- Today, I will be checking out the three cheapest new cars for sale in America for the year 2020! After the departure of the Ford Fiesta, these three are the remaining players for this low-profit, low-volume segment. The 2020 Nissan Versa S is brand new model for the 2020 model year, so it's got everything to lose against these older competitors. The 2020 Chevy Spark was redesigned in 2016, but remains a strong competitor and is literally the cheapest new car in America, even besting out the other two. And in the final corner, we have the 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage, which has been around in America since 2014 and is the first Mitsu to be in one of my comparison tests. Which one would you want in your driveway?
I compare these sedans in seven different categories:
1. Value (Price and features of each vehicle)
2. Safety (Both active safety features and passive IIHS results)
3. Power-train and performance (Engine, transmission, 0-60 time)
4. Fuel Economy (EPA rated fuel efficiency)

As you'll see from other mirage owners in the comments, they really arent as bad as the reviewers make them out to be. I recently bought a 2017 mirage G4 sedan and although it isn't quick by today's standards it has zero trouble keeping up with everyday traffic and I consistently average over 45mpg in my commutes. Dig around online and you'll see owners praising them for their reliability and efficiency. With gas prices creeping up every day I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase.
My 2015 Mirage hatch is a very well behaved and fuel efficient little shoebox. Perfect for a GrubHub driver such as myself.

I used to be a Mirage hater based simply on car reviewers, never bothering to take the time to actually look into the car itself. Long story short I bought a brand new 2018 in August of 2019. I do delivery with Amazon full time using my own vehicle. I put on over 31,000 miles in the first year of ownership. I am hard on my cars yet this Mirage has been the most reliable car I've had (I've had 2 Corollas, a Vibe and a Matrix-all Consumer Reports picks, and I had problems with all of them). Low MPG for me is mid 30's, normal is low 40's, and I can easily get into the mid 50's when conditions are favorable. I've also been a die hard stick shift fan for the past 30 years, yet this car, with CVT, is one of the most fun cars I've ever driven (btw I owned a FIAT 500 Abarth manual for almost 7 years and 84,000 miles, so I know fun). Contrary to this reviewers claims of the amount of power being unsafe on the roads, I have daily evidence that points to the opposite. I quickly learned how to modulate the gas pedal, and utilized the CVT and power band to my advantage so that I can take full advantage of every bit of my cars power, and do so LEGALLY. Couldn't do that even in my Abarth which doesn't have crazy high power output. I've had zero issues in the Portland (and occasional Seattle) traffic and 'lack of power'. I utilized the Ds mode on my car daily to get a perfect downshift every time I need it or need the RPM's held. I've been up STEEP grades, fully loaded, AC on-yeah it was taxed, but it has NEVER struggled. The car is SO easy to drive, to park, has an insanely small turning radius, decent ground clearance for a sedan. and all the options I want/need (AC/Cruise/Power windows, locks, keyless entry, CD, Android Auto, auto off headlights and speed sensitive intermittent wipers to name a few). Oh, and it has a crazy amount of space in the interior and trunk for such a small exterior footprint. The only caveat I offer about the driving fun is that I have the 15 inch rims with Vredestein Quadtrac 5 tires on my car, which help with grip in acceleration and corners. People can hate on this car all they want, but I have daily evidence to contradict all of that unwarranted hate on this car. Oh yeah, all for $12k out the door with full warranty, tires that are inexpensive, oil changes are 1/3 of what they cost for my FIAT contribute to a crazy low cost to own and maintain.

