Peter Hitchens: Deconstructed

- Peter Hitchens seemed to want to be taking part in a different debate to the the one he was attending. Here is a clear example of either evasive dishonesty or a genuine case of missing the point.

Who agrees with Peter Hitchens? Do you want there to be a god?
I want us be in some simulation made by some superior species. It is more likely than us being ruled by the biblical god.

Yes, but only if I get to be the god.

Thank the heavens that Peter has the calm maturity to not take these challenges personally. Otherwise, you might expect him to respond with bitterness, personal attack, and a childish lack of emotion regulation if you ever sat down with him for an interview.

It''s amazing to see how these two individuals - Alex O'Connor and Peter Hitchens - developed over years and clashed in person.
Maybe he saw this video of him and this is why he went out from the interview xd

@@LeventeCzelnai Even if Hitchens never heard about Alex in his entire life, upon being contacted by him, it could have taken only a click or two on Google to realise what Alex stands for in general. That's probably why Hitchens was hostile in an interview from the very beginning.

Sigh. Someone wrote, shortly after Christopher Hitchens' death: "God's a bitch. Proof couldn't be neater: He takes away Hitch, and leaves us with Peter."
I want that someone's P.O. box so I can send them a body pillow to express my thankfulness.
Cruel but witty.
But it's my opinion too. I trust you respect my right to an opinion.
Cecilia Corbett: We can see what kind of people Christopher Hitchens' sad, fawning fanboys are when they regularly wish death on his brother.
"wish death"? Do you regularly take such massive illogical leaps? Or are you spinning up a smear campaign?
Came here after watching Peter’s tantrum during the interview-I’m sure Alex’s opinion of him has only gotten worse.
Peter's voice and talking style is quite similar to Christopher's, hearing such bs in that voice is disturbing.
esgaril ...yeah , exactly what I had though .
We lost our Hitchen but Christianity still got theirs...why ?
Me too. Also strange to hear the word "Hitchens" in a derogatory way from Alex's mouth but yeah. Peter's "arguments" are unworthy of any thinking person.
I think Peter sounds stuffy and full of himself. Christopher not so much. :-)
A little bit more pomposity though. 😂
They sound alike but Christopher is my hero.
6 years on and Peter Hitchens has not changed....and its Alex who exposed him as the bullying manchild that he is!!! Talk about karma! Keep up the good work Alex.
I’ve seen a comment some where of speculation PH is the anonymous HG Tudor the Narcissist.
He doesn't hate talking about this topic as much as he hates talking about drugs.
I bet if Alex had reversed the topics and started with God, Hitchens would have left the room after 40 minutes, saying, 'You are obsessed with God.' Hitchens has no intellectual humility; for him, it's not about knowledge, it's about hierarchy.
The issue with Peter Hitchens is that he’s more rhetoric than rigorous or analytical thought.
This is true, but curiously you could also say it of Christopher.
@@StraitKnopfler That's how it was often delivered, but underlying it was an impressive breadth of historical knowledge that surely came about from rigorous effort. Which is rarely something Peter is guilty of.
From what I have seen from Peter Hitchens is that he just wants to pontificate. I have seen that in debates, interviews or as a talking head on TalkTV. He can make a lot of fluffy sounding questions but doesn't want to engage with anyone who disagrees with him.
And the rhetoric ain't all that great.
@@zacharyshort384"I agree with it so it must have been well informed and researched"
Peter and his brother are both very intelligent, well-educated, well-read and good orators. They were both also very sure if themselves and arrogant because of it.

As far as im aware the hitchens had a classical education meaning they were taught about rhetoric which basically being charismatic and interesting to listen to when you are making an argument are major parts.
He reminds me of "Beans" from Even Stevens.

