I have to admit, not all woodworking is about expensive tools and materials, the Joy of building this chess board with your daughters is worth more than a million dollar shop. Those smiles got my sub. Keep the good work.
I’m so glad UA-cam suggested this video for me! It’s the first one I’ve seen from your channel, but I absolutely fell in love with it when I saw you were taking great pride in teaching your kids and cherishing the time you spent together. As the father of two and grandpa to three, I really appreciate seeing other dads invest their lives into the younger tribe following them. I look forward to watching many more videos from your channel. And yeah, Jason is an incredible wood worker. I’ve been watching Bourbon Moth videos for years now.
As a dad of three girls, I definitely love the project time you spend with your daughters. And I feel that struggle between including them 💛 and just _getting the job done_ 😂 You’re a good man! Keep it up!
I totally LOVE your video!! And I’m a girl dad to! You just pulled at my heart strings!!! I have done so many projects with my daughter through the years. She is 19 now and we still do projects together when she is home for college breaks! Keep the videos coming. Thank you! Chris.
Thanks to Busted Knuckle Woodworks for sharing your link. I am a Bourbon Moth fan, but you with your daughters are wonderful and definitely worth watching. When I was a young girl, while my sisters were in the kitchen with Mom, I was in my Dads workshop helping with anything he needed. I have my own shop and of my 4 children, 3 do woodworking of their own (2 girls and a son). Now my grandchildren are working along side me in the shop. The common thread with all of them is the pride they take in creating something with their own hands. Your girls will never forget this time with you!!
You inspire me. Thanks for sharing all that. Lee from Busted Knuckle is definitely one of my UA-cam besties! My girls aren't the type to naturally be drawn to woodworking, but they're learning to love it. They're amazed when they hear about a grown man that doesn't know how tools work. Their future husbands better be ready. :)
I have never commented on a video before, but you hit a nail for me, this is an idea had to see how easy it is to make projects that others make, and you did it with fun, humility and family... and to add, a workshop you have clearly spent some time creating.... Well done!
I just came across this video. You and your beautiful young ladies did a great job. Way to take what you have and make such an awesome memory piece with it.
I adore that youre doing projects with your girls. I did stuff with my dad in the shop all the time. He showed me how to do all sorts of things when i was a child from woodworking to metal working to electrical and I am all the better for it in my life. As they get older, I hope they appreciate all the time spent with you in the shop as much as I did with my daddy-o.
Thank you. My dad was and is a great guy, but he was never into this stuff. My brother and I both figured it out independently and fell in love with it. I have to admit that he's better than me.
I just discovered this video, love it. Like you I'm a proud dad with two daughters. I wasn't a woodworker when they were young, but they helped with remodeling projects, and learned how to do repairs. When each left for college I gave them their own basic set of tools. The guys on campus thought it was awesome that a girl had tools. They got used too, assembling kit furniture from Target & Walmart. Nice build, it inspires me to do this chessboard build with my grandsons. (No granddaughters..😢).
I checked on Amazon and the Chinese sites, and none offers "cuties". After watching your video, it is obvious that cuties are essential to the enjoyment of woodworking and are far superior to "Moths". And, they do not require Bourbon. Your clever employment of them to carry plywood sheets postpones the onset of "Chronic Male Back". Really enjoyable!
I'd just like to say that slapping together your own drum sander is rather impressive. I'm also a fan of the "build with what you have" method! Your comment at the end is also so true. Whenever an expert gives a time estimate we all need to remember that it's based on his skill level and experience...which most of us don't have. :)
OMG this makes us so happy. What a great project, a cool family vlog, and an absolutely brilliant YT video. Super impressed, and loved every minute of it!
I’ve never watched a woodworkers videos solely for how to do something but rather inspiration for a project. Yes, Jason has a shop that we’d all love to have but it’s his way of doing things with those tools that I honestly enjoy. I just found your channel from this video alone and I think I’ll stick around and see what else you do. I appreciate the inspiration 👌
Thanks so much! Same for me. I love when a video starts out with somebody spending $3,000 on a walnut slab. Yeah...better pause the video and go get one before I go to step two. LOL
My guy i just wanna say that you are one of the few channels that I immediately subscribed to without finishing the video watched some of your other content love it so far, got to say will be looking forward to future content good work
It’s all about the kids. Was awesome to see you include them in the project. I have 2 boys; 11 & 3.. They are only young once. Again, awesome video. Well worth the watch!