As a 1990 Miata owner who's used to the constant praise and popularity of the vehicle, and seeing how much hate the Mirage is getting. It's cool to see that there's actually a number of people really happy with this car. I've been heavily considering buying one. Just been worried about the power a bit, the reliability, availability of parts/price, ease of repair, as well as the competition of other vehicles in this price range. I still can't quite decide yet if a Mirage is the right car for me. I was only able to sit in one before it was being sold (made it just a hair too late unfortunately). But the dealer is actually ordering me an exact copy but in a different color. I'm wondering if I should go for it when it arrives.. Hmm..
@@Justin-xi6ue I have a former rental Mirage and have owned it for two years. At 110,000 miles, I can tell you that it is a great simple commuter. I was also initially concerned about power. But since the Mirage is also lightweight, it can actually accelerate and keep up with traffic pretty well and even climb steep hills if it needs to. I have yet to make any major repairs on it so I wouldn't worry about parts. Even if you require them, RockAuto and Mitsubishi dealers have parts available and they are relatively inexpensive. It is also cheap and dummy simple to work on for maintenance. I would image any repairs would also be simple to perform since there is plenty of space under the hood and everything is pretty easily accessible. It's also surprisingly practical and because of the soft suspension, also confortable for city and highway driving.
I do have some complaints though because it is not a perfect car. The interior does feel pretty cheap. The newer Mirage is more well equipped than my 2015 model, but I'm not sure if the quality of the interior has improved. The handling is a bit on the weak side; it is lightweight and on small skinny eco tires so I would be extra cautious in heavy rain about hydroplaning (though many people in snowy areas have praised the car for being easy to drive in the snow). The fuel tank is also very small. Its max capacity is only 8 gals and by 7 it's already flashing that it needs fuel. This is offset a bit by the high MPG (35/43 though I usually hover around 31/40 because of my lead foot. Others have claimed to get higher than the EPA estimate but YMMV) but it would be nicer to have more fuel for less trips to the pump. And while it is solidly built, it does tend to let in quite a bit of wind noise. Not the noisiest car I've ever been in, but definitely not the most quiet.
These are my opinions though. If none of the drawbacks are deal breakers for you, then I would definitely recommend the Mirage.

I got my 2019 mirage hatchback with 0 miles. I started doing food deliveries + Uber and Lyft. Here I am three years later since the moment I purchased the car and almost 70,000 miles in it. I have changed the brakes and tires only ones and its regular services + 2 service to the transition. (Every 35,000 miles) and that's all. Still running like day 1. 😀
I recently bought a 2020 Chevy Spark & I have say I’m reasonably impressed with it. Fit & finish is good & it’s actually enjoyable to drive. Picked it up just to have a good 2nd car with warranty & I find myself wanting to drive it more lol.
Can you fold the seats all the way down? I heard you cant for the future 2021 model unless the driver is 4"11. I liked the Spark when I test drive it and the Chevy dealership near me was letting them go for $10k. I'd really consider that if I wasn't doing rideshare and only commuting to work.
@@kylemas2005 I had a 2017 stick shift Spark and it was a hoot. But my wife eventually wanted a larger car. She said the Spark was like a motorcycle side car, without the motorcycle.

car ever ! it thinks it's a race car - it's right ! 47 MPG with maximum
coasting in neutral. NO buttons on steering wheel. roll-up windows.
98 HP, and it loves using ALL of them. old school dream car. yes.
Wait until those recalls kick in. I'll never buy a small Chevy again. They had me driving around with rusty fuel lines located right by the exhaust pipe. I had my kids in the car not even knowing I was driving an exploding space shuttle on the street.
I drive a 2020 Versa S with the manual transmission. I’m averaging 46 mpg or higher.
Even I can't get that much on my 2018 accord hybrid many times.... luckily today I got 49 exactly but often it's below EPA estimates.
Part of the problem here is that the review for the Mirage is for the G4 variant. While it is nice enough as cheap sedans go, the Mirage also comes as a hatchback which is far superior in my view, being cheaper and having a folding rear seat like the others while being even more fuel efficient and slightly faster.
In terms of reliability, the Mirage still outshines the other two. I’d still go for the Mirage G4...
The CVT is crap
They all have solid engines, it's the CVTs that reduce their reliability. Good thing these budget cars all have manual transmission options

Here's a supposedly impartial reviewer who had an ax to grind against the Mitsu from the word go.
That low torque and hp means the JATCO CVT7 will far outlast in the Mirage vs the Versa & Spark. Simple 3A92 engine, the Mirage is extremely easy to work and cheap to maintain. This car has cut my fuel costs in half. I drive Uber part time and Im avg 46 mpg combined daily driving 150 to 200 miles and I still usually have a half a tank of gas on a 9.2 gallon tank. At $2.34 a gallon in Atlanta it costs me $11 bucks avg to fill up the other half. These cars kick ass at what they were designed to do. Save you $ and be reliable delivery/rideshare/commuter cars. If you can get one for under $12k brand new, your making a good choice for the money. Nothing beats a brand new car with a 100k mile warranty.

