Back when I first started mountain biking, there was a big difference between low end components and your high end, flagship mountain biking components. We were also seeing big leaps in technology with the introduction of suspension, disk brakes and suspension design. These days, the difference between top end components and entry level are much closer causing a lot of riders to over spend on mountain bikes and components. That is what we are talking about today.

I agree on so many levels. I rebuild old suspension, bike frames, brakes. The new stuff is just not worth the thousands.

The new stuff is SO much better there's literally no comparison. Like 2010 to 2020, 2010 is a wobble box in comparison. The riding position on bikes now, is way better.
The geometry is way better. The new stiff is only worth it if you want a really good bike.
Old stuff, like 26" wheel stuff? Is dead, worth zero on the market place.

It is night and day my friend. I MTB since 42 Years in the Swiss Mountains and never pay more that 4k for my bikes. My last one I did buy a year ago ( Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Carbon 2800k on super sale).
With this Bike and frame geo I never ever have to get out of my sattle while climbing and stop, I just go slower to relax. Also the Carbon frame stores and absorb energie while pedalling or breaking and gives it back like a spring feder, its completely nuts but it works and you feel it.
The carbon itself absorbs trail chatter and you simply don't fatigue anymore on longer runs. On top of the Hill you switch the flip chip into the low position and the bike gets slacker and the BB is 7mm lower to the ground.
Basically the faster you go the more stable the bikes gets.
But you are absolutely right, you can have fun even with older bikes, I also still own a Scott Genius with 26" wheels If I give that Bike to a never rider he would love it but its night and day away from more modern bikes, Just like a "smart"phone from 10 Years is night and day away from a 23/24er but you can still use it and it can be enough :)
My Stumpy has mid level specs now and for 90% of the time it perfectly fine, but if you compare those to high end gear ( which I did and test-rode for weeks). it's again night and day in rider experience.
      Cheers from Switzerland

Today was my second ride on my new 8K mtb and I am ecstatic about not only the light weight it also the precision and perfect performance I dream of and I’ve worked so hard to afford now. This! I have two 5 figure mountain bikes. I’ve been a mountain biker for 30+ years and have worked my ass off to get where I am. I’ve been riding enough to be able to tell the difference and appreciate it. I’m thankful to be where I am and I know I’m blessed to be able to own the bikes I own and I’m humble about it.
That being said I catch a lot of crap from people because I own and ride really high end stuff. They play it off as jokes more often than not but it’s just petty jealousy. And that’s sad and pathetic.
Just like in this video, it’s “poor man” elitism. The argument is always “I’m not poor I could spend 10k if I wanted to”, but the reality is that you didn’t because you can’t. Don’t be mad at me because I can and I did.

@@spiffpilot2589 You are so full of S it's amazing! I see dillholes like you in every hobby I am involved in. I wouldn't pay $10k+ for any mountain bike.. EVER!!! The reason being you are wasting money on pointless S that simply doesn't matter. It's straight up a placebo effect, making you think this expensive bike is somehow going to make you a better rider when it's irrelevant in the grand scheme. If you truly were riding a 10k bike to it's potential, you'd likely be replacing parts more often, because at that price point, they are built for weight weenies, not durability. They are made for the highest speed performance possible and anything less then blasting it down the trails at maximum speed is a total waste of money. What their probably laughing at is your $10k bike being ridden like a little old lady, but I'm sure you'll claim otherwise, that your some top end racer who wins everything they enter. Internet is amazing that way, everyone is king S in their own little world. The real truth is nobody gives a single F what you ride in the grand scheme. Though they may laugh, that doesn't mean they give a S, it's just something funny at the moment seeing $10K bike riding the local immediate level trails.

As a bike builder that rides $500 budget hardtails to top shelf e-bikes on a weekly basis, once you ride tens of different makes and models of bikes over your career, you really get in tune with performance aspects and small differences between different components. I tell people that I own an $8k bike because ‘I’m a spoiled little b*tch’ (which is partially true lol), though once you know exactly what price constitutes a impressively precise and durable bicycle, it’s much easier to appreciate the finer things. Some people buy big simply because they can, other buy big because they’re enthusiasts.

