Guitar Fret Leveling Why and How - Part 2 of 2

- Опубліковано 10 чер 2014
- This 2 part series shows how I level and dress the frets on a fender telecaster using as few specialized tools as possible.
In this video (part 2) I crown the frets ready for the guitar to be set up. The previous video shows the leveling process
Shown here is just the way that I do it, there are many different tips and tricks out there, I hope maybe you pick up one or two from this video.
Please feel free to leave any comments or questions, or like & subscribe if you enjoy it!
Your diagrams make all of the difference. Like a university textbook you understand that they are needed and you take the time to make them. This is the best quality video I’ve seen on fret work and I bookmarked dozens.
Both parts 1 and 2 should win awards for best how-to documentaries. Camera work, illustrations, editing and content were excellent. Thank you Sir for the best two documentaries on fret work, ever! Also impressed by the respectful handling of your customer's guitar. How about acoustic repair video?
While I do agree totally with your comment, I'd had also liked to have seen him address a single high fret first to show how it is tended to before moving on to using the sanding block to level them all.
@@normanbyrne9868 You can purchase a tool from StewMac called a fret kisser (not cheap though!). Allows you to easily level one individual fret and without taking off the strings....
I appreciate his efforts. And i wish i could buy him a Beer and chips just to show how much i appreciate this!
I agree
I can't disagree. Very good video.
Duncan, today I dressed my frets on a new ES-335 and I'm am so blown away and beyond extremely happy. For years I have struggled with getting my frets correct, and have not had any luck with any of the guitar luthiers either. I like my action very low, and finally I a system so well explained by you is getting me the fretboard action I have always strived for. Not only is the action where I want it, but the guitars tone, volume and sustain has improved tremendously. My ES-335 has the action of my '65 SG. Thank you so much for providing an "excellent" demonstration on this technique that has eluded me for decades. I hope you provide more videos in the future. Articulate, concise, and to the point - perfect!
BILL GRUBBS, P.E. well done with your guitar mate - i'm so glad you found some tips in these videos to help you get good results - and these es335's are beautiful guitars and deserve a lovely fret job, so good on ya and thank you so much for watching :) ... remember as well bill, there is nothing magical in doing these jobs - so the next thing you want to do to your guitar just think about it logically step by step - "what is the problem ... what are the possible solutions?" ... a bit of time on youtube and your own common sense will usually get you close to the answer - I hate this conception that working on guitars is some great mystical secret prevails ... it's really not the case ... just use your best judgement mixed with a little research and practice on a cheap guitar - you'll find you can do most things that you need to :)
duncan wallace - You got a real good teacher attitude.
Just watched parts one and two and I think it is the first time I have felt confident enough to try this myself. You have opened up the black art.
Thanks.
Absolutely superb pair of videos. The best demo of the fret file I have seen.
Me too, VERY informative.
extreamly well done.. deserves much credit.... instructor should do more videos... a natural teacher... much appreciated.. well spoken..... no unnecessary rambling...
I wasn’t disappointed with your second installment. Great video! Thanks again
Brilliant! I have never done anything like this before. I bought a guitar cheap guitar to play on and frets were all out of wack. I did what Duncan has showed us all and if you take it easy and methodically its simple. The best. Thank you Mr Duncan Wallace
Credit where credit's due... brilliantly described, clear simple illustrations, excellent details ie camera angles etc. This series of videos has given me the confidence to do my own now! Thanks Duncan :)
Damn good video for fret leveling. You kept it simple without trying to "sell" us something!!
Thank you so much Duncan for these videos. I've learned quite a bit from you. I'm excited to be able to use some of the techniques you've been so gracious to share. Looking forward to my best fret and neck setup yet! You're awesome!
Excellent tutorials mate, thanks for putting these videos up.
No faff, no unnecessary bollox, just clear & concise well explained and well demonstrated, step by step instruction. I've saved these 2 videos to my guitar tech playlist for future reference because I have a mind like a sieve 😆
It's a pity you haven't got more videos on your channel, you explain things well. 👍
I've watched several other Fret "how to's" and this two part series is most outstanding! I concur with KB below
This was simply well done. Very informative for beginners as well as well professionals.
