a tip that really helped me to nail this ... "countersteer in the air and point with the knees .... So if the landing leads to the right, you push forward the right arm whilst in the air; if the landing is to the left, you push forward on your left hand while in the air. Then, just point both of your knees to the landing". (maybe this way is easier to explain the part of "rotate in X-axis the bike") That as the guy explained this, will put your body weight in the right direction, the bike leaned to where it needs to go, you'll maximize the traction at the landing and you wont just fire your hips all the way to the other side so it looks like you couldn't return a whip. That was told to me by a dude wearing a redbull helmet on a DH bike with a bomber 58 on the front, on new dirt merchant's hip jump after the big drop ... so I guess he knows what he was talking about
@@richdrewtherideseries Sadly, not quite. I watched some clips if my jumps, and it looks like I'm doing it right, it's just that I do everything too early. My wheels start going in the air only 2 thirds up the ramp. How do I stop my self from preloading and popping up too early?
Rich Drew same! We are there almost every weekend. I will definitely be putting your tips from this video to some use the next time I’m out there. Hope to see you guys out there sometime. ✌🏼
Nice video Rich! I'm very Puerto Rican and you need to work on your Salsa🤣, however I need to work on my right to left hip jump. This is soul food for me. My weakness is right to left. Thanks for the content! See you soon!!!
Thanks E Money! Yeah, the play back on my Salsa leaves a bit to be desired. I think my girl Shakira would be a bit disappointed. I hear ya on the right to left, it's tough. Just gotta find a good spot to be able to get some solid reps. Cheers!
Thanks Mark! Very soon hopefully! We're starting to get a better feel for group restrictions and sentiment in the community. Plan is to have a schedule up by end of week on www.therideseriesmtb.com
Thank you!! They're Kali Protctives Strikes. There's a link in the text of the video (at least there should be ;) Use code drewbros20 for a little discount
That was good instruction, but I was expecting something completely different. Coming from a BMX background, hip jumps weren't this. These would be more just carving in the air. Hip jumps in BMX are going up a transition and rather than jumping over the obstacle (table top, box jump, etc), you jump and turn 90 degrees over the hip of it and land on the side.
also expecting the same. maybe 90 deg hips are mostly used in bmx and dirt jumps so in the trail this is as much of a hip you can get. also, i saw a vid from paul the punter where he got sam reynolds and kurt voreis explaining things about a hip jump where there is a counter steer involved in the air. cant really explain it much myself but when kurt was explaining it makes sense why you need to counter steer in the air
I hear ya Matt. I guess it's a matter of context. These are commonly referred to as "hips" in the conversations I'm involved in and that's why I labeled it as such. There is an area that has a completely 90 degree landing, but it's rarely used by the majority of riders I come across. I think the majority of my intended audience would never even venture an attempt on a 90 degree hip jump, but many would try a line like this. I'll think about giving a deeper explanation next time to provide some more context. Thanks for the input Matt!
Hey dude! I thought about adding in the counter steer element, but I figured I'd come at it with the description of rotating on the horizontal axis. It's a tough call in the moment, but I just felt that adding in the counter steer component might induce that twisting movement that I'd like to see people avoid. I'll have to check out how Kurt explains it, that dude is a LEGEND!
You're a great rider but honestly I would love if you could break down what you mean and do more. Eg "Don't twist, do rotate". How is twisting different from rotating? Unless you show us the bad "twist" action I can't understand the difference. The words themselves mean exactly the same to me. One of the hardest things for people learning is the language barrier - great riders use so many terms that they assume learners understand - but how would they? How do I go about not twisting? How do I know if I'm twisting?
Hey Jonathan! You bring up a great point. It's been a learning experience for me these past 6-8 months of making these videos. I don't script these, I write up a simple outline. This is strategic in hopes that it will feel organic and not robotic. The downside is that I don't always get every element explained. It's not an exact science and I feel like we are improving with every video. As far as showing the "bad" actions, that's difficult for me sometimes. I'm programmed to use a certain technique in situations like this and it's tough, and dangerous, for me to highlight that "what not to do" technique. I'll certainly take this feedback to heart and think deeper on our next projects. Cheers Jonathan!
Thank you! Great question, I'll do some digging to see if I can find out. I'm assuming the area was a slaughter pen of animals at some point, but I could be wrong.
Hi sir, love your video but i will be great if you can make a video using a hardtail mtb instead of a full sus for those hardtail hardcore out there. Like me 😄. Thanks.
Why does it feel like most people are right foot forwards even though they’re righties? Any specific tips for hitting a hip opposite to your front foot, so left foot front with the hip landing to my right? Or does nothing change
left foot front hipping to the right is the natural way for a left-foot-forward'er (such as myself, in fact there I am doing it in my profile pic!). I use the same technique to hip to the left as I do to hip right (still with my left foot forward) but it feels less natural.
Rode that jump at 2:00 last month, doesn't really seem like a valid hip jump, was pretty straight. When I think of hip jumps, i think of at least 45deg if not 90deg directional change.
Pro UA-cam Tip: Turn off the midroll and popup ads. They are distracting and unnecessary. Gives the impression that you care more about the profit, than you do the content and quality of the video. Just do front and end ads only. Never interrupt the video with popups and midrolls.

Really appreciate this thanks
My local bike park isn’t allowed to teach these, so I really appreciate this content. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for another informative and fun how to! Can’t wait to employ what I learn once I’m back on my bike in full force! 🤘
Thanks dude! This one was fun
Rode this the day it opened! So sick!

I agree!! Brock is the man and we're aiming to raise the bar a bit more in the coming months. Certainly a massive benefit to have him on the team.

Of course! Hopefully soon.

Yeah that’s what a “hip” is to me too
I’m with you guys. These were more like transfer lines. Our big hip jump at my local spot is a 90* hip. Lol.

I took it to mean, dont twist, in similarity to a whip. If you watch closely, the shot of rich rotating on jesses, youll see a perfect example.
Great teaching as usual👍
I keep wondering where the Slaughter Pen name came from? Is there a story behind it...?
Thank you! Great question, I'll do some digging to see if I can find out. I'm assuming the area was a slaughter pen of animals at some point, but I could be wrong.
Yeh that trail name is a bit offputting if it doesn't have history 😂 trail looks awesome fun tho!
Where do I get one of those unicorns for my handlebar?
Dude, where can I get the RD shirt you are wearing??
Excellent video, BTW.
he said, 'are you ready', and didn't point!! a breakthrough advanced media for Mr Drew .... ;- ]
James, I can't even BEGIN to explain how difficult that was for me. I'm very glad you noticed it though.
Where exactly in Australia are those 😍😍
HAHA!! I guess I need to start saying it as "The OZ Trails NWA!"

They better not Jerry! ;)
Those hips must be Kardashians... WAY too big for a skinny man! ;P
0:16 My eyes!!! Jab them out with a sharp stick pleeeessseee! :(
Visualize whirled peas.
Oh stop it John, you know you were impressed wit my moves ;)

allways thought those hip swinging dances looked crass with women doing them, looks even worse with you doing it Rich man !
YES!! I agree with you Richard.
