He's not actually defending the film itself, but rather people's right to see it.

I have a similar feeling to those who try and ban violent video games.

Ballard was fond of the subject that the modern world causes mankind to disassociate themselves from one another. Cronenberg is fond of that theme too, that's what Videodrome is about, men who associate more with screens that with one another. To suggest a trite video game falls under the same heading as a work associated with artists like Ballard and Cronenberg is, respectfully, childish.

David Lean Still, censorship is bad under most guises, isn't it?

Mr. Veteran technically,no one wants to be told they are not smart enough to choose for themselves, but I fear that some creative works are made solely to lower the tone, although it is probably clear enough who makes the good works and who doesn't. Personally though, I don't think video games, however well made they are, however well rendered the images are, are 'art', but that's me.

David Lean I agree with you. For example, I think a film like Natural Born Killers is reprehensible as it advocates a life of crime and attacking authority, but that doesn't mean I would support banning it. I also think video games are art, as it is expressing someone's idea creatively (the definition of art), but not many of them are high art, as in they can't be analysed in deep detail.

Mr. Veteran that's not a great example, with respect. I'd tend to give Oliver Stone the benefit of the doubt and I think it does have things to say, not about the killers themselves, but the medias pursuit of them. I'm talking more about a gore/slasher movie, for example. Those have flimsy sub text and like porn movies are just to push some base buttons in our minds. In any case, Croenberg is highly moral film maker. Is clear as day he has nothing but the best of intentions for humanity. His films serve as a warning, especially movies like Crash. Speaking of things Ballard...High Rise is out next year!!

"Crash" is one of Cronenberg's most perfect films.
    I'd put "Dead Ringers" alongside.

Hardline 18-cert that some outlets said should be banned and the fact that it’s NC-17 in the U.S. means this film was really...EXTREME for a mainstream audience but trust me CRASH 1996 doesn’t compare to something like ANTICHRIST, HUMAN CENTIPEDE, or that Eastern European film that’s so graphic it was banned in Norway and NZ!