@@markjou9799 We got our G4 for $10k. It was a 2017 and the 2018s were about to hit the market. Mitsu will work with you, they're hell bent on making a comeback and have done well these last 5 years in terms of growth.
Depending on where you are, you'll want to check with your insurance company before buying any of these cars. The subcompact class as a whole suffers from higher insurance premiums due to higher injury rates when they are involved in an accident. In fact, the Nissan Versa and Mitsubishi Mirage are rated among the 25 most expensive vehicles to insure in the United States. If you live in a state or city where insurance is already expensive, the annual insurance costs for all 3 of these cars will sap away any savings you would have enjoyed from their low purchase price. In my case, I traded my Hyundai Accent for a 2 year old Ford Escape, I'm saving $400 a year as a result, assuming a 15 year service life, that's a total savings of $6,000.
That’s not the 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage, 2020 has a redesigned front grille along with some other options.

aamirqz I know overseas the Mirage received a major redesign for 2020, but here in the U.S. we also get some slight changes for 2020, you can see it on Mitsubishi North America Website, is not much but is enough to differentiated for the 2019 model year.
USA doesn't get those changes until 2021. All of the 2020s in my dealers lot look identical to the one in this video.
It's also massively more expensive.

Id go Mirage. I test drove a few. Those fuel numbers are conservative. I got 54 mpg at 55 mph. 42 City. This is common. They discount them Big Time. Base manual hatch (best version for $) is often $10,000. They have a 10 year warranty.
Nissan makes Junk. Theyve been poorly built since over 15 years ago. I can care less about the few extra features.
Spark, same. give it a few years. These Daewoo cars have had plenty of issues. Keep in mind a base hatch is commonly $10,500.

My ex wife had a g4 mirage stick. I had a cvt hatch mirage. My mom owns a stick g4. None of us have had issues. Ever. And. At 70 mph on a 300 mile trip in the hatch, coasting downhill, I got 55mpg. Over 40 in town. Not even kidding.

@@gregoryfaulkner5345 I don't hypermile, do delivery for Amazon so often have a full load and idling stops. The worst MPG I've seen is high 20's....4 hours of constant running with idling for about and 1 of that for delivery stops, with AC blowing full the whole time, and a crap ton of hills. But, without fail, by the time I get home and without trying I'll be in the mid/upper 30's. Not even trying to get good MPG I routinely get 40-45 driving from my house to the warehouse to get my route. The couple of times I did hypermile I got almost 57 mpg, but without trying I've seen 52 in similar conditions. Also, I've put 31,000 reliable miles on my car in the first year of ownership.

We're considering trading a 2017 Kia Soul 5-speed with 62,000 miles on the odo that is gutless and averages only 31 mpg in warm weather; mostly for a daily 60 mph commute; 60 miles round trip per day, for a 2020 new, 5-speed Mirage ES. If we can make such a trade paying south of $5K, we'll probably pull the trigger. We're going to first test drive one this week. Before we got the Soul, we test drove a cvt version and found nothing objectionable with the Mirage as it is made out to be in reviews, but we still need to drive a 5-speed version to check out how that version drives. Ironically, the drive-off price that we paid for the used Soul last year was the exact amount that we could have gotten a new Mirage for at the same time. We opted for the Soul, because my wife wanted one. She's now decided that she doesn't like it. I don't like it only because it's way too slow and small to do that poorly for mpg and I never liked it's on-its-heels, boxy styling. If I'm going to drive something that slow, with that little bit of utility, it's got to do better than 30 mpg for a very advantageous rural commute. For comparison, I can achieve 25.5 mpg for this commute in my full size F150. I could get about the same as the Soul in a mid sized Saturn Aura with a 2.4L Ecotec; 3600 pounds that I owned previously; and I could get 46 mpg in a Jetta TDI that weighed 3200 pounds and had 177 peak ft-lb torque at 1800 RPM that I once owned. So even though the Soul rides great and is roomy for a compact and has a well-put-together interior, it's mpg for what it is doesn't cut it. From all indications, the Mirage would get me back up to the mpg I was garnering with my 2006 Jetta diesel 5-speed, but with less refinement. The Jetta cost $22K out the door back in 2006. So the Mirage is about half that price today considering real dollars.

Just bought a 2021 Chevy Spark and I love it. It has more room inside than I anticipated and it feels good on the road. Manual roll down windows and manual locks were worth the under 15 thousand dollar price. I also love the mystic blue color. My dream car!
I just bought 2020 Mitsu mirage cvt with auto roll down window and auto lock for 12k 2 months ago before tax, let's just say I am glad I didn't buy spark. Maybe what people said are true all along, all hates mirage except the owner of Mirage
Spark is best kept secret in car industry. For bang for your buck with great CVT transmission I buy another spark. I have 2016 with 80 thousand miles not one penny put in .

