Stickerbrush Symphony - Donkey Kong Country 2 | Jazz Cover

- I covered this theme back during the Summer of Covers, but I felt that with my new arranging capabilities and newfound love for 7/8 time, I should re-do this theme! Needless to say, I'm super glad I did.
The pseudo-rubato intro to this song is quite lovely, and the harmonies produced by mixing the electric keys, bowed bass, and saxophone with delay effects create this awesome ethereal atmosphere that sets a sweet mood for this whole tune!
Then, the song breaks into a delicious 7/8 section with a modern groove going on in the rhyhtm section, while the keyboard instruments go at it with closely-voiced harmonies and rhyhtmic comping. Some time signature changes occur throughout the melody, which change up the feel very slightly.
Afterwards, we hit the swing section, featuring a tenor solo. Both the electric keys and piano are comping at this point, a "creative decision" that I don't think detracts too much from the overall theme of this section. Then, the 7/8 returns to take the melody out, leading into a sparse fade by the rhythm section and saxophone.
Enjoy!

This number of views is a crime.
+gui874111 You can always help by sharing my videos around! :)
+insaneintherainmusic I share them with everyone I know.
agreed
101k isn't too bad
Been lurking on your arrangements for awhile and one thing I've always respected from musicians that you do well is that when you arrange something you don't just take the melody and put it to some new chords or whatever, but you create something that is your own using the theme of the original idea. Also your general tonality and production values are both really good even on your old videos, which I respect. Keep it up my man, I've always wanted to be better at arranging myself, but my specialty is mostly in improv, not actually building an idea into a full composition.
Thanks! I think a really good cover is one that takes a lot of elements from the original but also takes in a lot of creativity on the artist's part!
you could cover this a dozen times and i don't think I'd ever get sick of it. stickerbrush is a fucking timeless piece that seeps into your soul.
It's an amazing tune. I actually got to play it in front of David Wise the other day with my friend's band... it was a sick experience.
insaneintherainmusic That's like a dream come true for you :D
insaneintherainmusic YOUR BAND MET DAVID WISE??
HOW??
This brought tears to my eyes around 2:30. Thanks for the unique and beautiful rendition.
Landon Graham Glad that you liked it :)

Awwwww yeeeeah! I will forever put this on when I bring a girl into my room. Great job budday!