Still on my 2013 Stumpy Elite 29er. I rode it until the parts failed and replaced them w more modern parts. The biggest issue to keep the bike up is non-boost spacing in the rear. A cheap spacer mod allowed me to adapt my 100mm hub to a new 110mm long travel fork. Running a Pike Select 150/Deluxe Ultimate 130 and the bike is the best version of itself 10 years old. Also, it is alloy and only 30 lbs. In 10 years, I have about $6K told investment w replacement parts and upgrades-- carbon bars, covert from 2x to 1x drivetrain, expanded 10 speed cassette, carbon cranks (stock on the bike), XTR (stock), and new PNW dropper. I don't live mtns and don't really need a big LLS rig, but I secretly want one. My bike still performs top notch, and it is just the tool for the job. The rider is the difference. The FOMO is not enough for me to drop another $6K into a new bike.
Good advice and thanks for a stroll down Amnesia Lane w the a reference to the 90's bikes. Remember the Trek Y Bike? Lol.

The Box the Bike came in had a sticker on it with 5300Euro which they sold them during COVID... 😁 The Carbon frame is 100% identical to the 13'000Euro version.

I also did buy a new CAPiTA Mercury 158 W Snowboard recently for 350 Euro. its the 22/23Version with different top sheet (color) from the 24er but otherwise 100% the same with identical design.
They sell the 24er for 700 Euro.

I have been a bike mechanic for the past 5 years. Knew abaolutely nothing about a bike before this journey.
As a bike tech i get to work on and test out all the new and old components .
You get what you pay for to a certain degree. Until you get to the higher end stuff then its mostly weight savings. But there is a noticable differemce between a xt and xtr shifter feel. Its much but its there.
The industry is really good at always coming out with something new that we aparently never knew that we needed.
But quite honeslty for most people the middle of the road components are where its at. Best bang for your buck.
The bike market is in a weird place after the covid bike boom. Most manufacturers over produced alot of product hence all the crazy sales. Its definately a buyers market right now.

You get what you pay for & most people can relate to this through experience. I’m a lead mechanic at my local bike shop & have been in the industry for close to 20 years. Their is a massive difference between a bottom vs top tier bike model. It’s not just one component that separates the different models. It’s everything! The fork, shock, brakes, tires, rims, derailleur, cassette, chain etc. The bottom tier models are the ones that are always coming back into the shop to repair & replace cheap components that are failing out on the trails. Believe this. “You get what you pay for” It’s very simple

I had 3 surgeries before the replacement which was done in 2012. My Dr wanted me to put it off as long as I could for technology to get a little better because it was fairly new in 2010. I don’t have as much range of motion in my ankle as we thought I’d have, but it’s definitely more then what a fusion would’ve given me. I’ve had no problems or issues since so I wish you all the best. I think a light weight 130mm travel bike would be great for you. It’s plenty of travel for XC without sacrificing climbing ability like a longer travel bike would. Also have you thought about an Ebike? I made the switch 2 years ago because with my ankle replacement I just couldn’t ride as much as I wanted to & I couldn’t be happier. I can get out & ride longer & farther 5-6 days a week (weather permitting) and that’s something I definitely couldn’t do on an analog bike. It all depends on your budget though. Completely agree with this!!!! I’m 48 years old and started my career at bicycle shops in the mid 90’s. First mountain bike was a Specialozed Rockhoper- full chromoly frame, no suspension fork, Deore LX, 3x7 drivetrain.
I watched the bicycle industry explode with technology over the years. I was riding when the first Manitou and RickShox were introduced. I’ve owned all types of high end bikes over the years that cost thousands., S-Works, Yeti, Intense, Trek, Gary Fisher, Scott, etc etc etc.
Entry level bikes are insanely good at this point compared to the early days of biking.
Recently purchased a new Diamondback Sync’r on a Black Friday deal of 50% off for $700. Upgraded the crank and bottom bottom bracket to GX and shifter to XO also on Black Friday deal. Have about $1000 into the bike.
Sure it’s not one of the COOL brands but the geometry is light years ahead of the early days, 1x drivetrain is amazing compared to triple chainrings, Rockshox for with air spring and oversized uppers and through axle is super stiff and responsive. The bike rips and I have so much fun.
I races for years and still stay fit. I love dropping people that are riding $10k wonder bikes with my $1000 aluminum bike. Soooo much fun when they see the bike I’m riding.
It’s even more fun when I roll past people on my Redline Monocog. Chromoly single speed, fully rigid 29r. $750 retail bike.
There is really no need to spend more than about 3-4 thousand on a bike these days and anyone will get all the tech they need.

