  • In this video, I take a look at a custom flashlight called the Okluma DC1. I’ve owned a DC1 for a couple years now, and they’re built out of Oklahoma by a guy named Jeff. The DC1 is the progenitor of the original flashlight that started the triple-LED craze, the Mac’s Tri-EDC. Mac himself went rogue years ago, and Jeff picked up the demand for the setup. With that said, Jeff has implemented a lot of little changes over the years to distinguish the DC1 from the Tri-EDC.
    Watch the video for a more nuanced understanding of the flashlight's pros and cons. At the end, I cover the current state of the custom flashlight market as well.
    I do have a written review of this flashlight as well, if that’s more your speed.

    Bear in mind that the last segment of the written review that covers secondary market value does not hold as true as it did then. I elucidate upon this - broadly - in the video.

    Sent an email to Okluma with questions about the DC1 and Jeff (the owner) replied with his phone number and said to call him anytime. Answered all of my questions (and then some!). Some of the best customer service I’ve encountered! Great company and great lights!

    Jeff's customer service should be the standard for every company.

    Love my dc0 but man I’ve been trying to get my hands on a dc1 for so long. Even offering a Rosie for trade nobody will let one go 😂

    nice review. I was curious about trying the Okluma and got one after watching your vids are reviews. I can't find any info on runtimes thought? Any idea? Thanks!

    • @Precogvision
      @Precogvision  5 років тому +2

      Thanks! There’s a few factors influencing runtime, and it’s difficult to get an accurate assessment. 1) The capacity of the battery will obviously make a difference. New-gen 18350s have up to 50% more capacity than old ones. 2) The H17f has 24 separate output levels; doing a runtime test for each would be prohibitive. Suffice to say, on the highest level you can expect minutes of runtime, and on the lowest levels you can extend runtime for days.

      Precogvision thanks. Is it bad to leave the light on on high to do a runtime test? I don’t know if it has some temperature protection or if it would hurt something. Makes me nervous 😬

      @@MrSomeofthem No a well designed driver should take temperature into account and prevent itself from danger.

    Tough question, Okluma DC1 vs Haiku

    • @Precogvision
      @Precogvision  4 роки тому +1

      MrFREDANG If it’s for EDC then DC1 all the way. Haiku is more of a collectors piece unless you’re going to upgrade the internals.

    • @MrFREDANG
      @MrFREDANG 4 роки тому

      Precogvision Thanks for the response, the one issue is the DC1 is just so hard to get hold of! Any suggestions?

    • @MrFREDANG
      @MrFREDANG 4 роки тому

      Precogvision also would like to hear your reasons as to why you say the above? Both are grails for me, along with the Boss and I’m struggling to decide!

    • @Precogvision
      @Precogvision  4 роки тому

      @@MrFREDANG Sure thing! Software wise... Haiku lacks output and the 3S driver is hopelessly outdated. It's sufficient, but lacking relative to even the QLITE much less the H17F you can get in a DC1. The other, HIVE driver you can get with the Haiku is very impractical. Haiku also runs off of a 16340 or CR123A. The capacity is considerably smaller than an 18350.
      The BOSS is easily the most advanced of the three, and is also the one that I'd recommend if you could only grab one. But I'd recommend waiting as they're rolling out a new driver which is even more advanced than the current one.
      As for finding a DC1, I recommend checking out the Facebook group Okluma Kin. There's a lot for sale right now, actually!

    • @MrFREDANG
      @MrFREDANG 4 роки тому

      Precogvision Thanks for pointing me in the direction of Okluma Kin, although my wallet will probably not thank you! In some respects the Haiku is attractive to me in that it is simple, by all accounts it throws an amazing looking beam (I am aware that it is by no means the brightest), and has adequate power for most day to day tasks. I have some crazy powerful torches for when I need them but as far as good quality beams go I have none. At the moment I am looking at Haiku, DC1 and DC0 and Boss, I see that the Boss is probably the most practical and probably hardest working so maybe I will have to get a Boss as well as a Haiku?! Do you see much usage for the DC1 in that case? Maybe later on down the line I will need to look at the DC0 as a slimmer EDC light...

    You can adjust that clip in less than a minute with a pair of pliers.

    The most over hyped, least interesting flashlight on the market. Thankfully I was able to sell mine for mad profits.
