people( The cherokee) still maintain our clans... So we could understand ( way back then) when they said they were of a "clan".. but very different from ours.
As a side bar: I see my family as a "clan chatam", not a mackintosh... Still respect them for who my ancestors say they are. "Clan Chatam".
So mackintosh be damed! They are , "Chatam" to them the first. "Don't touch a wild cat without a glove" . I have more to research because I have been told they came here because of the jacobite rebellion... But why they came here doesn't matter, just that they did and they became married to who they did and then... Their off spring became married to my mother and father to create me...
Thier daughter, the keeper of my family...

My grandmother was Cherokee and I am also named after the Strachan Clan.
I have no idea where to start researching my Cherokee roots as she died in 1966. And my grandfather didn't speak of her much before he passed. It's interesting to find a other Cherokee-Scot connection. I wonder how common this was.

So i looked up the name alexander macbeth sutherland of clyne from hbc seven oaks massacre era. Then i realized he must of changed the middle name from mckay to macbeth. From NC---my grandmother spoke Scots-Gaelic. She was born in 1888---from Western NC.
I only learned this a few years before she passed at 104, when a woman in her apartment (from Scotland) was speaking what I thought was a "strange" language.
She never taught her son (my dad) or me!! It was explained there was still some secrecy or shame associated with using the Gaelic. 😞
Part of my family is also Scots from Eaatern NC--- as might be guessed from the name I use for posting. Amazing to me how the Scots culture is still present/underlying US history--no matter if some history was never known or taught.

Bloodline, however impressive, is not as decisive as spirit:
People you love to learn about and commit your life energies to: that is your clan...that is your people..
Sometimes we are surprised by how the THUNDERBOLT hits.
History can be, and often is, changed by one person's free decision, one person's commitment.

Yes, one would hope that to be the case, but in all our family's history in Scotland (from Somerled through the Stewarts and the majority of the clans named here) there was constant feuding, countless skirmishes, and frequent warring for many, many centuries, often using daughters as marriage fodder to patch up grievances and to build or renew alliances. All led by the aristocrats. Plus ca change, plus ca la meme chose.

Haven't seen the whole thing yet so I'm commenting early, but I wonder if my clan will be mentioned. Small clan from Galloway/Dumphries. We are said to be descended from Somerled's youngest son. One of the more notorious members of my clan was known as Cut or Cutler MacCulloch. Our clan pretty much fizzled out and disappeared at the end of the 1600s when our last true clan chief was executed in 1697. Control of the clan went elsewhere after that and just kind of disappeared. Our last recognize Clan Chief 's family moved here to the US and all the lands we held and our ancestral estate ended up in the hands of others. Cardenas castle is now in ruins.

De Bruc was Norman French as well as most of the aristocracy of Scotland as well, Finding this out made me look at Scottish history in a different way. The Auld alliance between Scotland and France made more sense when you consider that most of Scotland's leadership was Norman French and didn't speak the native language

The current clan system is medieval - plenty of Norsemen involved (e.g. MacDonald) - yet the connection between _Brittons_ and _Bretons_ and the *Celtic clan system e.g. in Ireland* is older than William the Conqueror.
A comparison with Wales would be interesting as it maintained it's ways from Saxon and Viking (Danish) influence until the arrival of the 'Normans'.

I too live in the US but was born in PEI and also lived in Pictou Co., Nova Scotia where my MacLennan and Murray families arrived in 1801 from the Grampian Mts in the Highlands. MacLennan’s Mt Nova Scotia was given to my great grandfather’s father after being injured in the Queen’s Black Watch and remains there to this day…often confused with MacLellans Brook. The land is owned now by Scott Paper, but they sold back the original homestead to a cousin of mine who lives in the US. My grandmother took me back there in the 80s and the foundation remains. The home was dismantled by my grandmother’s father and moved to a nearby town. Played, visited and lived in that house. The MacLeods and MacKays (also cousins) lived in the houses on either side! Small world. The New Glascow Library in Nova Scotia has a group of genealogists who have tons of info on the family and I have portraits etc. There is a small church in Scotland that allowed the clans to sleep in their graveyard during the Clearances and a little girl etched her name (MacLennan) into the church glass window. All my relatives have gone back to visit Scotland, but I too have not made it yet!

On my fathers side: I have my great, great grandmother’s passport. She was born on the island of WESTRAY. (SIMPSON / HARCUS) Her daughter was born in Glasgow. (HARCUS / KING). She married an ENGLISHMAN which, personally I find to be sort of peculiar. Anyway, I’m thankful that I was able to get a hold of the passport and some other of her belongings, after my great uncle passed.

Wow! I was interested in this video because my husband has a quarter of Irish blood and a quarter of Scottish and, haha, half Slavic (Czech Republic and Poland) . I am very proud of the history of his family and parents . Irish-Scottish roots go down the father's line. Many clan names are intertwined . McDonald , McNeil , McLaren , McCall , Drummond , Wilson , Clark , Robertson , Young , Bain , Kilgore . Are there any doubts about the Irish or Scottish names Nicole and Mitchell ? In addition, there seems to be great confidence in the relationship with Robert Fulton, the famous engineer-inventor of the first steamboat and submarine. My husband 's great - grandmother was Fulton .

    • @scotoftheanarchic.7903
      @scotoftheanarchic.7903 Рік тому +3

All the Mc names you mentioned are Scottish McDonald, McLaren so there's Mc in Irish also Scottish . Almost all the surnames beginning with Mac like Macdonald, MacLaren are Scottish along the movement of immigration etc they became McLaren, McGregor, McArthur. Yes some Irish and Scottish surnames became intertwined also regarding the Mc so ye you're right. One thing that distinguishes the Scottish surname is son at the end like Wilson, Robertson, Hutchinson, Morrison, Anderson, Henderson, Ferguson,, Dickson, Paterson, Simpson, Stevenson, swanson, Matheson ... You get the jist lol. Mitchell is more of a Scottish and English surname and Nicol is also Scottish and English with Nicoll, Nichol an Nicholl unless its MacNicol then you know its purely Scottish lol. Hope that helps a wee bit ☺️. Oh and Fulton is Scottish outright...

around and get that story. I just search the names and dates that came up from my research and sometimes wound get big stories about the ancestors I found going back in Scotland, Ireland and England. I was blown away by the linage uncovered of Ferguson, Ross, Gordon, Campbells, Wallace. It seems, though there may be spurious connection our bloodline went to Kings of England, Scotland and France. Elenor of Aquitaine and all the Kings descended then way back to royals into 1200.
