The sheer provenance and history behind that guitar make it worth so much more than money. Huw was an under-rated player and a lovely bloke. Once you have cleaned them all up, it would be fantastic to see a video of them being played and appreciated by someone that could tell us more about Huw and his paying style and the way he set his guitars up. I am sure that would help Marion sell them as well
Saw Hawkwind in 1973. Rush was their opening act. I will never forget that Hawkwind concert. They played non stop, while a cartoon movie played behind them. Unforgettable.(TBH we never thought Rush would get as big as they did. We went to see Hawkwind, Rush hadn't even released their 1st album)
As a drummer who played with Huwy for a few years, it's so nice to see Lizzy again... Maybe the guitar that inspired the Spinal Tap sketch - he sure was protective over her & she got her own seat in the dressing-room even if the support band didn't. Support bands who didn't understand usually got threats of violence if they put their put themselves in the line of fire....
@Satanic Panic Fun and Games Well, people respected him generally. In earlier days he had a guitar tech called Lofty (for good reason) who'd fish him out of situations when he was a bit too feisty.. Huwy was sometimes "a bit confused" from being spiked in previous times & could sometimes get the wrong end of the stick. It wouldn't be fair on him to dwell on this, I can be a grumpy sod too & Huw was an absolutely lovely geezer most of the time.
Rick but equally, he'd leave it perched on top of his chorus echo, sat on top of his amp, on top of his cab, in a big wobbly tower of disaster waiting to happen! You'd probably be interested to know that I got hold of Mo Hone's old 20th anniversary Les Paul recently, and came here for tips on how to clean 40 years of Old Holborn out of it...funny old life ;-)
This is my new favourite channel. I love the way Ben explains the thought process behind every decision. I'm a terrible player, but the technical wizardry and creativity behind what this bloke creates is mind-blowing. It's a pleasure to watch someone doing what they love doing. Thanks mate!
Such a gorgeous guitar. Seriously good condition for the use its had. I like your tender touch and the respect you gave it. I'd love to be a proud owner of it.
OK, here’s my first comment on the channel, which I have lamentably only discovered this evening. So, by way of getting my bearings, I’m watching chronologically from the start of this year. What a wonderful opportunity to get a close look at this iconic guitar, played for so many years by the splendid Huw on so many Hawkwind albums and tours. I first saw Hawkwind way back in 1975, on the ‘Warrior’ tour, my first live concert experience at the tender age of 14 and I am still going to see them to this day. What a privilege to be entrusted with handling his legacy. I also just wanted to say what a brilliant channel. I’ve so much to catch up on. So let me just say it’s a real pleasure to watch and discover what Crimson are all about.
Good decision to clean the way you did - the buyer will get the guitar played by Huw Lloyd Langton and not a zoological specimen of a Les Paul purely for a serial number collection. Interesting to see a serious hard working vintage guitar and it not really be a "heavy relic" as well (apart from the bridge...)
Many many years ago I remember reading an article in Guitarist (which was a pretty new publication). It was by HLL and talked about starting life in a music shop and having to restring a guitar which immediately went out of tune. He was shown the locking technique which he advocated to all us eager readers. I think this is the same as promoted by PRS nowadays. It works!
Lovely work. It's so nice to see a guitar with a history like that treated with the respect it deserves! Videos like this can restore one's faith in humanity...
Wonderful guitar. I would completely agree with your approach to leaving it "as-is" for the next owner to make the decisions about setup and/or restoration.
This video was both exciting and moving for me to see, as a huge Huw Lloyd Langton/ Hawkwind fan. He is solely missed as he added real skillful musicianship to Hawkind which is lacking now sadly. Good decision to gently clean these guitars in the way you have Ben, so to keep them as authentic as humanly possible. I'm sure this was a tough decision for Marion to sell these fine guitars, but clearly needed for her own reasons.
Nice vid. Lemon oil is actually light mineral oil, quite a bit heavier than white spirit. Same as used for sewing machines. It doesn't gunk up like vegetable oils. The lemon oil content is negligible and just makes it smell nice.