Thank you.
Cant thank you enough for taking the time to make and post this video, as well as the first video!! Really made it make perfect sense to me! Excellent job, Duncan!
Excellent job of demonstrating and explaining the entire process. It has been a great lesson. Thanks.
Very nicely done! I have dabbled in doing my own fret work, and picked up a few nice pointers from your videos. I like the fallaway, that is something new to me, and will be something I do on my next fret job. Thanks again for sharing this with us!
Just excellent videos complete with the caveats that these are just the methods that you use.
Thanks for both of these videos. Very clear images, diagrams & explanations.
The best of these types of videos I have ever seen & I have changed my plans for how I will try to improve the playability of my guitars. Exiled Scot in North Carolina is very grateful.
Best vid on this subject I have seen on UA-cam, well done. Your experience and knowledge belies your age!
Wonderful work! Such attention to detail and care of the instrument. Fascinating. Thank you!
These are some of the best videos I’ve ever seen on any subject on UA-cam
Well done!
Love the pride and care taken here. Thanks for sharing!
This is by far the best video I've seen on fret levelling, excellent work and thanks a lot!
Thank you for posting this! A true professional approach to the fret work. Great video presentation!
This has been the best demonstration of a fret job I have seen on UA-cam well done .
Really good 2 part video the guitar looks brilliant at the end, thank you Duncan
Truly professional job from start to finish. No better vid on yt.
Thanks for your videos on frets leveling. I have to say that I have watched so many videos on this subject matter, but yours are the clearest and make most sense because you take time to provide graphics as well as verbal explanation. You also demonstrate the use of common everyday tools instead of specialized tools, which is wonderful for us mortals (not professionals).
best tuto on this task on the web. Great drawings to help understand fret profiling. Thank you!
This is far the best video I have watch, for a most knowledgable tutorial I've seen in a long time. Thank you Duncan for sharing your expertise !
2020 and your video is still the best reference I found to do this job, thank you
The best fret work video I have seen since I began my fret research 3 months ago. Thank you for the detailed work on making this incredible video.
This is by far the best “how to” for re fretting a guitar, iv been looking for a good one for a few days no, this had simple instructions, no fancy words or tools, straight to the point, thanks man :)
Thank you again for this video series. This is at least my second time watching these, but likely a few times more. Excellent video work and narration. This is a real service to the guitar playing community.
THANK YOU!
This was a very helpful video. I re-fretted a bass using parts 1 and 2 as a guide and it plays great. I don't have the frets shining like brand-new yet but I can take my time with it now that I know how. Great video, Duncan. Thanks.
Thanks so much for taking the time to put together these 2 videos in an utterly coherent and logical manner. The diagrams are fantastic, and you struck the perfect balance of not spending too much time unnecessarily on any one portion, while spending enough time on parts where it matters. I'm just about to start my first fret leveling job and I've been reading and watching everything I can find on the topic. I basically had most of the info I needed, a bunch of info I didn't need, some flat out wrong info, and a bunch of different methods for various steps along the way. Your videos totally pulled everything together for me and answered the questions I still had. Thanks again!
Sir, you are a craftsman! Thanks for the outstanding tutorials!
Hi Duncan, Thank you for sharing! The explanation of the proces, the drawings and the high quality of this video helped me a lot. Best video i found on youtube for leveling and crowning.
What a superb tutorial on how to level frets. No ego, no bullshit, a pleasure to watch from start to finish. look no where else. Thank you so much.
Hey Duncan, this is the best video I have seen so far and wow, that customer must be a happy chappy as the frets are almost lit up after all the work and polish!!
I have a couple of cheap guitars I will use as practice to work on my better guitars later .Ill definitely be getting some of these tools as well,so I just want to say thank you for enlightening me on this fretboard lesson you are a top bloke mate!
In all aspects, a fantastic pair of videos! Thank you, sir!
Extremely educational.. I learned 10 times more in your videos than anything I've ever seen before. My confidence level just took a huge leap forward. Thank you so much for making these outstanding videos!