Training will make you faster. The only time a $10 bike or more, or a few ounces lighter will help is as the pro level when all top 10 athletes are doing everything perfect from diet, to nutrition, to taking the latest PED's. lol
I constantly drop people on the trail on my single speed chromoly hard tail. Just a few weeks back I started a climb, and some cat on a carbon bike with XX1 etc got on my wheel. Kitted up in a skin suite and all while I was in my baggies. I slowly upped the pace until we were both at the limit. My heart rate was 180 and above. I was in a world of hurt for sure. Half way up the climb I pulled away from him on the steepest part of the climb and continued to open the gap until I reached the top. So YES it does happed.
I raced for years, Cat3 road, Elite Mtn XC, and qualified for and completed Hawaii Ironman. In my prime I saw mountain bikers on basic bikes, in their baggies smoke me, so it's been done to me as well.
Heck when I lived in San Diego there was a kid that would show up on the fastest road rides in the area, in a white t-shirt, baggies shorts, entry level road bike and he was always at the front taking big pulls. It was amazing to watch. Even funner to watch all the riders on their Dura Ace bikes getting dropped by that kid.

I have never really seen as much high end bikes at the trailheads. It seems that most are driving recent models of pick up trucks also. I recently retired. Before I did, I purchased a Trek Fuel EX5. I've had it for around a year and half now. I put on a longer travel dropper, wider handlebars, tubeless tires. And just recently added a beefler fork. I noticed a change in the first three items. But I got the fork mainly because I'm 6'2" 270 and people told me I needed wider stancsions then the 32mm Recon that was speced on the bike. All you need is to have a decent bike, ride & enjoy it and of course maintain it :)

You have to shop a lot for components in order to achieve this but I refuse to pay anything more than 50% of MSRP and it's possible buying off season or liquidation...

Agreed. Wholeheartedly. As a lifelong motorcyclist and mountain biker the trend has been the same. Rare near unobtainable performance parts are de riguer today and 90 odd percent of riders cannot access that extra performance to h8t real value for money. It's just bling now. Spend less and pay for top course rides more.

I think there is a big difference between really entrylvl shocks/dampers and mid to highlvl variants. It was way worse 15 years ago, but still.. Riding a Gold RL35 in comparison to a Pike Ultimate makes big difference. Sure kashima is a lot more blingbling than performance. Regarding drivetrain options, I had AXS components and dropper and while they worked fine, I switched back to mechanical, cause I like the simplicity and pricetag in case of a breakdown. I use full deore on my ebike and XT and slx on enduro and hardtail. They all work awesome and you can save money there. In the end most of the money is in the frame on expensive brands. On the other hand I do own a Forbidden Dreadnought, a Giant Reign E+ e-enduro, a Cotic Hardtail and a Gravelbike and while all of them did cost quite a bunch of money, other ppl spend a shitload of money on other hobbies like cars and stuff. I am fine with my spendings and try to sell parts that I switch out and generally try to get good prices / buy used for the most parts anyways.
A big point though is the platform you mentioned. The polygon is an inexpensive plattform but by the time you want to try out a bike brand that has some cool inventions packed into their plattform, the prices rises exponentially. The ride feel does make a difference there as well. At least I think and feel taht way.

    • @Bike198

Component groups are where I think you can save the most money because the performance variance is the least amount there. My biggest ones are always wheels and suspension if you are going to spend the money for sure.

I disagree to a certain point. It think it largely depends on what type of trails you ride and what you need from your bike and how fast you like to go. For instance I can absolutely tell the difference between a Fox performance series fork with a Grip damper and the performance elite/factory with the Grip 2 (same difference with RS Select and Ultimate). The added suppleness, control and adjustability makes a very noticeable difference out on the trails I normally ride. Less so if I am doing slow single track or smooth flow trails with jumps that have smooth landings which do not ask as much from the suspension. Also with brakes, the added control and power you get from higher end brakes makes an insane difference on steep, loose and fast trails slowing down my 210lb body. For instance, even going from standard Codes to Code RSC's is a very noticeable jump in performance and feel (and SRAM guide T's and even Guide R's can just go straight in the garbage), although I will say that the performance delta between the Shimano SLX, XT and XTR is small with the only major benefit I've noticed with my XTR (with same pads and rotors) is better feel at the lever and it does not seem to have the wandering bite point that my SLX and XT's had. Also carbon wheels have been a big upgrade for me (also need high engagement hubs of at least 5 degrees or less). They stay true soo much longer than alloy even through massive abuse. Also better tires, which often cost more make a HUGE difference. The super soft compounds and stiff Enduro or DH casings provide much better traction, survivability and cornering support than a thinner tire with hard durometer rubber. With all that said, I will agree that a alloy frame is perfectly sufficient and a good place to save $$ and SLX/GX transmissions offer great performance for the $$ and gains moving to XO/XX1 or XT/XTR are marginal (SRAM SX and NX suck though). Carbon cranks and bars are absolutely not necessary although I will say that my OneUp Carbon bar made a big difference in riding comfort and was worth the $$ for me. But most important for me: suspension, tires and brakes are absolutely something I will never skimp on again.