I am fairly sure that one day Alex will take the place of people like Christopher Hitchens and this fills me with joy
Einstein Dude I'm not sure if anyone can. Hope I'm proven wrong.
He's well on the way, hooray. There must be a god (just kidding).
More hero worship, like we need more of that
+paradisecityX0 read Nietzsche
I hope not. AJO can, and in my estimation, will be, far better. The ol' Hitch was not my favorite atheist activist. With his trademark firebrand, he beat the drums of war in Iraq, and wound up being not only wrong on the most morally reprehensible actions the aughts, but unapologetic to the end. When resuscitating his legacy, his cowardice is omitted, but I, and many atheists (and non-atheists), won't forget.
I really really hate taking part in this argument, but don't worry, in few years time, I will throw a total hissy fit because I didn't get to take part in this argument as promptly as I would like, having failed to resolve the first topic that I had agreed to argue over.
It comes across that Hitchens doesn't really when to debate anyone, it seems he just want people to accept what he says.
@@tommysmith7031That's a good description.
Somehow Mrs. Hitchens managed to suck all the intelligence out of Peter and add it to Christopher .
it would be bad if god existed millions of people burning in hell for an eternity for such trivial sins
trivial sins like not kissing his ass
He said the existence of God, not the existence of Heaven and Hell.
Who told you that with the existence of God a Hell and Heaven has to exist..?
Yeah true but peter is a christian so I assumed he was talking about the christian idea of god
There is an error in translations in Bible the fire and burning means that parties in hell are lit as fuck.
Lucifer hmm a guy called Lucifer wouldn't be trying to deceive us would he?
I definitely don't want the Christian or Muslim god to exist. Really, any god of a revealed religion. I wouldn't mind a Deist or Pantheist god.
+Drew LeBow I agree, the ancient Gods seemed to have a lot more fun...the Greek & Roman gods, even the Germanic/Viking ones ...Abraham was such a party crasher!
The Christian God (I'm sure you meant the Jewish God), the Muslim God, and the deist God are essentially versions of the same almighty God
J Sobieski Yeah because having children & virgins sacrificed, practically toying with people, & being total dicks sure were more fun that an actual God that actually cares about you enough to suffer & die so that you may be saved sure is a party crasher.
I would love for the deist god to exist. Sadly, I am unconvinced
The pantheistic religions have truly terrible gods. See the limitless idiocy of the gods in Greek mythology.
Well, if you didn't fully deconstruct him here, you have now. Or just let him deconstruct himself.
You should do an interview with him where you both discuss things like god and drugs and stuff. Be pretty cool as he loves to talk to about it.
Just be sure to ask him about the drugs issue - he genuinely loves being asked about drugs…what could possible go wrong eh
Plan it in the summer so he ends up getting hot cycling across London for it. He'll really enjoy the whole encounter.
And Alex should ask ''what about alcohol'' for 40 minutes because he fails repeatedly to make another poison appear safe! I'd really enjoy that.
Peter Hitchens: "God has to exist because I can't sleep soundly at night if there is no cosmic divine justice."
It disturbs me that so many people believe that which provides solace rather than sense.
@@theExperiencedVirginthat's the selling point of all religions.
Peter Hitchens is like the child who gets rejected to play the lead in the school play and tells everyone he wanted to be the tree, anyway. He rarely argues an actual position in debates, but spends his time talking about why the other position isn't worthy of his time to begin with and so there's no point in arguing. A handy strategy when you stand a good chance of losing the debate. He's the grumpy uncle who has an opinion on most things and uninterested in hearing other perspectives.
He's also the uncle who says he knows everything about what he has an opinion on but really only knows the facts up till about 2005
Peter's argument is just a sexy version of "Ya'll just wanna keep on sinning!" that we hear from folks with thick southern accents.
He's quite fond of the appeal to emotion fallacy.

The best way to wreck a Christian argument will always be quoting the Bible.
I love quoting "turn the other cheek" to christians. They never do, though!
Why? We wouldn't be Christians if we didn't accept the Holy Bible.
Well spooky, I'd say because the Bible says some really awful things. Plus it proves itself wrong with contradictions and failed prophecy so that might be another reason.
Quoting the rather off-putting parts of the OT you mean.