I really appreciate that. We get ten to twenty years where we get to be active parents for a large portion of the day. I'm committed to savoring every minute of it, even if my career suffers. Thanks for watching!
very cool, thank you for showing all the trials and tribulations, i'm a noob that struggles with woodworking and it really helps me to see people show their compromises and imperfections. nice to see you teach your girls to use what you have at hand and to try, try again! good life skills
The chess board you and your daughters made is worth far more than one made by even the best professional. My most treasured possessions are valued by me based on who gifted them or how and where I acquired them. Memories are priceless.
I enjoyed the video and love the family-centered content. I’m a dad of 2 with another on the way, so I appreciate seeing ways to get kids into doing the hobby I’ve grown to love! Love the ideas! Gonna subscribe!
PRO SNIPE TIP: Just cut one of your boards about 8"+- longer and glue that one in the project. That way you have a lead and exit board to stop the snipe. GREAT project tooooo! !! !!!
Hey, thanks! I do something similar by taking a couple pieces of scrap wood to lead and follow the piece. That saves me on premium materials. Thanks for taking the time to comment on the video!
Just found your channel. I'm a fan of Jason's at Bourbon Moth and I loved this video. Like you I'm a "Girl Dad" and this has reminded me that I need to get my daughters more involved with the work I do. Keep up the great videos.
Nice job! Considering you didn't have all the necessary tools, it turned out pretty well. And, the MOST important part, you get to make the board with your daughters. That part is priceless, and something they will always remember. When they are older, they will treasure it.
Well done Sir!! Whether it took a half day or several weeks. The experience and time spent with your children is the priceless part as one commented. The memories will live forever.
Make sure to teach the kids to setup the board the right way--the right hand corner should always be a light square. In the video (9:30-ish), it's setup incorrectly. :) I love the use of the worm wood.
NP! Once you know that there is a correct way, you'll be blown away by how many T.V. Shows, Movies and ads set it up incorrectly. I helped my neighbor make a chessboard using the exact same techniques. He had an aged piece of oak I had to split up, and beforehand I had to explain that it wouldn't be that nice weathered grey once I finished breaking it down. So I did the ole vinegar/steal wool trick on it after. Turned out real nice.
For those that thinks it doesn’t matter, it really does. It changes the position of the Queen and messes up standard openings. As already pointed out, it’s often set up wrong on tv and in movies. That’s the first thing real chess players look for. Nice looking board.
Discovered your channel today and subscribed ASAP. I love how you teach and involve your daughters to work in the workshop. Keep on with it, it's really something special for a father to teach something useful to the kids.
Thank you so much! I've committed to putting them in every video project they want to do. I'd like to have them in every video, but I wouldn't be a good dad if I forced them.
You're a great Dad - it really does come through with the way you work with your family - Great project! Worth every moment - it also teaches the important life lesson that things go wrong, but it's how you react to these challenges that really does set people apart - you can give up, or look for alternative methods...A great thing to pass onto your children!
So glad the algorithm brought me to your channel sir, I absolutely enjoyed your wit and enthusiasm. I too have 3 girls and love spending quality time with them. First video I have seen of yours, and I am looking forward to more. I am absolutely obsessed with Bourbonmoth's channel as well. Great video!
1. If you had Jason's shop it would have been easier. 2. You can work with a glue up panel, if it's clamped correctly, in an hour. You don't have to let it cure overnight. Can someone make that chess board in 1/2 a day? Maybe. Will it take a week? Obviously it did. Could it be done, in one to two days, by the average person, with the correct materials and tools on hand? I think so.
I appreciate that. It could absolutely have been done in half a day, starting with square stock and a table saw with a better fence, and not having another job. A big part of the reason for overnight glue ups is that it's HOT in there, and hard to spend too much time in one day. Working on that problem.
Sure, but WW here has a ton of tools to speed up the process and it still wouldn’t be a half day project. It’s a good reminder to take anything any professional youtuber says is easy with a gigantic pinch of salt. There’s a loss of perspective as to what a regular Joe (or Jane, in my case) will find easy that comes with doing this for a living in a super well-equipped shop.
Damn! Probably the best video ever realistically demonstrating what is garage wood workers actually deal with. I have 1 electrical socket in Alabama to hot/ humid for resin work of any kind. I’m 64 when I’m 96 I will have enough clamps as I get 1 per birthday
That was awesome! Just watched another video and the builder's soon is seen doing nothing but holding a roll of canvas then sitting in a corner playing on his phone. You earned the title "girl dad"!