I know these are statistics but my Spark (CVT) gets 340 miles out of a tank with mixed city and country road driving.
Then the refreshed 2021 mirage is released can you do the same comparison? Maybe add the Rio as it is cheaper than the versa.
I have a 2017 Spark base model with the CVT. I honestly love it. It does what I need it to do just fine. I honestly don’t see how you could get around my area in a Mirage with its little 3 cylinder. If I already have to rev my Spark to get it to go up hills sometimes, I would hate to see what abuse I would have to give a Mirage living in my mountainous area. My Spark goes decent though and still gets decent gas mileage. I would happily trade a few MPG for an engine that can actually get me up a mountain without trouble. The only funny thing with my Spark is sometimes it gets a little inconsistent with its gearing or something, like it will take off fine one minute and then go slower or hesitate the next. I imagine this is pretty much the standard for CVTs though. My dealer supposedly gave me a lifetime powertrain warranty though, so I plan to drive it until the wheels fall off.
The EPA rating is conservative to say the least. I just bought a Spark with a 5-speed manual and I'm getting 46mpg highway and around 39 city. You can cruise at 45-50mph in 5th gear and the tach reads less than 2k rpm.
I bought the 2020 Versa SR model and I’m very happy with its 17” allowed rims. I live in Atlanta and I’ve driven to New Jersey and back and had a nice ride doing it. That little cat loves the road.

i test drove a 2020 spark the other day but 2 days ago i purchased a 2018 mirage. and i liked the mirage better.. and with it being 2 yrs older (reviews iv read said the 2020 mirages didnt offer any new specs or features) and 20k miles i saved a few or more grand.. but the spark was too basic for me and too small. the mirage offered better features and more room for me personally

