I honestly don't find this result that surprising. If you look at it, AEB-L and 12c27 are very similar in terms of makeup. I think this is a steel that can give highly variable results, but when done right, it is such a good balance of edge holding, toughness, and rust resistance. I also wanted to say that I have always enjoyed your content, but as of late, your videos are absolutely stellar. The viewer gets the usual tabletop review, but it is mixed with humor and actual in-use footage. Cheers
I have four cricket knives that are 12c27…. None of them have seen any outdoors work and anything aside from slicing paper and cardboard so far. I may be out on some longer hiking trips soon though and it’s got me a bit nervous. I’m not 100% on how they are gonna hold up and I don’t wanna bring 15 different knives cause all mine have cheaper steels like this. I’m thinking I may just bite the bullet and get a Cold Steel with S35VN. But, I’d be very upset if I lost or damaged it.
I really like 12C27. Granted, the only experience I have with it is in a Mora Companion, but it takes an unbelievable edge, holds it well, and is easy to sharpen. It’s good in my book!
Better than I've expected. It'd be interesting to see, how 12c27 does in production knives, I'd guess it'd still beat it's main competitors AUS8 and 8Cr13MoV. I'd also like to see, how 14c28n does in a custom...
Thank you for your tests which help show how good heat treatment makes such a huge difference. It's can be such a tricky marketplace with manufacturers doing poor or inconsistent heat treatment, or not even supplying the labeled steel, that makes me happy 3rd party reviewers like yourself are out doing empirical tests. Ideally there would be testing certificates supplied with each enthusiast knife sold to show that the knife meets certain criteria in toughness, hardness, corrosion resistance, edge retention, etc. the same way precision instruments come with calibration papers. We're all trying to get the most bang for the buck and don't have much more than marketing spec sheets and forum anecdotes to go by. Like in one of the comments in a recent video, someone noted the introduction of the Kershaw Dividend in M390 which is available for $70 USD (which I ended up buying), but in the back of my head I worry about its heat treatment since ZT/Kershaw seem to have a somewhat spotty record. Maybe it's not as good a value as it seems and there's some superstar maker out there getting better performance at a similar price with a "lower end" steel.
I knew 12c27 would do well from a custom maker.... I saw you test a production blade and I forget the outcome but it wasn't as good as this....this is as good as 1095 but without the rust worries...?it is easy to sharpen as well!
This is very late but 1 have 2 opinels one 12c27 and one xc95(the euro equivalent of 1095,)and the sandvik is unreasonably easy to sharpen much easier than the carbon, and it also takes a finer edge at lower grits the retention is obviously less but is very respectable, probably like 1084 or lower rc 1095, perfectly acceptable for a fixed blade or folder for average use.
@@dante_f4563 since I wrote that comment 2 years ago I started using 14c28n....very happy with it...great all-rounder type steel and a step up from 12c27 with better edge retention and bit more rust resistant!
Good vid - we’ve come to expect that of you though! Ever test a Damascus steel? In particular I’d be curious how some Zoe Crist would hold up. Pricey though but perhaps a loaner from someone (not me...)
Can you or had you ever tested any SanRenMu 12c27 steel knives? Especially the SanRenMu Land series like Sanrenmu LAND 910 or Sanrenmu LAND 9103. They appear to layman like me significantly better compared to typical Chinese 8Cr14Mov, AUS-8 or 440c. I am curious how you rate their 12c27 steel. Thanks!
A proper edge-retention comparison would be with multiple knives that have the exact same grind, geometry, size, cutting technique, etc., but with different steels
Interesting. I was looking at camp knives and I see a lot of good reviews about this bushcraft knife with the same steel: JEO-TEC Nº18 Bushcraft Survival Hunting Camping Knife, 9" Overall, Stainless Steel Sandvik 12c27
I would be interested to learn how M390 steel from LionSteel would hold up against this Greystone knife. I seem to be forever looking for “THE” knife…you know what I mean….the one that just seems to be “the one” so I can get rid of all my Esee, Fallkniven, Bark River to name but a few….
I can make you one in any steel, and any handle material you want. I just can't guarantee a time frame when I will have it done. But if you're serious about ordering one just shoot me a message on my FB page and we can work something out. I plan to do a batch of knives sometime soon in the next few months so might be able to squeeze it in then.

Phil Sinex AEB L is an analog of another Sandvik steel, 13c26.

Probably pretty good steel if Mora is using it!

Cedric you're videos are as important to me as a good knife. And you're free. Amazing.

I would like to see you test a BPS knife made out of 1066 high carbon steel
Always interested in customs( and the process) videos not over yet but I am hopefull. Good lucking blade.
Well done Greystone 🤘
Love your reviews and test vids. Thanks for putting in your time and effort, very informative. All the best.
That’s a bad ass knife!! Thank you for the review pete
I have Bucks Bos HT Sandvik 13C28 blade, I really think it is a superb steel probably under rated
I love this steel.
I like this knife too. It does have a vague resemblance to my MT-5, but bigger.
I have a crkt m16 with 12c27 and I've never had a better steel in my life hair popping with 2 minuets on a lansky sharpener and leather strop
You should keep a spreadsheet of all these findings if you currently don't i'd be curious to see the data.
Great test! Do you have any result with that steel from Real Steel or Sanrenmu?
I wonder what's more important carbon content or hardness? Off topic info, cold steel does their cts-xhp to a 62 rockwell according to Andrew Demko.
12c27 is better then 420 or not
Whats better 440c steel or 12c27?
i am curious if you can test a CDS knife with the mov58 stainless
How about testing higonokami steel next? If you like carbon you should test more non-stainless steels.

I could be VERY happy with this knife in 3V!
Hey, where's the comprehensive list in the description?
+Ken Gray ah i always forget that - I’ll
add it soon
I'd be interested in seeing Mora's 14C28N on their Garberg tested with a proper scandi or scandivex..... Chop Chop 🤓😉

My browning knife in 12c27 is as good as my spyderco vg10.

did much better than the opinel with 12c. but u think you said the opinel has slightly diff 12c.
Is that T-shirt from Connor lol
That is an incredibly beautiful knife. I might need one of these, I hope I can get it in a better steel if I end up being able to order one.
+EDC with Aaron I’ve seen him use some 154cm in some other knives on the site

LT Wright AEB-L please🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
12c27 is sanrenmu or Mora level steel. I just ordered 12c27 sanrenmu slipjoint for 12 bucks :) It's definitely not custom knife level steel.
That is one nice knife
Cool vid
Notbad very good. No junk steel there.i like this .mora knives love it and 1428sanvik hot steel😜
Why are you dressed like that?