I've heard this theme rearranged in 3/4 before, but never in... whatever was going on here! Bouncing from 7/4 to 9/4, it sounded like. Whatever it was, it was excellent, haha. Really good stuff.
"hi my name's insaneintherain. By day I'm just your average Baskin Robbins worker. But by night. I am video game jazz artist extraordinaire"
Haha all jokes my dude. Love every piece of work you put out
THIS IS GLORIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THE INTRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You've made MANY millenials happy with the covers! ::Continues grading papers::
+René Aché Thank you so much
Buddy I know I’m 6 years late to the party but this is one of the best things I’ve ever stumbled upon on YT. On par with the day I discovered Ronald Jenkees. Thank you for being a musician and letting this out of your head and into our ears and minds.
Great cover!
Yeah
As a person who has been learning music theory, guitar playing and so many other things for about three years, it is just astounding to see a virtuoso such as yourself.
I'm not even close to your level xD
Keep up the good work, and I hope to see more of your covers in the future. In fact, I hope that in the far future, I'll get to see you play along with a famous jazz band!
Just the absolute best I'd expect from ya.
Welp I think I just found my new fave cover from you Carlos. Absolutely incredible as per usual from you.
Thanks a ton, Noe!
Na thank you man. Terrific spin on this classic track.
There's something about your style that reminds me of Pat Metheny
Came here from your new trailer!
Stickerbush is probably one of my favorite video game songs
Glad you checked out the video! The whole Stickerbrush / Stickerbush naming convention mishaps always throw me off....
insaneintherainmusic Same! Just realized I said stickerbush lol
Could you do Alpine Incline from Tropical Freeze? Basically the modern day Stickerbrush
This is amazing. You managed to smoothify this theme while maintaining it's sense of magic and danger. Great work!
+Medikor Glad you liked it!
starts out with a Brian Blade/Coltrane feel and transitions into a smooth Brubeck feel. I am continually impressed, brother. Keep up the great work!
Throughout the whole thing, I was waiting for the tropical freeze end credits version to kick in.
Piano parts reminded me of chick corea
raniely candelario Now THERE'S a compliment
You´re a reason to adorate jazz music and video games. Greetings from Chiapas, Mexico.
Seriously, how the hell do you do this? Your arrangements are amazing!! Then you play reaaaally good! You've a fantastic taste and musicality. Great job as always.
Holy shit this was so good. Keeping that intro together and coherent was pretty amazing and I love me some electric piano 8D great job dude!
Thanks, you guys! If you noticed, I incorporated some sporadic bits of the melody in the intro in the keys, piano, and saxophone, which help keep it together a bit more :)
Awesome interpretation! And mad props for not transposing!
Jacob Trcalek Thanks a ton!
I've watched you Bramble Blast video about 100 times but didn't know you took on the OG!
Aquatic ambience gets all the attention but I've always preached this being the best DKC song.
Thanks!
Dude, this arrangement is spectacular!! So ethereal and also catchy; I love how you incorporate different styles and time signatures and flip between straight and swing. Fantastic playing, and incredibly creative work! I'm beyond impressed!
one of the best covers of this I have ever heard
This is a gorgeous rendition ona classic my friend. Good fucking work buddy!
Making fantastic covers even at this young age... How will I ever reach Carlos’ level?!
Practice probably.
I'm like "Hey, what's up? Hello"
Seen yo pretty ass soon as you came in the door
I just wanna chill, got a sack for us to roll

