Turning your back to a person was to consider them not a threat to you, of course that’s a major sign of disrespect in a warrior class of people.

Yes, there are many things that western people don't understand about Asian martial arts, the nuances. People think it is ridiculous but that is a part of the evolution of Asian martial arts. There are a lot depends on races, religion and cultures. For example, in my culture we cannot raise our legs above our navel, and we cannot head kicking because it is super rude. We believe that head is "holy" area in our body, you can't just touch or play with people's head and hair. Perhaps it is funny to rub children hair for some people, but in my country that could lead to a big fight. Original Silat don't have high kicks because of it, so all the high kicks in Silat today are modern influence from TKD and others. As the video mentioned, we also cannot show our back side, not just to the VIP but also to anybody who watched our performance and duels. But this no longer strictly followed by most out of modernism, only the really traditional folks still follow it. These customs shaped the martial arts and the answer on why it is look like that or that in the martial art world.

@@Chadi I already mentioned before about why there are Silat with low stance and there are with high or no stance at all, depends on where they live, rural and village area or high-class town and cities.
It is hard to explain to foreigners about things because martial art is a culture, and it is related to religion and the race of the ones who practice it.
Another example, in old Silat, there were rituals for summoning spirits and demons, it is a part of all things, the martial art itself is the ritual. You know, the tiger style isn't just imitating a tiger, but originally it is also summoning a tiger spirit into you. The same with eagle style or whatever, even old ancient heroes' styles, we're summoning their spirits.
But when the Malays becoming more Islamic, much of these practices are either banned or transformed into Islamic way. By that, it changes the martial art.
