It was used in spinning thread. Winding the threads onto a drum, and leading the thread back and forth to space it evenly and put more thread on the reel. Same principle used in fishing reels today. Genius.

Je suppose que ce mécanisme est étudié pour filer la laine.
Le mécanisme ne peut fonctionner correctement car il manque 3 doigts opposés pour ramener la bobine à sa position initiale. Dans le cas présent, la tige mobile avance mais ne peut pas revenir