I think the biggest miss in the review are a couple of things:
#1- Using the sport mode the Mirage can get down blew the Spark in 0-60 and actually does fairly well merging.
#2- There's nothing on reliability. The mirage is far and away much more reliable than either of the other two. You see Mirages going over 200K pretty frequently, the Versa and Spark are nearly junk cars after 100K. The point you made in the video saying that the Mirage is the oldest design is correct, they have been using the same engines for about 13 years but OTOH, that's because they don't have any issues. IMO, Mirage is the best car of the group because I value dependability and bang for the buck more. Even in these inflated car prices today you can find a very low milage 2018-2020 Mirage for anywhere from $10K-$14K. They will last you a decade. Also some dealerships like where I bought mine will also give you a LIFETIME WARRANTY on the drive train because they're damn near bulletproof.
I have heard that the Versas are actually decent when they are properly maintained....but that doesn't say much in the face of a car which can be beaten and neglected all the way to 200k...so when a prudent delivery driver like me actually maintains it to a high standard I bet it will see some stupid high mileage. If I make it to a million, do you think I could convince Doug Demuro to re-review it?
Consumer reports for determining reliability? How about checking owner reviews going back 5 years? The Mitsubishi Mirage has a proven 3A92 engine that has been in the European and Asian markets for almost 20 years. Also all three cars utilize the JATCO CVT7 transmission, guess who you dont hear alot about in regards to premature cvt failue? Mitsubishi Mirage. Why? Because the low hp, low torque, and low curb weight all contributes to less stress on the steel belts of the CVT. Suzuki also doesnt have reliability issues with the same CVT for said reasons. A good way to compare true reliability of the CVT is go on Versa, Spark, and Mirage forums. Night and day difference between the sites in terms of bitching about failures. The Mirage wins out easily on MirageForum.com Mitsubishi also incorporates in INVECS III ECU/CVT programming system that compared to Nissan's Xtronic system is extremely reliable.
You mentioned the 78 hp isnt enough for the American road. I couldn't disagree more. I uber in my 2014 DE CVT Mirage in a major, high speed metropolitan area. I have no issues maintaing 75+ mph with multiple passengers, AC on, and luggage. The car only weighs 2000lbs. The power to weight ratio is good. Ive put 70k hard Uber miles on it and the car has been fantastic.
The Mirage has been awarded best overall value for pre-owned vehicles, best eco-friendly car, and Mitsubishi has been recognized as the fastest growing Asian manufacturer 2 years in a row, the Mirage has alot to do with that bucking the trend of declining subcompact sales and selling triple plus what was expected each year since 2014.
Sure the Versa and Spark look nicer, better interior, faster, larger dealer network, but they sure as hell won't beat the Mirage in mpg, warranty, and powertrain reliability.
Oh and PS, the stated mpg numbers are completely conservative. I avg 46 mpg COMBINED without even trying in my Mirage, numbers neither the Versa or Spark can touch.
I bought a 2012 Chevrolet Sonic, in large part due to Consumer Reports giving it a "Recommended" rating. It turned out to be one headache after another because of constant repairs (e.g., the transmission had to be replaced because it started slipping at approx. 35,000 miles, the steering linkages were defective, the rear drum brakes were defective, the AC compressor failed at about 80,000 miles, the thermostat was made out of a plastic housing which melted, etc.). I will never buy another GM product in my life.
@@jasonmeadows8510 I hear you on the Chevy Sonic or in actuality a Daewoo Sonic. GM outsourced manufacturering of the Sonic, a world car, to Korea. Now usually thats a good thing, considering reliability has gone up pretty well for Hyundai and KIA, but Daewoo completely failed in the Sonic design. Which sucks because I thought the Sonic was a good looking subcompact. It definitely handles better than my Mirage lol. I just love my little Mitsu because in terms of long term reliability, Mirage owners are really getting a return on their investment. Especially if your working rideshare or delivery. I cant stress enough how wrong many auto crtics are about the Mirage. Whats crazy is if you look up European car critics its the exact opposite with alot of praise. I guess American priorities is just different? Big trucks, gas guzzlers, etc etc.
Mirage is ridiculously overpriced. Reliability isn't the only factor when it comes to value, I'm not paying more to get less. A reliable shitbox is still a shitbox...
@@nodak81 I agree, its all about timing. We got my fiance's 2017 G4 Mirage sedan new for $10,300 out the door price. We waited till the 2018s were about to roll out and swooped down on some killer discounts. Nobody pays MSRP at a Mitsu dealership, unless they're really desperate and I wouldnt even look at one brand new for less than $12k. With that being said, the used market on these is fantastic. We got my 2014 Mirage hatch with only 45k miles on it for $6500. I saw some 2017s with less than 30k miles going for $7k too.
@@nodak81 I paid $12k for a new 2018 G4 with some options like the armrest console, rims, and Android Auto. Sticker for my car is just shy of $18k. No way would I have paid that much then, nor would I now even though I actually love the car. On the forums it also seems, in a blanket statement, nobody pays MSRP/sticker for their new Mirage/G4.
I'd go mirage g4 with manual.
Mirages were known to have worse manual transmissions (for car enthusiasts) Because it uses a linkage and you can’t feel the gears as shifting...
I felt a 2017 mirage g4 shifter when the car was off and it felt absolutely disgusting compared to my miata. That mirage uses a nylon shift cable. Im not sure if they have linkages now or not tho.
I've Test Drive Mirage with manual transmission it doesn't feel slow.... 0-100 can get it in 10.6 seconds ( Which is fast for 78hp + i3, while CVT is around 13-14 seconds )
Good fair review. Drove all 3, 5sps. Nissan was nice, but 3G's over the other 2 in price. So it was out.
Mitu was a little more roomier on cargo. In Pittsburgh, nothing but hills, it was a dog. Worse than expected. Felt cheap put together. Did not handle great
Spark decent on power & handled great. Its like a street legal gocart. Its fun to drive rolling thru the gears.

He is very biased about the nissan and doesn't even give the mirage a chance. I have the 2017 mirage and would only trade it in for a new mirage.
Nissans are now notorious for having some really terrible CVT reliability issues. I hope that the latest ones are better quality.

Hatchback. You'll have more space. I own two of them . Their playground is the northern Norwegian mountains. No problems with steep grades in the winter. Proper tires speak volumes on any vehicle . These small engines have plenty of tourqe. Surprisingly high redline. Sweet spot of reliable balance. Noisy little buggers, but mechanical inclined individuals appreciate the direct audible report, and feedback.

Mitsubishi will give you a deep discount to buy a mirage. I just bought a 2019 (last new one my dealer had) for 11k. The MSRP may be similar, but it’s functionally cheaper than the others.
Thats a great deal. Its a solid shitbox that will serve you well but beware OEM parts are pricey and don't feel like you have to stick with those expensive LLR 165 65 r14 tires after your first set goes bald. I went up to 175 65 r14 tire size because there are a lot more options for cheap.

