Both my three pedal 65 and 67 Mustangs were manual steering. The 67 had REALLY wide low profile 50 series tires. To turn, it had to be moving. You could not steer the tires standing still. As you progress with more power stuff, you might consider an electric fuel pump. It will help eliminate many fuel starvation problems. Keep banging those gears! Not many three pedal guys around anymore.
Yesss. Manual steering is the way to go. Still have to adjust my steering box but I love the simplicity of it. It really isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be
I ordered a Rod & Custom Rack And Pinion/Disc Brake Conversion Kit With Tubular A-Arm System And Coilover Kit for my 1967. Had to ship in to The Netherlands. Should improve the (poor steering box) handling : ) But now I have to start cutting and welding : )
Dropping that P/S pump is a good thing. My car ATE those pumps...after two I just took it out. The only 'proper' manual steering part is a different tie rod center.....which you do not need to change.....plus then you may as well do the whole tie rod as it will need an alignment. I can change the oil filter from the top and that's a plus. See you use the same NAPA fuel filter....I buy them 3 - 4 at a time! Running two right now with the new fuel tank. On the steering check your rag joint too.....once soft it will allow steering to become 'lazy'. Good stuff!
Dave & @fourspeedfilms - how much heavier is the steering leaving the original box in there and just removing the power system? Heavy enough at slow speeds that you'd ultimately want to go do a different ratio box? Thinking of doing the same to my car, but just a little leary of how heavy it's going to feel around parking lots & such
@@dannymcgirr On the first Gen Mustangs until the end of 68 the P/S was almost a add on. In fact a dealer could add it if customer wanted it. For me the car drives fine and I like the response and feedback. Only when stopped does it become tough and then even though I am north of 60 not bad. What you have to consider is if the P/S is integrated into the steering box and linkage. Then it becomes a whole different conversion. If it's a first Gen Mustang you can unbolt the power cylinder from the tie rod center member, leaving all other parts in place, and test it out to see if you like it. If not, just hook it back up......you will not even loose fluid! Good Luck.
Man I love the look of your mustang and the sound of it! Just a badass car! I’m restoring my 66 mustang and your videos keep me inspired to keep at it. Keep the videos coming 🤟🏼
yes to the steering mod. did the same thing on my '70 mach so that I could fit headers around the cleveland and clutch zbar. its a little sweaty driving it, but man do you feel 'engaged'. fun to keep planning and modifying.
You mentioned you're interested in a new/rebuilt steering box. Not sure where you're located, but Chockostang does amazing work. I sent my box to him and got it back rebuilt to specs, cleaned up, and powder coated the original color. Made a HUGE difference and I would say it's worth shipping your stuff out to him regardless of where you're at. He's great to work with, too--I'm sure he'd be happy to trade out your power steering parts (pump, centerlink, etc.) for a manual setup!
Hey Ben- great content. Hang on to that power steering unit ( rebuild it & put it in a bag on a shelf, labeled). Trust me. Oh- my mom drives a '69 GMC long wheel base with no power steering- but it does have headers. She's 89.
Its always something and forever will always be something with these old cars. Glad to see it on the road. Only mustang I like. You should drive it out to Tucson AZ for the duct tape drags October 1st!
The same thing happened to me with my 54 Oldsmobile! We were bringing it back from a friends hot rod shop and it died. Turns out our wire was also shot..as soon as we replaced it it fired right up 💪🏼
I remember back in the day being in your shoes with my own 65 Stang yes I was under it just as much as the time I spent driving it. Gotta Love it. Plus it is nice to see someone your age keeping the hobby going! Thank you, and keep on building!
Not sure about the stang but most old steering boxes have an adjustment bolt/nut/screw to take up any play in the steering wheel. Worth looking into if you haven't already
Years ago I got rid of the P/S on my '68 fastback, pulled the pump and it's hoses and just looped the little hose on the ram back to the other port on the ram, it steers easier than yours looks, still turns with one hand with a 15" wheel. Really dig the channel man, keep it up.
If you upgrade to aftermarket upper control arms with more positive caster you will want the power steering back. It will increase the steering effort.

Man, you got to Sinaloa super quick with that upgrade. Lmao ….good luck on parallel parking, that’s going to suck. You will put it back on when you get a bit older. Lol
Did this in my 71 Torino. I needed the clearance for headers so I found a manual steering adapter. No more power undercoater. I was told to keep the ps steering box because that's what they did in the Shelby's to have quicker steering.
I have been contemplating doing manual steering on my c10 for a while. 1960's power steering just has no feel and is all about the assist. Once I rebuilt my power steering unit and it no longer leaked, it moved a little lower down the priority list, though. Manual brakes are amazing, though. I would never go power assist.
I switched out the wires on my coil in my 67 and was having problems of it cutting off at weird times and it took me a while to figure out the wires were just a little too loose. Don’t feel ashamed.
You will still have a big play in your steering cause the steering control valve has atleast 1/2 of movement. There is a conversion kit for that. You have to change that soon or the ball arm inside the control valve may break off cause it cannot take all that heavy work. Remember that ball arm acts like a switch it is not meant to carry all that weight and effort as a manual steering..
Really like your videos keep up the great work. Love your enthusiasm…reminds me of myself when I was your age.
