  • This 2 part series shows how I level and dress the frets on a fender telecaster using as few specialized tools as possible.
In this video (part 2) I crown the frets ready for the guitar to be set up. The previous video shows the leveling process
Shown here is just the way that I do it, there are many different tips and tricks out there, I hope maybe you pick up one or two from this video.
Please feel free to leave any comments or questions, or like & subscribe if you enjoy it!

Your diagrams make all of the difference. Like a university textbook you understand that they are needed and you take the time to make them. This is the best quality video I’ve seen on fret work and I bookmarked dozens.

Both parts 1 and 2 should win awards for best how-to documentaries. Camera work, illustrations, editing and content were excellent. Thank you Sir for the best two documentaries on fret work, ever! Also impressed by the respectful handling of your customer's guitar. How about acoustic repair video?

While I do agree totally with your comment, I'd had also liked to have seen him address a single high fret first to show how it is tended to before moving on to using the sanding block to level them all.

@@normanbyrne9868 You can purchase a tool from StewMac called a fret kisser (not cheap though!). Allows you to easily level one individual fret and without taking off the strings....

Duncan, today I dressed my frets on a new ES-335 and I'm am so blown away and beyond extremely happy. For years I have struggled with getting my frets correct, and have not had any luck with any of the guitar luthiers either. I like my action very low, and finally I a system so well explained by you is getting me the fretboard action I have always strived for. Not only is the action where I want it, but the guitars tone, volume and sustain has improved tremendously. My ES-335 has the action of my '65 SG. Thank you so much for providing an "excellent" demonstration on this technique that has eluded me for decades. I hope you provide more videos in the future. Articulate, concise, and to the point - perfect!

BILL GRUBBS, P.E. well done with your guitar mate - i'm so glad you found some tips in these videos to help you get good results - and these es335's are beautiful guitars and deserve a lovely fret job, so good on ya and thank you so much for watching :) ... remember as well bill, there is nothing magical in doing these jobs - so the next thing you want to do to your guitar just think about it logically step by step - "what is the problem ... what are the possible solutions?" ... a bit of time on youtube and your own common sense will usually get you close to the answer - I hate this conception that working on guitars is some great mystical secret prevails ... it's really not the case ... just use your best judgement mixed with a little research and practice on a cheap guitar - you'll find you can do most things that you need to :)

I have to say that I have watched so many videos on this subject matter, but yours are the clearest and make most sense because you take time to provide graphics as well as verbal explanation. Thanks so much for taking the time to put together these 2 videos in an utterly coherent and logical manner. The diagrams are fantastic, and you struck the perfect balance of not spending too much time unnecessarily on any one portion, while spending enough time on parts where it matters. I'm just about to start my first fret leveling job and I've been reading and watching everything I can find on the topic. I basically had most of the info I needed, a bunch of info I didn't need, some flat out wrong info, and a bunch of different methods for various steps along the way. Your videos totally pulled everything together for me and answered the questions I still had. Thanks again!

Duncan, that has to be one of THE best instructional videos I have ever seen! I've done my own setups and maintenance for years. I've re-crowned frets and such here and there, but I've always shied away from fret levelling and gone to a pro. I have one guitar that has quite a few uneven frets, so I'm going to order myself a levelling beam and give it a shot. I have all the other tools, including the slotted straight edge, so the beam and some abrasive for it should be all that I need.
Many thanks for all the advice sir! You're a great teacher.