Thanks for this. Sometimes we get so carried away with the joy of building custom guitars that we forget the basics, like taking care of the instruments we already have. I hadn't thought of using fretboard cleaner on the body but I will from now on.
Haha! Same! It's amazing how many professional musicians do stuff random dudes on message boards and youtube comments tell you is a stupid way of doing it.
I have a well gigged Ivory 2002 '68 Custom Reissue which was nearly as grubby as this one when I got it. I cleaned up the worst of it and started using it - but next string change, I'm going to take it apart and do it properly, inspired by your video. The tuners are corroded black all over, a big patch on the back down to the wood, all the other metalwork is worn and corroded back to the nickel bass coat and there's a hole on the upper rear bout where the strap button was relocated. It actually looks just like a Murphy Lab heavy Relic '68, but with less chips and lacquer checking!
I saw Huw playing this lovely Guitar with Hawkwind, on the levitation tour in 1980...personally I'd be happy to have it as it is...would be criminal to take away too much of it's character, and you were right NOT to do so, Ben :)
Just caught this episode after watching you for a couple of years. I was "iffy" on you but, l hung out at a biker bar where head tattoos were not out of place. The more l watched it was apparent that you knew your trade, plus l was appreciative that you made it relatable to us of a lower intellect. Just wanted you to know that there is a silent 😶 audience, appreciative of your efforts!
You may consider trying contact cleaner for the pick-ups: it is meant to clean electronics, it should not damage the pick-ups (but could have some effect on the guitar finish).
I have the exact same guitar. Years ago I made the mistake of replacing the bridge with a modern bridge that required larger posts, hence holes drilled. I wonder what it would be worth if I had it restored?
Wow! No one commented on the fact that it is a fairly collectable 20th anniversary Les Paul! It is quite a find whether Huw owned it or not! I have two of them, would have more if I came across others when they were affordable!
How on earth can you remain so calm while working on such an epic and iconic instrument... If it was me, I'd be starstruck and giddy as a schoolgirl...
You can tell it was a refret immediately because the neck bindings did not have the factory "nibs". Sorry, I'm probably as much a guitar nerd as you so I thought you might enjoy the tip. Love your work, btw. Make more guitar build project vids, please. You literally have me checking for the updates on those series.
The sad thing is because of the value of the instrument from its association with Hawkwind it is unlikely to be played or used again - which makes the restring etc a tiny bit redundant
Enjoy seeing guitars that have been played, not just owned, plus honest provenance of a known band. Well done !!! Obviously next owner will do whatever measures for his/her purposes. It still has plenty of riffs left......
Hi John, I'm sorry we missed your message. The guitar went to auction a few weeks after the video aired and sold quite quickly I'm told. Hopefully it will come up again one day. Vb. B
Weren't the LP Customs white??! The dictionary definition of well-loved and well-used. Sympathetic cleaning, with respect to the player, too. Great video.

Great video, a master at work. But I would have saved those strings. Took them off the tuner put them all into a package and place them into the case. There could be a variance in gage with the strings.
Cool show & good info to know. I have a 1978 Fender Stratocaster guitar which a few of my frets feel like they need to be filed down but I have never done it before & am a little reluctant to try to do it myself so maybe you could have a tutorial on how to file frets one day, thanks, good show by the way!

Its crazy how much the color can change on a guitar over time
That's what a nitro finish does. If it had been finished with a poly finish it would still be white instead of yellow.
refret was noticeable early on when you showed the fret edges not covered by the neck binding.
Had hoped for a bit of The Chronicle of the Black Sword.

I have a guitar hanging on my wall I haven't played in a WHILE. Looking at the dust, grimy fretboard, starting to corrode Floyd, brings 1 solitary tear
I briefly thought about taking the acetone bottle.
Wouldn't you risk swelling the fretboard wood by dousing it with so much liquid?