Who's here after Alex embarrassed Peter in a podcast interview
Peter mostly embarrassed himself.
@@JayeKaithat's because he never allowed Alex to finish his points. And whenever Alex tried to restate them, he would keep interrupting him
Peter embarrassed himself. Alex didn't do anything to embarrass Peter.
Alex tried to have a proper philosophical analysis of Hitchen's views, of a classically Socratic bent (though a sympathetic application of the method); enquiring about the views, presenting opposing evidence, analogous situations, and hypothetical scenarios to pin down exactly what Hitchens thinks and why.
Hitchens didn't like that.
So this is why Peter was cranky.
Death took the wrong brother.
Avvai Chandrasekaran
Really? Is that truly horrible? When people express disappointment with the outcomes of circumstance, you consider that immoral? In my moral judgement, Christopher did more good, and would do more good with his life than Peter ever has or will. Peter defends the indefensible and propagates a religion of death and sacrifice, whereas the worst that Christopher did was pollute the air with his smoking and drinking.
Christopher was a powerful campaigner for reason. He made clear that everybody has an innate moral sense and does not need a contrived fantasy figure to prescribe how we should live. Peter failed to understand that message.
To be fair to Death, Christopher lived a lot harder than Peter. He loved to drink, eat, smoke, party, and generally have a good time at the expense of his body. He likely had more fun in one day than his self-righteous brother has had in his whole life.

Love ur videos..
Im from jordan,
Lived my childhood as a muslim,
Thankfully im ok now, as I dont believe in fairytales anymore..
Back in school , 20 or so years ago,
We were in class learning about how great islam and Muhammad are, and how disgusting those who dosnt agree with him,
Im at the back of the class not paying attention as usual, quitly making jokes about other religions with my other friends..
Until I made the joke "look at em indians idiots, they worship cows, I ate their god yesterday" ,
And my friend's response was, andi dont think he actually knew how profoundly important what he said,
He said : "so what? They probably laughing at us as we go around the kaaba in Mecca in circles like idiots kissing a black rock"..
Ever since I never stopped thinking about how religions varie according to people, each holding his belief as the true one, and never heared an argument from our religion class teacher that wouldnt be fit to use by other religions..
And then I started to think how things used to be worshipped, like the sun, arnt worshipped anymore as we understand what it is..
Earthquakes was caused by god cus hes pissed,
Volcanoes was caused by god cus hes mad,
Storms, diseases, ... etc
Which left current mainstream religions in a tight corner,
And how to get out of this corner?
Wel...
God is in a different dimension, u cant understand him or prove his existence, also u can never hope to understand or prove his existence,
And u must follow what in his book, otherwise ull suffer for eternity,
In the end I watched a documentary on bbc about blackholes,
And it was as inspiring and as amazing as all religions combined,
And what made it even more inspiring and incredibly amazing,
Is the fact that its... true
Now that I know that there is no such thing as god,
I feel more weight of responsibility on my shoulders to be good,
I genuinely do, ..
Why?
Cus I know , its up to me to decide,
And only me..
JD atheist cool story. It improved my (rather shitty) mood.

