    Great video. Do you have to separate the seed from the pedal? Just subscribed!

      Yes I do. It is real easy after they dry. I just leave them in the paper bag and shake it real hard, works like a charm. Welcome and thanks for subscribing.

    After the seeds are well dried and ready to save in an envelope or bag, do they have to be kept in a cool/cold climate over the winter (like a garage/basement/refrigerator) or can you just put them away at your regular household temperature for the winter? Thanks

      We just keep ours in paper bags inside plastic totes in my shop. They should be fine in your house over the winter. If you wanted to save some for more than one year, then I would keep them in the freezer.

    How about when you plant them? Is it structured or do you just spread them?

      I just spread them. I do start about 50 in 3 inch pots to plant in certain areas around the Homestead, Zinnia seeds are so easy to start you can spread them about any where there is exposed dirt and they will sprout.Thanks for watching.

    I have a question! My poor zinnia leaves are nearly white with powdery mildew :'( Can I still let them go to seed and use them or will that lead to mildew in the bag and the seeds and just a big ole mess? Thanks for your help!

      I hate to hear that. We were lucky this year we didn't have many with powdery mildew. I would harvest your seeds and put them in a paper bag and let them dry very well. You might want to poor them out on something in a week or so after you pick them and check them to make sure there isn't any mold on them. Great question. If you have anymore questions let me know. How many years are the seeds viable?

    • @HippieHillHomestead
      @HippieHillHomestead  Рік тому

      If they are stored correctly 3 to 4 years. I have used some that were 5 years old but the germination rate wasn't very good

    One video I watched said that even if you get the seeds from one specific colored zinnia when you plant those seeds they may grow into a different color flower. Do you agree with that and if yes is there a way to help guarantee they grow to be exactly like the flower they came from?

    • @HippieHillHomestead

      Shirl, yes I agree with that. It depends on what pollen fertilized each flower. Lets say a bee gets pollen off a hot pink flower and lands on a white flower. The white zinnia is now pollenated from the hot pink flower. The resulting seeds would probably produce a light pink flower. If you want to keep your colors true, then you will need to hand pollinate. If you hand pollinate don't forget to mark the flower so you know which one to keep the seeds from. We use a piece of yarn tied around the stem to mark ours.Thanks for watching.