I rented a Versa. The driver seat was really hard on my back.
I love spark for its versatility and affordability, but 5:36, that's what scares the bejesus out of me - rear end collision. Cuz honestly if someone is sitting on the rear seat there's not much protection, cuz the rear hatch is right behind the seat...
It seems to me that the 2020 Nissan Versa is just a saloon (sedan) version of the 2018 Nissan Micra we get here in europe

I'm at 160,000 with a 2014 mirage std. Only issue was the ac compressor went out at about 130,000.
CVT- first you need to do is change the CVT fluids every 80k kilometer. Change also the filter gear of CVT. No problem
I heard it's very expensive to do bc you have to find a certified CVT technician, not every mechanic knows how to work on cvt's.

@@kylemas2005 I've owned 4 CR top picks-all used mind you-2 Corollas, a Vibe and a Matrix. Had problems with all of them. Over a year and 31,000 miles in on my G4 w/cvt and zero, I mean ZERO issues. I know the CR Suzuki Samurai debacle is VERY old news, but I just found out about a month ago they essentially rigged the test so the Samurai would fail. CR has lost any and all credibility with me now.
@@duster497 My wife has a 2017 ES G4 CVT Mirage. We love it. My Mirage hatch is more versatile but the G4 is more comfortable and has better sight lines.
The mirage isn’t even slow... yes it’s slow compared to a mustang, or a Camry, you can easily get up to 70mph and it feels very nice at that speed. Yeah it takes 15 seconds but people drove beetles around that couldn’t even get up to 70mph without buzzing the engine out and snap over steering into a tree. Or under a semi truck.
I have a 2016 Spark, but don't drive it in the snow. If you do have snow tires, all-season tires are the same as summer tires.

I chose the 2021 Versa, I liked the other 2 including the Rio but, the Versa SR had everything I wanted, and was the most Comfortable. Also they are sharing parts between the 3, and Nissan is the owner (parent company) of Mitsubishi and Jatco.
Nissan, for now, owns controlling shares of Mitsubishi Motors @ 37%.
Mitsubishi Corp., the real parent company, owns 63% shares. Mitsu Corp. includes Mitsubishi Motors, Heavy Industries, Electric, Shipping, Mining, and Banking. They're independent of each other but also heavily invested in each other. This is the Keirestu (Mega Corporation style) format for Mitsubishi.

Just bought a 2019 G4 with CVT at 80K miles and it has been consistently getting 51 and 52 mpg and I bought it to deliver pizza and get 36 mpg when I am doing that.
Trying to get a 2022 Chevy spark ls here in 2022. Impossible had to order one direct from GM. Thankfully it’s the cheapest new car out there right now.
I bought my little sparky a year ago , mine is LTZ + , 1.4 engine and I must say that I was very surprised in a good way , especially with the fuel ⛽️ i was driving like 190 miles and I was surprised to see that I still had half tank of fuel , even my dad was , does she eat fuel or she just smell it 🤣😂, my speed was between 55 miles to 70 , and yeah I was surprised, sparky is a small car like we all knows but believe me she’s full of surprises in a good way , this car is perfect for single/couple maybe even for a small family . But dam I love it 🥰😻

And the Misubishi got a worse rating than the rest in MPG, while it actually got higher MPG!
I like one of those cars as a rental for when I take a trip to any of those states. Because Mini Cooper is my life!

Warning, I am admittedly a bit of a Chevy guy, but what I say to say is accurate. I think MSRP aside, real world prices makes the Chevy thousands less than the other two, especially than the Nissan where new styling keeps them from offering even modestly good deals on that car. For the real world price of a Versa I could get a Chevy Trax and beat the Versa in any category.
Agreed, incentives reduce the price in a huge way. People have been saying that about the Mirage as well though, and it depends on the region of the country you're in as well! Checking in with local dealers is a smart choice.
What about the Toyota Yaris?

@@Allcarseveryday Nobody is paying MSRP at Mitsu dealerships with rebates and discounts. We got 2 in our house, both CVT, one a 2014 de hatch and a 2017 G4 sedan varient. The G4 was bought OTD for $10k. The hatch bought used under 45k miles for $6500. Both good deals for a good value. These cars are workhorses. Simple to work on and cheap to maintain.
Very true, I just can’t compare rebates and discounts because that varies dealer to dealer so I use MSRP.