"Why do Atheists want there not to be a God". It's weird because I've never said the word's "I don't want there to be a God", I don't care if there is one, I just simply require proof before dedicating my 1 definite life to him when he may not exist. On top of that, if there was a God and God was proven, life would be so much easier. all I'd have to do is wake up, pray and be good and with that I'd inevitably be nothing but happy.
+ColinCurran I'm a theist and a Christian. I just want to say that I like the spirit behind your comments. I hope that God reveals Himself to you- however that looks like.
Why are you attacking him for being Christian? By all means I don't see a logical conclusion to believe in a God or Christianity, but that doesn't mean you attack others who do. As long as he isn't forcing his religion in people's faces and he isn't trying to control the actions of others through his belief, that what has he actually done wrong?
Many people who are Christian do just as much for the environment as atheists. You can act like it's religion's fault for not believing in global warming, but from my experience it just seems to be an issue that's very common amongst Americans. So I'd blame Americans before Christianity.
I hate religion, as far as I'm concerned religion is the root to all the evil on earth. So don't tell me I don't understand the real danger of religions. That doesn't mean you attack someone for being religious because that won't achieve or change anything in this world. You construct logical arguments against theism in favour or atheism and over time you create more atheists and eventually it becomes dominant. Just like in the UK where most people are either atheist or spiritual, but mostly non-religious. This is also spreading across Europe generally where science and logic is in favour of belief and hope.
You're literally on a channel that's dedicated to composing clear thoughtful arguments in a neutral tone instead of aggressive and hateful. There's a reason he does that. Because telling people they're "stupid" and "foolish" won't make them think twice about the religion they follow. Only consistent logic coming from the correct place and presented in the best manner will there be any hope of change.
Do I think to myself that it is moronic to follow a religion? Yes, of course I do, to follow anything with little to no logic is naive to the highest degree. Am I going to insult and degrade a man for being what I consider naive? No, because that's inhumane. If he tries to force his naive ways down my throat, then yeah, I may throw out an insult. However Luciano never tried to force anything, he just hoped I'd one day believe in his God and provided me a compliment on my atheistic comment. Then you showed up to show a truly vile and negative side to atheism which is a turn off to those who aren't already atheist, and in fact, people like you are a big reason people refuse to label themselves as "atheist" and stick to words like "agnostic".
You think you're providing greatness with your agenda, in fact you're a hindrance on trying to achieve an atheist majority world.
+ColinCurran Thank you!
Man, watching him is like seeing a warped, inverted mirror-world, alternate dimension version of reality.

Well, here we are, 6 years later. Alex has had an interview with Peter Hitchens, who stormed off in disgust, claiming to be bored and tired of the interview topic. He outright accused Alex of tricking him into the interview under false pretenses.
After Alex warmly welcomed Mr. Hitchens, and before any discussion could take place, Mr. Hitchens spat out "So far, so good." I took this to be a dismissive gesture towards his host. It was "So far so good" because Alex hadn't yet engaged with him. Mr. Hitchens was quite rude, and got very angry when young Alex pestered him about his views on decriminalization of drugs and Portugal's policies. Our boy Alex took it all graciously and soldiered on. This offended Mr. Hitchens' delicate sensibilities to the point that he spent several minutes off camera barking into the room about what a weasel Alex was. Alex attempted to defend himself against the accusation of trickery but when he wasn't being heard, stated that he would post the interview online, regardless of Hitchens' objections.
My take on this whole thing is that at some point in the interview Mr. Hitchens remembered THIS video (which somebody likely brought to his eminence's attention) and had a "That's where I know you from!" moment. I'm surprised that someone of Mr. Hitchens' reputation could be so easily exasperated, so easily led in an interview with this relative youngster, and so unbelievably whiny about it. And they didn't even get to the subject of God!
In my personal opinion Alex OWNED Mr. Hitchens. The late Christopher Hitchens would have been so proud if there was an afterlife and he'd been watching from it ;)
The title of the video is 'Peter Hitchens storms out of interview....' It's a good watch.
He accused him of false pretenses because it was true. No faking being humble will change that.