You are an excellent teacher. Your instructions are clear and straightforward, and your demonstrations are just enough to give a good feel for the details of the process. This is the first video of this topic that increased my confidence that I could do this. I am sorry to see that you have so few videos. You are good, brother. Thanks.
Terrific video. Very clear and concise. Great attention to detail. I am about to attempt my first go at levelling, crowning and polishing and these two videos will be my go to. Thank you.
First class videos, Duncan. The instruction is clear and methodical, as are the graphics. I've never seen better, and I've learned so much in the process. Thank you!
This is a brilliant duo of tutorials. Finally understand what, why and how!
Thank you man!
THE BEST video I have seen on this process... Thank you very much for the time and effort you put into this one.. Now to put all of my new tools to use on a practice neck before I dive into a few Fender's that SHOULD have a much better fret job than they do from the factory... Thanks again!!!
Superb work and a super good job. You've done this exactly right!
I agreed with all the good comments. This is the best video i've ever seen on leveling. THANK YOU !!
This is the best level, crown and polish videos I’ve seen anywhere. Really excellent and super easy to follow.
Best video on youtube on fret leveling! Great job, illustrations are wonderful!
Just like part 1, this again very well explained and filmed. Great job!
By far and away the best, most complete informative video I have had the pleasure to view on this topic. Absolutely first class in every way. Thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent, helpful video. Very kind regards.
Excellent graphics, they help TREMENDOUSLY! Thank you for taking the time to create, edit and post your videos. When shaping frets I work on the lower frets first because I use them less..so if they don't turn out perfect it's okay.
Love this... gave me confidence for my Restoration of a guitar given to me...
Truly enjoyed this video! As I begin to hammer into my guitars and basses, after 40 yrs of playing, I always leave it to the pros but I usually like to know my instruments....and this is a good time to acquire some knowledge about fret work. Glad I found this video! Thank you!
Parts 1 & 2 were sooooo good. I just ordered a diy guitar kit and will surely need to do some fret work. Thanks to you, I know how to do this task (hopefully not but probably!) with every day tools. Thanks!
I couldn't agree more with the positive comments! I hope you make more of these! Maybe a full refret and a nut replacement?
wow. You have the gift of elucidation, Duncan. I'm going to attempt a fret job soon, and your videos are how I will get it done. Cheers from a half Scot in Canada!!
The best fret work video out there. Like the no fuss, simple tools aproach.
Thanks so much for this! Easily the best video I have found on the fret leveling process!
Beautiful job, your attention to detail is amazing.
Absolutely the best fret leveling and crowning videos on the internet.
Most brilliant instructional video I've seen on UA-cam. Congratulations sir!!
Duncan - very nice job on these two video's. Clear and detailed guidance. Well worth the time to watch. Thanks!
Watching both videos give me the confidence to give one of my guitar necks a fret tune up. Need to get all grits of sand papers you used. Thanks very much for sharing your technique
That's the best how to video on anything to do with guitars I've ever seen! Thanks alot!
2 of the best, VERY best videos I have ever seen regarding this type of work. I'd love to send you my RG to do the frets. BRILLIANT! Frome start to finish, Well done!
Outstanding video. Explanations on what you are doing and why plus the illustrations and video close ups are perfect. Thanks
By far the best videos on this topic .
Thank you very much for sharing your art with all this attention to details. Well done
Hey, man. That's a great explanation. There is no doubt that your video will help a lot of people who try to discover the luthery by yourself, and a lot of experienced luthiers in the whole world.
Great videos! I recently decided to start doing my own guitar setup and maintenance. Your videos are clear and concise and very helpful. Thank you!
Awesome videos! Detailed cohesive description of a detailed process. Illustrations were very helpful for the microscopic parts. Kudos for whatever it's worth.
BEATIFULL 2 videos. Thank for the well explanation, camera, instructions, graphics. And all of that with regular tool, tape, rubber band, piece of plastic... without buying expensive specific tools. Really Good!!!
Amazing I was looking for a video to do this during the weekend and you just cover all with a bunch of info and techniques, thanks.