I had no idea how much I'd get into MTB, so I bought a lower end Kona hardtail at $900. As I progressed over a period of 1 year, I did a bunch of upgrades to it totaling the price of the bike itself and a little more (Fork, BB, grips, pedals, cranks, wheelset, tires, and added a dropper). Then in October last year I nabbed a Nukeproof Scout Comp at 1/2 price ($1150) and let me tell you there's a huuuge difference, even with the upgrades to the cheaper bike. Geometry, suspension, braking, climbing, stability, speed, agility... night and day. I really like the upgraded Kona, but the Nukeproof just stole my heart. So I should have been better off buying the Scout at full price from the beginning, but I wouldn't have learned everything I did by going through this process.

I disagree. I feel like bike components have drastically changed nowadays with technology so low end vs high end is definitely noticeable, but it also depends on what your riding. If your just out riding fire roads & easy trails then yes, you don’t need fancy components, but if your riding the gnarly & steep black/double black diamond stuff you will without a doubt be able to tell & feel the difference between a low end vs high end model bike. If your totally new to riding and just out there taking it easy, then yeah I can agree with you, but for people that are in the sport at a high level this is not true. It all depends on your skill level. It’s like comparing a Honda civic to a race car. You can drive the civic around the race track slow, but you can’t go fast, have fun & push the limits like you could with a car that’s meant for racing.

The issue is when you've gone too high. At a certain price point, the parts are all about shaving weight and become less durable. To really get the money out of a $10k+ bike you need to be an extreme high level expert rider blasting at max speed down the trail. The parts wear out faster so you end up replacing them more often at higher expense, but people at that level don't care, it's all about shaving seconds and winning. So, if you aren't some expert, you have to stop at a certain price point where durability is still there which means mostly upper middle of the line stuff so that you aren't throwing money around for no benefit whatsoever.

I got a good deal a while back from a friend on a fully spec’d out yeti sb5c. It is however almost 10 years old at this point. But I just don’t see how all things being equal with me being the rider on my old bike and a new comparable bike, how I would be noticeably better or faster on a new high end bike. For a while the technology leaps were huge, but with the exception of maybe the 12 speed cassettes, the technology really has hit diminishing returns over the past decade. I just can’t rationalize ever spending 8-10k on a top shelf bike and the only reason I did it back then was because I paid 3k for a bike that cost 8k-10k to build.

There are products that are overly expensive, like the shimano xtr brakes, but you can go xt deore and save some money. It all depends on what's reliable but not hurting your wallet too much.

Frame, motor, battery and charger. Many that have been the sport awhile just want the frame, suspension kinematics and geometry. Not the spec sheet.

The overwhelming majority of this video is opinion presented as fact. I’ve been mountain biking since the 80’s and you are absolutely remembering the past incorrectly.
The gaps between high end and low end back then weren’t any more monumental than they are today.
The low end stuff today works for sure, but the higher end stuff works better and weighs less for the same strength - and ounces matter over the course of a bike build.
And as far as price gouging? This video is about 2 years too late. Almost everything is on sale right now - you even mention BOGO sales in the beginning of your video. So how are people getting gouged?
If you want to ride lower end/cheaper stuff, then ride lower end/cheaper stuff. No one is stopping you. There’s just no reason to judge people spending the money just because you don’t want to.
Just like there’s no reason to be an elitist snob just because you ride a high end bike, there’s no reason to be petty, snarky and judgmental towards people who choose to spend the money. And I don’t care what you say, I can tell the difference between a 10k bike, a 7k bike, a 4k bike and a 2k bike. If you can’t that OK, but don’t be preachy because others can.
At the end of the day this video is nothing but a played out and desperate effort for content.
