Chhaap Tilak is a noun phrase coined by Ameer Khusrau in his poetry and its literal meaning is traces of adornment. Hindu women adorn themselves with Tilak which is called Teeka or Bindiya in Urdu.
Poetry is said to be the finest form of inner expression. It wouldn’t be prudent to infer the meaning of this lyrical poem penned by Ameer Khusreau without knowing the context of his expression; way of thinking and his personality. Ameer Khusrau, an iconic figure in the cultural history of Indian sub-continent during 13-14th century, a sufi mystic, a musical genius, a scholar and a poet, was a spiritual disciple of famous sufi saint, Nizamuddin Auliya. The “Chaap Tilak” is an expression of love in praise of his beloved, spiritual mentor Nizamuddin, addressing him as 'Nizam' in the lyric. The poet has its own unique style of communication in popular country dialect. Owing to its simplicity and melody this piece of poetry has been graced by every legendary voice of sub-continent for centuries.
It is believed by the mystics that in a mystical journey there is a rare point of time when the Divine Eye glance upon the inner heart of the seeker and illuminate it, and it is the precious moment of pure mercy when the inner transformation starts. The lyrics of this poetry were written in the language using the perspective of a young girl who eulogized the magnificence of losing oneself in the love of her beloved. And it’s really a joy to listen to this:
Listen this enchanting piece in the voice of Mir Basu Barkat Khan, our very humble Sufi and Saraiki Bhakti Singer from Pugal village, Rajasthan. A man with sheer talent and respect for his art, who desire not the riches but only the fulfilment of his work and art, and delivering the best of his capabilities.

Translation-
O my master!
You, the one who caresses the poor!
Did all yours
Now feel ashamed to hold my wrist
I lay on your doorstep, from lying, my work gets accomplished
Your eyes would open someday, we would convene someday
Khusrao, the play of love, which I play with my beloved
If I win, the beloved is mine, if I lose, I be with my beloved
Khusrao, the river of love, the waves flow opposite
The one who steps, drowns, the one who drowns, gets across
The tall gatehouse of my beloved, neither gets climbed or descended
Somebody say to Nizzamudin, take me holding my wrist
My identity, appearance; you took all away
Just by meeting my eyes
Eyes of my master Allahudeen, eyes of Nizzamudeen, eyes of Kutubudeen
By meeting my eyes
You said esoteric words, beloved, just by meeting my eyes
My fair wrists adorn green bangles
You held my wrists, just by meeting my eyes
You make me drink the wine of love
Intoxicated just by meeting my eyes
I took my self-made appearance to my beloved
As I saw my beloved’s, I forgot mine
O Nizzam! Khusrao offers his life to you
You made me a bride, beloved, just by meeting my eyes
