I enjoyed the costing exercise. When I was DLO Accountant, we did a similar exercise on elec cables and copper piping. The company you mentioned wasn't about then, but we found a local scrappie who was willing to collect. Saved the wages for two operatives and the on-costs for a van; had we done a straight tender exercise and taken the bottom line, we would have lost money. You explained the concept and process really well.
This is such a fantastic concept. It's awesome to hear of a company that does this. The price with what you get really surprised me too! Great job NB & GC!
That is fantastic idea I am apprentice but I could gather small cut offs on jobs , since I do sweep them up (believe it or not I use brush) 😂 hope it comes to Ireland
Thanks for your generosity. I thought your give away was just going to be for this video. I'm not even a sparky but i can appreciate the gesture to the others😂
Hi Nick - when you calculated the costs I think you only included the journey to the scrap yard and the time there but not the journey home so the time and fuel costs would be even slightly higher so an even better deal
Mind are a great charity... used to do voluntary work for them. Mental health should not be a taboo subject. You lost your dad, and i can tell it still gets to you, lost mine at 8... still on antidepressants. Fair play nick. HOWEVER, why is my van full of flexicon? (no for real, i use it a lot under floors for cat 6, kidding mate)
Does the work with like power kettle leads etc ? I work for a company that does equipment racks that we normally use IEC to IEC power leads. As well as data, armoured power and date etc. we currently get this collected with a WEE waste bins and I think would be a good idea for use as a company to get some excess money back that we wouldn’t normally get
Yep! We buy all types of copper cable, including those with plugs/attachments on. If you cut them off, then the cable is worth 3 times the value 👍 A lot of companies are approaching us with the desire to begin cashing in on their scrap cable, instead of letting it go for free, or in same cases - pay for it to be skipped away!
@@GreencableTeam Thank you! company is in Scotland so I will speak with those people a little higher up and ask the question especially since your aren't available up here yet. Thanks NICK!
I watched this on Adam's channel and I did wonder if you got more if you went to the local scrap dealer but you proved the point with the comparison unless you are very near one I think it would be worth it with the T & E etc. Does the price fluctuate with copper prices?
It's definitely worth it for convenience, but for someone like, for example, my brother in law or that guy who has half a tonne collected that 10-15% would add up very quickly
@@Pugjamin agreed, but for example my brother in law is a scrap man (he drives around collecting it) so his monthly loads definitely add up. When I did it myself we'd weigh in the steel daily and then the non ferrous metals monthly and we regularly had a couple of tonnes. The monthly weigh ins sometimes hit £10k+ so if you think about it, £40 ish per £200 is £800 lost for what was basically a full day of back and forth to the scrap yard
Absolutely, it's all about economies of scale. However, the more material you have, the more time, effort and resource it'll take to handle it. Our customer with 500kg per time would have to take at least half a day to ferry that to the local scrap yard, in their own vehicles - which would have to be cleared out etc. They're simply too busy with better paying work to have to do that so Greencable is the best solution. Important to note that in many regions we cover, we pay the same as regional yards - and sometimes more.
@@GreencableTeam I do agree that for a lot of businesses, it would make sense. For those in the scrap industry, though, probably not. There are a lot of actual scrappers I know, though, that wouldn't benefit from it, especially if they weigh other metals like steel in at the same time. Plus, I know a few guys who go mental if their money isn't in immediately, lol. It's definitely a great business, though. I genuinely hope more people use your services 😀
The 25mm you was talking about its be weighed in as singles if you was to strip all your twin and earth you would earn a lot more because you would get the the earth which is bare bright and the brown and blue would be singles

They should fit a lock to the bin, do they pay by cash if not paying to your back account means you'll get stung for income tax 😮 I'd stick to the normal scrap yard
@heffo1992 it's mostly to stop thieves i think(along with photo Id being required). It's not being "stung" for income tax. It's income like any other and is therefore taxed accordingly.
Customers are welcome to install locks on their bins if they wish, however most don't need to as they're stored in a safe place at all times. And a lock won't deter someone from stealing the entire bin, by wheeling it away. It is illegal for anyone to buy scrap metal using cash - The Scrap Metal Dealers Act (SMDA) 2013

Dont get as much as the scrapyard but worth it in my opinion for the convenience