I love how true craftsmanship shows thru as much in demeanor as in technique. you remind me of my younger self in a different discipline but with the same mindset. Thanks for the great video. You got a lot of compliments here deservedly so...
both these episodes are really informative. Thanks man
This was awesome. Thanks so much for the incredibly detailed, beautifully done instruction videos. So helpful....
This video is a gift. The length of the video and the segmentation of courses are perfect. It was very enlightening thank you very much.
Duncan,
I really enjoyed your video. Thanks lot. It was clear, concise and explained what you were doing and why. I'll continue to look out for your instructional video.
Thanks. Chris.
KBorham, you expressed my thoughts exactly. Outstanding video in all categories.
Rare Footage Award. I can't see a hole in this presentation let alone techniques and methods. Holds water across the board in every way.
Amazing explanation watched both parts beautifully explained and non technical, thank you so much for all your work in sharing your obvious skill.
Mr Wallace i commend you on your precision skillset demonstrated most successfully, your style and technique were explained and exemplified simply and carefully , without any redundancy ,banter or irritation. Your methods for guitar repairs are visual proof that the slow and steady-handed approach "wins the race"! Thank you for teaching and sharing with the rest of the world the secrets of your craft.
Top notch educational video. You could charge for this course, so thanks for your patience and generosity in sharing with the guitar community. You are what we Dubliners call a decent skin.
Very nicely done... Great video. I will be attempting this on a kit I built from ebay and if it all works out I will be re-fretting my 22 year Fender Strat. Thank you for a great tutorial.
So I just leveled my frets step by step using your videos ,They turned out perfect. Thanks for such a GREAT tutorial.
What an excellent video, so clear and so well presented. You have produced the finest instructional videos ever on what many consider to be a 'black art' . By far and away the best tutorials I have seen. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to produce two wonderful. informative videos. A Masterclass.
This video is priceless, one can learn an awful lot! thank you very much!
This video is excellent. Thanks. The best I have seen on the subject by a country mile. I have learned so much from watching.
Thank you. I watched both parts. The finished fretboard looked great!
These videos have been soooooo much help for me! I bought a new Ibanez rg1070pbz premium that has beautiful jumbo stainless frets that I really hated to sand on. I kept getting fret buzz from about the 11th fret up any time I lowered the action. This video gave me the confidence to do my first fret job on a $1300 guitar
Brilliant! Very patient & meticulous work. I was a bench fitter in the sixties & always had very high marks for my test jobs & later a toolmaker so I definitely appreciate & respect the precision shown here! Excellent videos, just wish I’d turned to guitars earlier! Thankyou! 👍
As a guitar builder, I often watch others so I can continue to grow, learn and stay sharp. I loved both part 1 and part 2. He got to the point, no hype or nonsense just lots of great how-to info. I will share these videos with others to support him. I enjoyed my sandwich and soup while refreshing my knowledge with these great well made videos. Thanks Duncan!
Duncan, that has to be one of THE best instructional videos I have ever seen! I've done my own setups and maintenance for years. I've re-crowned frets and such here and there, but I've always shied away from fret levelling and gone to a pro. I have one guitar that has quite a few uneven frets, so I'm going to order myself a levelling beam and give it a shot. I have all the other tools, including the slotted straight edge, so the beam and some abrasive for it should be all that I need.
Many thanks for all the advice sir! You're a great teacher.
Honestly, one of the best demos ever!
Down to buisiness. Not a lot of meaningless small talk. Great camera angles. Precise step by step process.
Thanx man.
As everyone else is saying, this is a great pair of instructional videos. Thank you for explaining not just how, but also why. I’m learning now and this was perfect for me. I have watched many videos on the subject and you just put together many tips I learned elsewhere but didn’t completely understand. I would have loved to have seen a video of the set up on this guitar to complete the repair, if you made one, I can’t find it. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and skill.
As with he frst video in this series. EXCELLENT. Thanks again for sharing.
Thanks so much for this excellent video. This gave me the courage to fret dress my Tele. It turned out beautifully thanks your brilliant video.