Good video as I have studied all 3 cars. I don't trust either one as reliable. But I hear the Mitsubishi may be the winner in terms of engine access and that 5/60k bumper to bumper and the 100k/10yr powertrain- roadside too for 5yrs. The warranty itself is a value that needs consideration. Nissan is in a big lawsuit now with those CVT things.
Mitsubishi utilizes the exact same JATCO CVT7 as Nissan, but dont worry. Mitsubishi actually knows how to program a CVT unlike Nissan it seems. Love love love my Mirage for Ubering. My fiance has the G4 sedan verision too.

All two are actually interesting (4 cyl engines) in Manual Transmission, Auto is bad for all of them, but Mitsu have 3 cyl lawnmower engine....

I own a new base model Spark with a manual and your analysis is spot on (I LOVE the car...especially for the $10,300 OTD price). The Spark is more or less a Daewoo (GM Korea) and in recent years Korean cars rival the Japanese in terms of quality and reliability. The new Versa is very stylish and packed with features but Nissan's quality and reliability as a company has been spotty at best...I just couldn't pull the trigger on the Versa because of Nisan's spotty history. Finally, the Mirage is a turd. I test drove one and the driving dynamics were abysmal...felt like an early 80's econo-crate...you were far too kind...lol.

I want a commute car for a rural area with speed limits from 45-65; 58-mile round trip; sparse traffic: manual transmission, cheap, and will last and good mpg. If an electric was half its price and someone built me a garage for free, I'd go electric. Otherwise, it's Mirage ES 5-spd all the way. I wish only that it had a higher top gear for hwy cruising.

Yea but not everyone knows how to drive manual, my friend tried learning manual and he failed his driving test 3 times before switching to auto, which made his life 10 times easier and he passed on the first try.

Given that the Versa is a brand new redesign for 2020, it's most likely the best driving. It certainly has the nicest design currently. Given my experience with the previous generation Versa and my knowledge of how awful Nissan's CVT reliability is, I'd be really leery to buy that new Versa. Especially a first year model. Mirage is grotesquely overpriced if you pay anywhere near MSRP. If you can get one for $8k-$12k after discounts, which used to be possible, I'd play it safe and go with that car. My 2014 Mirage was well-built and dependable.

I bought a 2018 Versa note brand new. It has only been 5 years and I have been more times to the shop than I would like to. I haven’t had a problem with the CVT. But I’m not taking any chances. My powertrain warranty has expired, and I’m trading this car soon. I would like to trade for a Mirage (small cars are a must where I live) but correct me if I’m wrong, don’t they use the same Jatco CVTs as the Nissans?
However, I read mostly positive reviews for the Mirages. I’ve also read that Mitsubishi liquid cools the cvt whereas Nissan does not. Is this true?

I'd like to see this revisited with the features of the BASE models of all three - with manual transmission. You're comparing based on features of the top trim models (infotainment, etc) but then talk about things like time to recover cost of CVTs based on fuel economy with manual transmissions ... where several of the interior features are very different than what is depicted and reviewed.
Nobody ever seems to talk about base model vehicles or manual transmissions. Probably because manufacturers really don't want people talking about them ...
Reviewing dealer cars makes it so that I am subject to dealer availability. Even though the interiors pictured might all have the optional CVT and some additional features, the statistics I was looking at were the true base models of each car. Features that I talked about are what is standard on the most stripped out version of each car--it's truly the base versions. The only thing I mentioned that isn't the very base model was in the MPG category where I talked about how it probably isn't worth it to splurge on the CVT's. I would have exclusively shown manuals if they even had one on the lot!
@@Allcarseveryday totally get it. I'm sure that makes it really hard, since dealers NEVER bring in base models. On the flip side, it can lead shoppers looking at reviews to expect things they won't actually get at the base price.

i sat in all three today at a car show. 2020 nissan versa is all new, and far ahead of the mitsu mirage and chevy spark for comfort and room.
The Mistubishi is dated and doesn't have the advanced safety features - pre-collision system with automatic braking and pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise control, lane-keeping and lane departure alert which the others offer, but Chevy only offers into on the highest trim - 2TL
It shouldnt be compared now though because its no longer a true subcompact like the Mirage or Spark but a compact. Also the rear legroom in the Mirage is actually not bad. Uber and Lyft will allow you to drive a Mirage but not a Spark because of that and the 3rd back seatbelt.