New to the channel, but I'm loving everything. I love your takes on every piece you arrange. Keep doing what you're doing, my dude.
Holy swear words......one of my favorite game songs and you made it sexy and jazzy....knocking it out of the park!!
Que demais! Parabéns pelo trabalho, gostei bastante ^^
Another masterpiece of an arrangement in addition to all your others. Incredible.
Do you think you'll ever be able to play jungle hijinx? The bass part is killer. or maybe that mineshaft song in dkcr with the moles
This sounds like FF XIII was your inspiration :D Good job dude!
I fucking love you
I demand jazz cover of Great Mighty Poo!...though this is amazing! :D
Dayum, judging by this and your chronotrigger video I'd say your skills in the smooth grooves are better now
You really don't know how much I love this. Thank you so much for an incredible cover! T_T
I can't say I'm educated enough in music writing (or jazz covers, in this case) to say why, specifically, but it sounds bloody fantastic.
You don't have to be an artist to appreciate art :)
There are pieces of Jan Garbarek in that cover, love it!
Thank you so much for introducing me to this artist, his music is SUPER COOL
re-discovered this cover again, would love for you to put this up on spotify
Simplemente increible, haz ganado un suscriptor
everytime i listen to it, the sun is rising in my heart :)
Same here! It's awesome.
dode advertise your page more asshole this music is beautiful, and needs more recognition
the intro is incredible, I mean the entire thing is but that intro, its im a detective on a rainy city day but in the year 2400
This is beautiful man
So... nine people (at the time of this comment) are deaf?
What a marvelous and unique interpretation of this song! The instruments you chose blend together so, so well. And that soloing at about 4 minutes in is just awesome. Thank you for sharing this with us!
+Charlie Wells No problem, thanks for listening :)
Seriously, how the hell do you do this? Your arrangements are amazing!! Then you play reaaaally good! You've a fantastic taste and musicality. Great job as always.
Well guys, it's time to tell my story.
I've been living in the city for about a year now, with my uncle, DK. You see, I moved here with him ever since the, well, uh, incident. I make it through the day rapping in the streets of New Donk City. There's something weird going on here. A gang known as the Crocs kidnapped uncle DK. Today marks the beginning of my journey to save him. The journey of Diddy.
DUDE!I don't usually comment on UA-cam videos but.... wow. I just wanted to let you know how utterly outstanding that was. Keep up the amazing work.
Keith Seratt Ayyy I pulled a comment out of a lurker! Thanks for the compliments man :)
lol you are most welcome
Holy crap this is phenomenal! The opening is so soothing
My god can you both marry me please? ;-;
"Both"? :o
insaneintherainmusic Yes :3
It's the same guy on both instruments, i think. xD
One of the best tracks ever for a videogame, beautifully rendered.
Normally I don't write comment on videos... But wait !
A very original and talented interpretation of one of the best original soundtrack's video game.
This man needs more views !
+Matthias Gaber share it with your friends if you enjoyed it then, glad you enjoyed my interpretation of this wonderful tune :)
Wow, you are reeeeally good, man. You deserve so many more subs and views. Great, creative cover of an excellent piece of game music. The world could always do with more jazz. :)
Ever since I heard the end credits of Tropical Freeze, I thought a full saxophone version of Stickerbrush Symphony would be amazing. Well, now I know it to be true.
Amazing work, dude.
This makes me want try to relearn trumpet
Please make a version gives bayou boogie
The intro is made of magical majestic echoing dreamsssss. I really like the timing too--and overall I just love your treatment of my favorite song ever!
Your covers of it inspired me to make a version of my own! And thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Oh wow- cool thanks! and np- your covers are always top notch :>
This is absolutely incredible. Personally, I think the nature of Jazz is not the best pairing with this song in particular (wind ensemble, or full orchestral band would be my way to go) but that is honestly a nit pick at best. Keep it up dude!!
+Rob George Thanks dude! I could see a really interesting version of this by mixing a jazz combo and a full orchestra... like Snarky Puppy and the Metropol Orkest.
insaneintherainmusic That is something I can totally get down with.
Dude, this is brilliant. Very rich. Perfectly reflects the nostalgic feeling of playing a beloved childhood game.
I need like, a twelve minute version of this.
I wonder if you would ever return to this and do another version.
I love your jazz compositions so much.
very interesting and great cover, wow! DKC2 soundtrack is so inspiring...
I would BRUSH off the dust of my DKC 2 game, but I sadly do not have one.
I still come back to all of your older videos. A majority of them never get old. :3
is this in 7/4 time?
Yep, 7/4!
gotta love those uncommon time signatures, 7/4 and 5/4 are cool
Amazing. I'll get so excited every time I see one of your videos pop up in my sub box!
stickerbush symphony is my beating heart, i love this!
This is so awesome!
One of your best.
Good cover :D
WOW!
I loved the music, by far the best cover on Stickerbush Symphony but GAH! It's StickerBUSH not Stickerbrush! It is such a common mistake the even Google recognizes it wrong! Stickerbush is a plant and Stickerbrush isnt even a thing
+Jordan Leung Never knew that! I just tried doing some research on that topic. There's no Donkey Kong Country 2 official original soundtrack as far as I can tell, so I don't have anything to prove or deny the "Stickerbush Conspiracy"
Well, it is a common mistake after all. If you have sm4sh, take a look at the music gallery and you'll know. :)
+Jordan Leung Well, that confirms it. Wow, my life has been... a lie.
Well, I was surprised when I first knew that it was Stickerbush too! XD
absolute banger

yo so when im in a certain mood, I feel like I have to listen to a certain type of melody or music, something that vibes with me. i was a little hesitant to look at a jazz cover but i said "what the heck, why not just go for it!" and now Im here and I loved it!!! it was sooooo great and I cant wait to check out the other covers.... but i need to vibe out to this video a bunch more times because i like it so much LMAO!!!
+02superspeed yooooo welcome! there's more good stuff on here.
Awesome!
Very good
So usually it's nice to see well thought-out comments on youtube videos, but all that can be said is