Love that you are including your daughters! I hope you've found the other women woodworkers out on UA-cam that they can get inspired by!! I think it would make great content of you teaching the girls how to safely do the work themselves as well! Best wishes!
Nice concept, well edited, and the humor was great. I believe you will look back and this is the video that started it all for you. I can't wait to watch some of your other content....probably tomorrow. Keep up the great work.
It may surprise you hear this, but as I've been researching the woodworking niche, yours is one of the channels I studied. Not sure why I didn't subscribe at the time, but I've fixed that now. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I like the smaller UA-cam channels that are on a real life wood working adventure. Builds that are made for the commoner. So I’m subscribing to your channel. Keep up the great video and commentary. ❤❤❤
Just came across your channel. I have to say, the comparison game is a challenge. Glad to see you having a little fun with it. Look forward to checking out more of your videos. Love that your girls enjoy spending time in the shop with you. I enjoy spending time in the shop with mine too. 👍
im not a woodworker.. yet, but i am starting to get some stuff together so i can start doing little projects. this is one of those videos that shows people dont have to start out with the most expensive tools, largest shop and knowhow to get started. you summed it up best by saying he is a consummate professional. hes been woodworking for a long time and doing something like that in 1/2 a day is probably pretty easy. thanks for posting a funny yet revealing video!
Thank you. One of the great things about woodworking, both on UA-cam and off it, is that everyone is glad to welcome someone new into the hobby. I used to have an armoire in an upstairs apartment with my tools. I drug them downstairs at every opportunity and tried to build on the lawn at my apartment complex. While I like to joke about my "worst workshop," it really is amazing to have the space and the tools I have. That being said, you can do almost everything with just a few simple hand tools.
That was a great idea for a video and great execution of it. Great to see your girls engaged with the whole process... hopefully I can do the same with mine when they're old enough.
Love that you involved your daughters, super inspiring have a boy and a girl and both of them share great time with me in the shop . actually they appear in some of my videos… thanks man you have a new subscriber here!
I absolutely enjoyed your video especially your video editing. I am glad your vid popped up on my YT. When you have 50k worth of tools like Bourbon boy I guess you can make the chess board in a half a day.
Nice down to earth video showing real dad life. That Jason guy...what a tool! (no, not really. he's a good guy). Chess boards have a special place in my heart. It was the first project we made in Junior High woodshop.
Girl dad ( and budding woodworker) here as well, with just about the same age difference with my daughters as I suspect you have with yours. Very well done and hats off to you for trudging forward despite the setbacks. The memories you created for them as well as you are priceless👍🏻🤙🏼.
Pretty cool Jason stopped in to check out your video and comment! Love His humor, you got the beard and cute kids, you never know you might be up there with Him soon! Nice video!
Bro ur INSANE , I cant believe u sent those clamps thru the planer like that, at least if something happened it would b on camera, keep doin stuff like that n ur following gonna explode like ur planer , THANX for the videos !!!!
Thanks for subscribing! I include them as much as they want to be involved. It makes the videos better, but more importantly, it makes them more competent and confident.
First time seeing your channel. It's awsome you got your girls in the workshop with you! Those moments they will remember much longer and with much more admiration in thier hearts doing this with thier Dad. Also it will teach them its ok if a project gets screwed up , it's how you learn from it and how you don't give up that's important! Life lessons and fun for the whole family. Love it love it love it!!!!
I appreciate the realness of this video. I’ve learned to enjoy the imperfect projects my five year old and I build. And also the scrambling to make something workout despite not having th me absolute best tool for the job at the time. 💯
I’d love to see to do this sort of thing with some of Woodworking for Mere Mortals’ projects. Your shop is way more equipped than his, it’d be interesting to see the difference that makes.
Heck yeah man!! Love the chessboard and the fact that you did it with the kids! Time doing things that you love to do, with the people you love is so precious.
I just found your channel and let me say, keep it up. I'm a fan of both Jason Hibbs and Brad Rodriguez but I do like the every guy approach you use. Like Emeril Lagasse always said, it's yours, make it the way you want. Keep posting and I'll keep watching
Huge props to you! Not everyone has Festool miter saws, Dominos, and 36” drum sanders in their shop. I will add that the older I’ve become and the ability to spend more for better equipment has made a huge difference in the quality of my projects. But, the fact you made this with your daughters is awesome! Memories made, skills learned, and a job well done! It looks awesome!
