      I'm pretty sure you have every single standard type of cymbal in at least 3 sizes. You're just missing those ones with holes, some extra Hi Hat's, and whatever garbage you have in the garage :D

    If you can believe it, on my "metal kit" I have even more cymbals than you do (and yes, I use them all). They're all Paiste Rude or 2002 cymbals and some of them are custom made others from branches they no longer make (like the 2002 metal Rude alloy, a 14" crash/ride). I went back to playing after and watching your videos has actually made me want to practice more. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Thats sick man! I wish I could see it haha. Make a post of it on your UA-cam if you feel so inclined, and I'll take a look at it, I'd love to see it. I've never truly had a bona-fide "Taiste for Paiste" hahaha but they are some of the best on the market especially the rude and 2002 from what I've heard. Vintage 2002 sound amazing. I have had and am currently using on this kit on the left side a 22" Paiste PST5 Rock Ride. I rubbed the logo off, because I want it to match my sabians better and I've been looking at that mismatched logo for nine years, and it had scuffs. It bothers me a lot less now. That things carried me to this day. Its now the secondary ride on my kit but I stand by that bell. Its like a gosh darn anti tank missile haha. It peirces like crazy. Got it for 60$ at the pawn shop in great condition like 9 years ago. Haha. I now use a 21" Sabian Xplosion Ride as a main. Love that thing. Love my sabians. But I love hearing Paiste and they look super great. Its interesting to see where other people like to place their hits haha. What drum brand do you use? These are pearl Exports. I have two Sabian Sr2 chinas on the left(18"/16") AAX 14" stage hats, Sabian AAX Bright Crash 16", sabian 8"/10" splashes, AAX Xplosion Ride 21", AA Medium Thin Crash 16", AA 12" Splash, AAX12" splash on top of Stagg 12"splash for small hats, SR2 China 18" AA China 20" two bells (one from hhx 17" evolution crash, one from Sabian old unknown aero crash). Cheaper setup but I love it.

      @@bretdrummer I have two Pearl Exports from 2005-2008 era one my touring kit with 2 22"x18" kicks, whichever snare I used (I like my Pearl Masterworks 14" x 3.5" with free floating and 6 ply maple on the outside and 4 ply Mahagony on inside. Sounds dark and dry as fuck. I also have a 14" x 8" Pearl Masterworks snare that is 20 plys of maple and is a workhorse as far as volume and a wood snare sound go. I also have a Pearl Reference snare and a Tama Starclassic Bell Brass 14 x 4.0".) That tom setup is 13" and 14" with a 16"x16" floor tom. My main kit in my studio is two 24" x 16" Exports with an 8"x8" tom, 10" x 8", 12"x 10", 13" x 10" and a 14" x 10" rack toms with a 16" x 16" floor tom and an 18" x 16" floor tom. Yes, I use it all. My other kit is a Sonor AQ2 Jazz kit with 16" x 14" kick drum, 10" x 8" rack tom and 14" x 14" floor tom. I went with Istanbul Mehmet cymbals all around with 12" hats. 19" ride, 15", 16" and 18" crashes. Money and time well spent. So much fun to play.

      Thank you so much! I appreciate that a lot.
      Honestly I'm just barely beginning to grasp It myself. I Excell at high speeds and low speeds but mid speeds are my weak spot. Its going to take years. I know that aside from all the techniques and experimenting, once I feel comfortable with a technique, my issue then becomes hesitation. I dread certain parts because they can be hard to perform so I feel intimidated, and want so badly to not screw up, I get nervous abd hesitate and end up screwing it up inevitably. Discipline is what is needed. Once you find a comfortable technique, going through with it and performing it in real time with context to a song or pattern is the next step for me.
      My habitual and practiced techniques;
      For fast I use heel up/habitual heel down pressure ankle technique.
      For super fast/natural coincidental swivel when my legs demand it without choice.
      Low speeds full leg movements.
      Mid speeds i end up swiveling with just my right foot. My left foot can follow without swivel.
      Positioning;
      For super fast my right foot is on the middle/higher footboard, left foot always middle footboard.
      Slow position I kick the bass drum skin directly with my shoe (kidding haha) I can put it wherever I want hahaha.
      Mid speeds, I try to stick my self to the lower part or middle part of the foot board to maximize leverage and minimize energy spent.
      It just comes down to focusing and practicing. I'm no where near where I want to be so thats why I'm givin'er hahaha. I hope this info helps you!

      Do excersizes where you push past times you would usually spend doing double bass patterns. Do them for longer than usual. Then rest. Then go longer. Then rest. Then go longer then rest. Start again. A bit faster. Rinse abd repeat. Vary on your patterns, and be patient with yourself. Don't let people bring you down. Whether they are better or worse than you. Who cares. Just do it for you. Abd remember. Just cause you perform something luckily once, doesnt mean you can just do it now and you don't have to practice it. If you adopt that mentality, you will likely lose what you had before, and everytime you approach it unpractice, you'll hear and feel a shell of what you thought you had. Sonethibg i struggle with. Practice! Keep up on it. Try to be realistic with your goals. You are capable of what feels impossible, but it takes time. Were all different, bodies, minds, mentalities. Take what you can creatively from other and build on it, make it your own. Everyone excells at different levels and speeds. So if you don't see immediate results, try not to feel discouraged. Keep pushing, have patience with yourself, and let loose the monster of drumming terror dwelling deep within your soul! 💯⚔🥁🔨💯 ;)

      I'm learning more and more as time goes on, as Isshin The Sword Saint says in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, "Hesitation is Defeat". Hahaha thats when you lose. 😵🤣

      I'm also trying to work in ankle technique for mid speeds to use less full leg energy, by gaining more control. But this is a big boy technique and I'm really struggling with it. Bahahaha. I got kind of lucky in this video being that its mid speed and I was using ankle technique and purposely trying to play a bit slower then my usual quicker blasts. I comfortabley peak at 235, then have to push just a bit to go higher. I'm probably 200bpm here. 190 maybe.

      Good gear helps too. You're drumming is mostly reliant on the efficiency of the technique you weild, but having gear that functions can be helpful. Doesn't always have to be mega expensive. I played on shitty mismatched pedals forever, and then on double kicks, and have settled for now on these beautiful pearl p930s. They are single chain drive, but are solid and smooth. The long footboard is and offset cam is really helpful too for acoustic punch and attack aside from my triggers. Everyone is using direct drive which is a huge upgrade for blistering fast death metal, and these single chains are probably holding me back to a point in a few ways. But at the end of the day, these pedals are on the cheaper side, and feel very expensive. Things like spring tension and beater distance are subjective. But I like to do what george does. Set my beaters at a 45+ degree angle from my skins, crank my spring tension, and gain control. Use of rebound and beater swing and weight can be very beneficial once you gain control. I like to sit pretty high up too. Ergonomics are a huge factor.

    yo i'm kind of a drums noob. what's that cymbal on the upper-left that you hit twice at like 0:15, with the sort of bowl shape? a local hardcore band i'm a big fan of has one like this that they hammer for a breakdown and it just sounds fuckin sick.

    • @bretdrummer

      Those are China or Chinese cymbals. They are fucking scary sounding i love them. This type of cymbal was designed and used in China for scaring away demons and enemies. At least that what I read haha. We now use them as musical instruments, as metal music demands frightening sounds sometimes haha. They are widely used across many genres, jazz, metal, rock, everyone uses them. I have four on this drumset. Using multiple in fast succession makes me think of hissing attacking snakes 🐍 🐍🐍🐍🐍🐍and I love it.
