  • This is episode #30 for Project Lightning - converting my 1981 DeLorean into an electric vehicle. In this episode I get the car back running and driving after the huge rewire that completed in the last episode.
    Specs:
    150kW (200HP) motor and inverter
    66kWh of LG Chem batteries (Post-recall, brand new)
    Estimated 0-60: 6 seconds
    Estimated range: 200-250 miles
    Estimated weight: 3200lbs (1450kg)

    I do not know how this has never popped into my feed before. It matches every search I've ever done on UA-cam. Any chance you might want to put together a couple thousand for sale? If they were priced reasonably I think that the nostalgia market along with the new generation of EV buyers would snatch them up with pre-orders alone. Maybe contact DMC, and GM for a possible deal to collaborate to help with passing regulations with minimal styling changes. I see DMC is pushing the Alpha 5 concept car, but honestly the "modern" styling isn't what I would like best about an EV DeLorean. The original is an Icon for a reason, and changing that eliminates its Icon status. A redo of the classic, iconic styling with a modernized drive train is what's needed, and you have done that.

    • @BillCarlson
      @BillCarlson  Місяць тому +1

      I would LOVE to see more DeLorean EVs on the road, and while I'm sure there is a market for it, I don't know that the market would bear the price that I'd need to sell it for. A well sorted DeLorean will set you back $50k-$60k these days, and the amount of time to do the conversion would mean the price would have to be like $250k. That said, I just saw a place doing Porsche 964 conversions for $500k, not including the donor, which is kind of crazy!
      Let me be clear - if someone wants to pay me $500k to build a DeLorean EV, my contact info is on my channel page. :D

      I’ve been wondering the same thing. My idea is to rig up a harness to the disconnect plug under the back seat, thru some PV cables and a breaker into the 400v rated PV hybrid inverter. Not exactly a cheap proposition considering the alternative is a sub $1000 dual fuel generator though.

    • @BillCarlson
      @BillCarlson  Місяць тому +3

      LOVE this idea, and it is something that I have put some thought into. We have a massive solar array, and even a small battery would let us run indefinitely if the grid ever went down. Once the DeLorean is really buttoned up, this is likely going to be my next project.

    If GM just did a similar all electric two plus two seater coup, with some fun gull wing doors, it would go so hard.
    Even if it wasn't that powerful. 0-60 in 7/8 seconds.
    It doesn't have to be stupid powerful or fast. It just has to be RWD and fun to drive. Toyota proved that with the 86, and Mazda with the MX5.
    Too many 'large/mid sized electric SUVs' these days. I miss small fun to drive cars.

      Oh, that part was easy! I just took measurements and sent off the axle shaft from the stock DeLorean along with the axle shaft from the Bolt. The Drive Shaft Shop then made a custom axle shaft that bolted right in place, utilizing the spline and bolt patterns from either side. You could do the same thing yourself by cutting the two and welding them together - but a professional shop can do proper heat treating. Cost about $2k!

    Bravo! This is a thing of beauty! However...I'm currently closing a deal on a Delorean and my first thought was converting it to electric so yours, and a few other, channels are of great interest to me. I have a question. I see how you got to your 3200lbs estimate of weight. The problem is you exceed the Delorean's GVWR of 3180 lbs. Not a big problem but you have to add your own weight when you are in it and the weight of any passenger as well. Assuming a grown adult is 150 to 200 lbs that puts the total weight with two passengers at 3500 to 3600 lbs. Do you see this as an issue?

    • @BillCarlson
      @BillCarlson  Місяць тому

      Yes, good catch! The DeLorean only has about 400 pounds difference between curb weight (auto version) and GVWR, so even having two.. erhm.. full sized guys.. sitting in it will go over GVWR, not counting any luggage. :) Since I've replaced the frame with a stainless steel version and upgraded the suspension and braking, I'm not too worried about going over it by a couple hundred pounds. There are also plenty of BTTF Time Machine conversions adding hundreds of pounds and I haven't heard of it being an issue.