Just came across your video today and subscribed. Great job and so true to the way most of us do woodworking. Plus, your daughters did more work in this one video than I’ve ever seen The Foreman do in the many videos I’ve watched on the Moth. Nice job to you guys.
Love this amazing board, as it's so beautiful, unique, and there are so many games you can play on it ... and even with it! A family treasure that will last for generations! ❤ With love from Denmark
Hey, you got it done. And yeah, he’s had more experience, and I would imagine that he spent some time before the video making sure he had everything he needed and planned it all out. I do like watching him too. He’s good at it and has a good sense of humor.
😂😂 love it man!! Nicely done 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I'm speechless. Thanks.
Glad your good sport 😂 didn't expect u find this. 🤯
I haven’t had chance to watch this yet (add to watch later) but I’m intrigued as to how the mighty Jason Hibbs could ever be questioned…… 😂

Greatness 👍🏾 As Dads our time spent with our shop help is the most important. Build another one in a few years and then compare the evolution 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Thanks! That's a great idea.
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought this was going to be another hit piece on BM. Absolutely hilarious. Keep it up!
Thank you. You too! Your videos are really good.

Great job, Dad! Spending quality time with your daughters even as you're teaching them life-skills! Very heart-warming!

A few. Most female woodworkers eventually drift more toward DIY, but I still enjoy them!
Outstanding. Great with the kids. You’ve inspired me to video my 4 year old helping me 😂
That's great, Rick! Let me know if you post it on UA-cam. I want to see!
I like the smaller UA-cam channels that are on a real life wood working adventure. Builds that are made for the commoner. So I’m subscribing to your channel. Keep up the great video and commentary. ❤❤❤
Thank you! And I appreciate your subscription.
Just came across your channel. I have to say, the comparison game is a challenge. Glad to see you having a little fun with it. Look forward to checking out more of your videos. Love that your girls enjoy spending time in the shop with you. I enjoy spending time in the shop with mine too. 👍
Thanks, Drew. The shop is sanity for me.
I gotta say, that was great Dadding and building.
Thanks!
im not a woodworker.. yet, but i am starting to get some stuff together so i can start doing little projects. this is one of those videos that shows people dont have to start out with the most expensive tools, largest shop and knowhow to get started. you summed it up best by saying he is a consummate professional. hes been woodworking for a long time and doing something like that in 1/2 a day is probably pretty easy. thanks for posting a funny yet revealing video!
Nice work on the chess board and good sticking In there.
Love the fact you 8nclude your kids in your hobby
Thanks! I'm glad they include me in their free time!
Love this. It's beautiful. And your shop assistants are adorable. I love Jason, too. I watch so many of you guys and you are all amazing.
Thank you, Laura. I very much appreciate you watching, and so do the girls.
You and the girls did a great job. Much love my dude.
Appreciate it!
Watched one video and subscribed immediately! Keep ‘em coming. Your assistants are awesome.
Awesome! Thank you!
That was a great idea for a video and great execution of it. Great to see your girls engaged with the whole process... hopefully I can do the same with mine when they're old enough.
Thanks, Jiggy!
Love that you involved your daughters, super inspiring have a boy and a girl and both of them share great time with me in the shop . actually they appear in some of my videos… thanks man you have a new subscriber here!
Thanks! So do you.
Well done brother. Those beautiful girls are fortunate to have a dad like you.
I'm so blessed to be their dad!
I absolutely enjoyed your video especially your video editing. I am glad your vid popped up on my YT. When you have 50k worth of tools like Bourbon boy I guess you can make the chess board in a half a day.
Thanks for watching!
Nice down to earth video showing real dad life. That Jason guy...what a tool! (no, not really. he's a good guy). Chess boards have a special place in my heart. It was the first project we made in Junior High woodshop.
Thanks. It's a great project. Someday I'll even learn how to pour epoxy correctly!
Its not about the destination. Its about the journey. Good job.
Thanks for watching!
Girl dad ( and budding woodworker) here as well, with just about the same age difference with my daughters as I suspect you have with yours. Very well done and hats off to you for trudging forward despite the setbacks. The memories you created for them as well as you are priceless👍🏻🤙🏼.
