Thank you for this!! I've wanted to read this book for awhile, and while there are spoilers, it has helped me to still want to read this book lol sometimes as a Christian, it is hard to find books that still guard our hearts and minds. Please continue to do these reviews because it has helped me so much! Also thank you for having this channel, giving a Christian perspective on different books, and above all, for sharing your faith!!! I'm so so happy I "stumbled" upon your channel 😊
I loveee how you put stumbled in quotation marks!! Thank you for this, it’s really encouraged me. I’m so glad you’re here and that this video was helpful - I’ll definitely keep doing them then ☺️🙏🏼
Hi Lydia, I’m so happy that I found someone on the youtube who enjoys reading classics and is a christian in the same time (and also who has a beautiful British accent)! 😊 Thanks for your videos and also for this honest review on Gatsby… I’ve read this book for a few times and I really liked the language etc, those older books are much deeper than those modern ones… even though they are not christian books. Before I’ve become a Christian I thought that I have to find someone who will satisfy my heart. In my view, classics are a treasure but we have to be careful with not idolising them and not being influenced by them too much - because only Jesus is the only One who can fulfill us 🤍 So thank you once again, I’m so grateful for finding your encouraging bookish videos 🤗🌸
Apt analysis!! Yeah, I appreciated how the 1920's was depicted realistically, but not in a positive light. The readers watched the consequences of the characters' choices play out, and they were not happy ones, tarnishing the appeal. An interesting book, I'm glad you reviewed it!
Thanks for this! 😁 You have inspired me to read The Great Gatsby. (The short length of it is also encouraging! 😉) I got it free from a friend, and it has been collecting dust. I think I’ll give it a go and compare my thoughts with what you have stated here. It sounds like the author brilliantly wrote with purpose!
Your description of how Gatsby was surrounded by people at his parties but none of them came to his funeral really reminds me of the prodigal son. Once his money ran out, all of his friends vanished.
I love it! Such a tragedy. All Jay needed was the Lord. He would’ve provided everything for him including his wife. Not to lust after another man’s wife. Such a great Author.
I love the contrast you discuss about how, despite the seeming popularity of Gatsby, he was known by no-one. Whilst in comparison, God knows us fully and will be faithful to us and his promises if we trust in Jesus for our salvation and meaning in life rather than all the popularity and material possessions of this world. Thank you ❤
Hey, I’m also a creative major a devout Christian. I’ve been surrounded by secular people and institutions all my life. My family are mostly all unbelievers or are religious but not saved. I’m going into senior year at a secular college. It’s not horrible but it’s definitely difficult. I’ve been pretty discriminated against and a lot of the literature sometimes is over-sexualized and not really Christian friendly. So do you have any schools you recommend where I can pursue a creative writing degree as a Christian that isn’t influenced by the current political climate? I live in Pennsylvania. Thank you and God bless.
Hey! Great to meet you. I totally hear what you’re saying about some of the literature that’s promoted in these circles - that’s been my experience, too. It’s often so anti-Christian! In terms of schools, as I live in the UK, I’m not sure I can advise you, so sorry. But what I will say is it can be such a great place for witness. It’s so hard, yes, but I’ve had some great conversations standing up for the gospel when we’ve been studying explicitly anti-Christian books. God is the One who gives us the strength and words to do so. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help. 🙏🏼
I definitely agree that Fitzgerald isn't glorifying this lifestyle, but I also don't think this should be required reading in high school like it is in most American schools. Although I will say that I think it portrayed the 20s very well.
Yes I know exactly what you mean - it’s certainly got adult themes. I didn’t read this in high school else I might’ve had a different experience/viewpoint!
Your thoughts mirrored mine on a book I read recently for my book club called me before you by Jojo Moyes. Especially what you said Lydia about chasing after glitz, glamour, fame and money especially. I heard the echoes especially when you were talking about Gatsby and Daisy. Both were looking to each other to satisfy themselves. This is something that was illustrated throughout the book I was reading also. The thought I kept returning to was that maybe we shouldn't place romantic relationships above all others because they will never satisfy us fully. Spoiler, Lydia, we know this because we know the One who formed us and will never fail to satisfy us and give us rest. What you said about the wages of sin being death and how that was illustrated for you in the book was a key point as well. I just wanted to ask, when you were talking here, were you mindful of what the Lord Jesus Himself says in Matthew 10? Because I think that helps support what you quoted from Romans. In fact it's probably the other way around, Paul talking about what the Lord Jesus had already said. 😊👍
Just commenting for everyone else here based off Lydia's last point about being known! This song from CityAlight is a wonderful further explanation of what it means to be known by the LORD! ua-cam.com/video/cAyqqTuQ4CU/v-deo.html

What a great point about idolising the classics. Thank you so much for your comment and encouragement. 🤍✨

Wow yes you’re right!

Yes yes and YES. Spot on!

Wealth, Worth of Life, Love, Human Being....., Spirit of that time, Choice, Difficulty of relationship.... I read along time ago.... 😅
However, even as times change, literature shows human life. Just like in Greek and Roman mythology...

Which classics list are you working through?
I’ve linked it in the video, but it’s my recent video where I did a book haul of the classics I’m planning on reading ✨

I love when you make these videos though. It really is amazing how God can use human stories to point to His story in Scripture.
Which passage are you thinking of in Matthew? ☺️
@@lydiahoughton 10:26-31, especially verse 28. 😊