it absolutely is him.
Anybody else noticed Dawkins in the audience? :D
Also Dan Barker and Michael Shermer. :-)
look what just came into my feed after... well... this week
How fun to see this just a short bit after watching his most recent abhorrent-yet-comical interview with Alex.
Deranged Albanian Nun would be a great name for a punk band.
They're a indie group operating out of Vancouver signed to the label Screaming Goat Records. Currently topping the charts with such hits as "Lumberjack Under The Bed" and "Waking Up Bright And Murdery"
So this is why P. Hitchens stormed out of your interview 😅
getting this video recommended to me now is quite funny.
This is why he actively hates you
It will be great if god exist .
Ok...which god ?
Shady 😂👌
After stumbeling on to this video today, I now got an incling as to why Peter stormed out of your latest interview. The guy obviously holds a grudge. My god, the man is insufferable.
This aged like wine
Funny to think that 6 years Alex would talk to Peter and we’d all realise how much of an actual twit he is
Excellent video as always Alex. Hitchens' essay was rather weak indeed. Nothing but wishfull thinking. Just because you want something to be true it doesn't make it real.
Peter watched this video immediately before Alex's recent interview with him.
Who else here after the podcast event?!
Yes 😀
Peter Hitchens, the not very clever and infinitely less intelligent member of the family.
I wonder if this was why Peter was so mad at Alex 😆
Maybe at a subconscious level 😂
Dear Past Alex-think you’re unimpressed now, just wait until you interview the man in the future.
"Peter Hitchens seemed to want to be taking part in a different debate[interview] to the the one he was attending. Here is a clear example of either evasive dishonesty or a genuine case of missing the point." on the O'Connor Hitchens 2023 talk.
I loved that he used the Hitchens' razor on Peter Hitchens, a little piece of a real argument from the smart brother.
Just come from your interview with Peter Hitchens, wasted your time interviewing him, this should have been your warning
Thank you for doing this channel Alex. More people like you should come forth and teach RATIONALITY and CRITICAL THINKING to the masses.
I’ve noticed that something peter says when he argues his point, he usually says that the opposition hasn’t made a good argument or the person arguing against him is useless, it is what he has said in many discussions
Watching this after his podcast with peter hitchens when wrong, didn't know he hated alex even before the podcast
So, if there was a god, why would it require anything of anyone... why would it even need us to acknowledge its existence. its a god, it shouldnt have human emotions that require constant attention from its minions
It is the other way around, we need the god to have peace at heart, and thats the correlation the god’s makes in the Quran 👌🏻
as well as he says anyone sins they sin against themselves as they are wronging themselves, and when they are worshiping him they are benefiting themselves 🌹
we don’t harm the god when we sins and we don’t benefit the god when we do good deeds, the god is The self-Sufficient (الصمد) which is one of his attributes in islam and there are 99 of them that tells us about him ❤️
“The Quran: an atheist perspective” ua-cam.com/video/2AvepssBwzY/v-deo.html
Here is a video of a former atheist his name is dr Jeffry Lang and he is a mathematician, his lecture is beautiful and it speaks about suffering and the purpose of life from the Quran perspective.
Peter Hitchens is utterly arrogant
Him: good morning everybody my name is Alex
Me : my name Alex
As soon as I get paid, I'm gonna pledge $50! I'm a huge fan of your channel and I need open discussions like yours to keep happening.
Can you send the $50 to me, please?
How can 2 brothers be so apart from one another, I miss Christopher Hitchens...
It happens more often than you think. I'm the polar opposite of my oldest brother, and not much like my older brother.
I've not met many brothers that were much alike.
My theory is that Peter, the younger child, with the same argumentative tendencies as his older sibling, he eventually went to take the opposite position simply to be different, or oppose, or set himself apart. He doesn't even like talking about him, and before his death he wasn't fond of talking to him.
Don't stop your work. It is so important. Be relentless in the search for truth and the denouncement of charlatans, my friend. I cheer you on.
I forgot about this video, all makes sense now
Do you reckon he saw that before the podcast?
Watching this after the interview very interesting
good morning :) spotted that haircut ♥️
You have 2 comments, just combine them
oh my god it's the phandom

Peter Hitchens is nothing compared to his brother. It's sad.
Yh he's still alive.
I have seen before what I think is this very Peter Hitchens video. It amazes me how literally silly it is. I could write a 13 minute comment referring point by point on how absurd it is, but the video does that perfectly.
It would take 13 minutes to list the parallels between anti-theists and the fundamentalist holier-than-thou
I don't know how Hitches gets an audience.
This made me sad I miss Christopher 😢
Now the podcast makes sense !
I find it odd that Peter talks with almost the exact same cadence and verbal mannerisms as his older brother. I have three older brothers and none of us talk like the other.