Thanks for watching, Carlos. I did get a bit of a late start, but the perfect woman is hard to find.
Pretty cool Jason stopped in to check out your video and comment! Love His humor, you got the beard and cute kids, you never know you might be up there with Him soon! Nice video!
I was really honored that he took the time to watch it and comment. Thank you!
Fun video! I love your attitude towards woodworking with daughters. Building memories.
It helps that they're such awesome kids. Thanks for watching!
Bro ur INSANE , I cant believe u sent those clamps thru the planer like that, at least if something happened it would b on camera, keep doin stuff like that n ur following gonna explode like ur planer , THANX for the videos !!!!
New sub here. Thank you for a vid including your daughters. Representation matters especially for girls! ❤❤❤ More of these please 🎉
Thanks for subscribing! I include them as much as they want to be involved. It makes the videos better, but more importantly, it makes them more competent and confident.
Love it! I thought I was the only one with funky shop tools! 😂
Ha! Wouldn't it be great to do a tour of some really crappy woodshops? Actually, that's a good idea...
Appreciate it!
I appreciate the realness of this video. I’ve learned to enjoy the imperfect projects my five year old and I build. And also the scrambling to make something workout despite not having th me absolute best tool for the job at the time. 💯
That's incredible. It's faster and easier without involving kids, but not nearly as rewarding.
From one girl dad to another, job well done Dad. Subscribed!
Thank you!
Nice, nice job. Well done to you and your daughters.
Thank you!
I’d love to see to do this sort of thing with some of Woodworking for Mere Mortals’ projects. Your shop is way more equipped than his, it’d be interesting to see the difference that makes.
Steve's on my list! The most valuable tool in that shop is him, though.
It was a lot of fun. I like your use of inexpensive materials.
Thanks, Michael!!
Heck yeah man!! Love the chessboard and the fact that you did it with the kids! Time doing things that you love to do, with the people you love is so precious.
Exactly.
I actually met Jason at our local home depot earlier this year. Pretty cool guy. He was by some materials for the office space he was working on.
I'd love to meet him someday. He seems like a super nice guy.
Wow! great video and very cool having the kids help out. That makes any project worthwhile.
Definitely! Thanks for watching.
I just found your channel and let me say, keep it up. I'm a fan of both Jason Hibbs and Brad Rodriguez but I do like the every guy approach you use. Like Emeril Lagasse always said, it's yours, make it the way you want. Keep posting and I'll keep watching
I appreciate that! Glad you enjoyed it
Loved it. If I made videos they would be just like this. So glad I found your channel.
Me too! Thanks.
great video.. that unguarded pulley on the drum sander reminded me of some of the tools my dad would make.
I just ran across a scroll saw my grandad made that also had an unguarded pulley.
Thank you, Lee. We do what we can with what we have. Not that I wouldn't mind upgrading that table saw.
Just came across your video today and subscribed. Great job and so true to the way most of us do woodworking. Plus, your daughters did more work in this one video than I’ve ever seen The Foreman do in the many videos I’ve watched on the Moth. Nice job to you guys.
I don't think there's any arguing with that, but The Foreman has unique charm. Thanks for subscribing!
Yes he does. LOL. ✌🏽🙏🏽
Fun video. Nice concept. Cute helpers. Very good dad-ing.
Thank you, Trev!
Very enjoyable video.
Thank you!
Love this amazing board, as it's so beautiful, unique, and there are so many games you can play on it ... and even with it! A family treasure that will last for generations! ❤
With love from Denmark
Thanks, Pia! We love it too.
congrats on figuring out the youtube code. idea + title/thumbnail + surpass viewers expectations. Good job!
Thanks, Drew! I'm honored that you took the time to watch this video.
@@worstworkshop it was great! Good luck on the next one. No pressure.
Awesome, i need that hat, can't wait till my girls (1 and 3) are old enough to work in the shop with me.
Cherish the time, Josh!
Great video - I really enjoy your style and sense of humour. I look forward to checking out more of your work!
Thank you very much!
Hey, you got it done. And yeah, he’s had more experience, and I would imagine that he spent some time before the video making sure he had everything he needed and planned it all out. I do like watching him too. He’s good at it and has a good sense of humor.
He's hilarious. Did you know he did a pilot for a TV show that's on Discovery+?
Despite the problems you had i think your chess board looks awesome. I think the worm holes in the mesquite really add character.
Thanks! It's help up to six months of abuse pretty well too.
