ATTENTION:
DO NOT FORGET TO RECONNECT THE EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLE LEVER!!!
The video doesn't say anything about this, so without even thinking about it, I reassembled just as I disassembled. This lead to the exterior door handle not working. Also, make sure that after putting the cables back in their respective homes that you fasten the boot down onto the plastic. If you don't do this, it the inside handle will not work. Forgetting the exterior lever and forgetting to place one of those boots onto the plastic will result you in not being able to open your door from the inside or the outside.
Hope this helps some of you down the road. I had a hell of a time as both scenarios happened to me. I didn't realize the lever was there on the exterior handle as it's not mentioned in the video and I forgot to place ONE SIDE of the interior door cable boot onto the plastic. Yeah, it was fun... Dude, lol that same thing happened to me I shot the whole video, and started putting away all the video equipment when I came back to test the door it wasn’t working and I didn’t figure it out until I took apart the whole door. I thought it was because I wasn’t paying attention because I was focusing on shooting the video as well. I even thought to myself to bring back the camera gear and audio gear to include that portion but thought to myself nobodies going to miss that step like me 🤦♂️ my bad. @@chrisbell9723 so I'm stuck because I forgot I to check the assembly before I reattached it. The door is closed and neither the cables or the lever will unlatch the door. What did you do to get it to unlatch? Thanks.
What exactly are you calling the "boot"? I made sure all cables were attached at both ends but still cannot get exterior handle to work. I feel like I can't get the large silver piece (that you screw the torx screws into) to seat properly when I re-installed it. Maybe it's not sitting right and not allowing the exterior handle to work? Idk. How did yours fit back in? I had a gap right next to the yellow piece, which I did not feel was right. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Do not re-install the door assembly onto the door without testing it first as in that video. Hopefully it helps.
👍Tips to help: If you are replacing the driver’s door actuator with a key bolt (where you inset your key to lock/unlock manually), First step remove the plastic plug on the rear edge of the door and loosen the Torx bolt (the bolt is captive and won’t fall out). Then pull out the key bolt. Doing so will make it easy and ensure proper alignment of the key bolt back into the door lock actuator as a final step to the install. Also: If you have difficulty reattaching the door panel to the door, which can be a challenge, remove the 4 (or 5), attachment clips located across the TOP edge of the panel and secure them onto the door itself. Doing this allows for easy attachment and the door panel to push straight in to secure.

Hahaha So when I originally designed and made this workbench I was supposed to have a thin sheet of plywood that would be removable as a top. but that “fell through” because I didn’t have a good place to store it. 🤦♂️. my new idea is to find a large mouse pad that will cover most of the working area which I think would be perfect. oh and I have dropped a lot of stuff in those holes but I still haven’t learned my lesson because I don’t have a large mouse pad yet 🤣.

Wow. Thank you so much. My wife's drivers door stopped working about a month ago and the passenger just stopped a few days ago. I bought the motors and did both doors in just about an hour. The wife wanted me to take it to the dealership, but they quoted me $1200 for both doors. So you saved me $1190!

Same to me wow these cars are brand and new and they have a problems with the doors and my stereo it’s glitching the brakes are replaced for 1800 you know something about saving money on service ?
2014 Limited, same issue. Followed your vid. Couldn’t find a motor locally so I decided to pull the motor apart and clean it up. (2 channel locks is all you need to pull the cap off the motor casing)
Fine grit sandpaper on the commutator and q-tip/alcohol on the brushes and she was good as new-ish.
All in it took me about an hour.

I followed this but forgot to connect the exterior door handle and had to remove the panel again. Putting the door panel back on was the most difficult to me for some reason. I also opted to clean the small motor rather than buy one due to time crunch. It worked ! Thanks for the video. Fixed spending no money.

For the record, if you go to lock it with the key fob and it doesn't beep, one of your doors didn't lock
So, to get this straight, your car door would not unlock/lock with the key fob electronically, BUT if you lock/unlock manually by flipping the door lock mechanism that is by the inside door handle, you were able to unlock/lock manually, right? Only my passenger door is doing this. Thanks for the video sir

Great Video. I like your mannerism and your attitude. You don't come off as arrogant or a know-it-all but you explain everything in a complete and understandable way. THANX. I have two third generation 4 runners. The older one was running at night and it locked me out before daylight this morning. I got creative and I was able to get in but if this happened to my wife...Anyhow, just now, I made sure it all doors were unlocked and within 5 minutes it just locked all the doors. This was with the engine off, in park and with me standing outside the vehicle. It is a 97 model and there is no key fob. I just want to completely disable the automatic lock system. I don't need it and I NEVER lock the vehicle. If someone wants in, I make it easy because I don't want them breaking a window to find out I have nothing of value.
This is the silliest repair I've done to date. I'm assuming the outer handles get installed AFTER this mechanism does at the factory. That would make it easier to get the linkages (lock tumbler AND handle) engaged into the assembly for sure!!

Excellent video. I may have been able to fix it without the video but this made it so much easier. I probably would have just replaced the whole module for $125, because I wouldn't have known about the motors on Amazon. You saved me $112 so far. I bought a 2 pack of motors.

@@nazaiturbide9351 I haven't had that one apart. I suspect it would be similar. It may have a different length of travel if the windows are different heights. They probably use the same motors.

I actually had to watch two separate videos for this project. One to make sure that I was taking the door off correctly and the other video was yours, to make sure I took apart the accuator properly. I do have 1 recommendation about the video. When you are putting the accuator back together, it is hard to see the positioning of the level that you state to have in the up position. The lighting is a little dark and that part of the video was quick. I was trying to see the position and everything however the difference was that I was replacing the passenger side door and everything was flipped. I put everything back together and the only thing that doesn't work is the exterior door handle. I can open the door from the inside but not the outside. Nevertheless, the door locks and unlocks with the key fob. Anyone have any suggestions about what I did wrong? I appreciate the video tremendously!! It save me lots of money. The motors were 2 for $10.00 on Amazon!!

I see the problem on the motor shaft, it is loose into the hole of the helicoidal gear, it slips when the actuator is activated, is that correct? I have the same problem with my hyundai elantra. Greetings from Mexico.

I performed this repair (driver door would not lock/unlock remotely), the part in the description is still good. They only problem I think I’m having is that the door will not unlock and open from the inside with the handle (safety feature if locked inside the car, front doors should open from the handle mechanically). I guess something is not lined up internally but everything else works.
EDIT: Took it back apart, when putting the cover back onto the actuator (after replacing the little motor) that I did not ensure that a plastic guide did not go back into the center channel. Also, forgot to ensure the key way for the outside door handle was not mated correctly (could not unlock door with the key). Make sure you do an operational check on the entire door before and after the repair!!!

No way, The more I looked into it the more I noticed how common it was which kind of sucks but luckily it’s not that expensive to fix.
I have the same issue with my 2004 4Runner. I can open the door, with the key but I cannot lock the door with my keys and when put the key in the ignition the car alarm goes off.

I am having this issue and took it to our family mechanic and he told me that out of all the things I had to get repaired he highly recommended that I get genuine Toyota actuators because any off brand actuator might malfunction and damage the computer. Then it would cost me more money to repair the actuators again and reset the computer. Would changing the motor affect the interiority of the actuator?
To be completely honest I have no idea I’m not a professional but I did a lot of research before making this video and it seems like a lot of people are doing the exact same thing. I haven’t had any issues with mine and nobody has really complaint about this modification so I’m not sure that the mechanic is 100% right but I would just use your best judgment. 🤷♂️
My 2012 4runner will not unlock or lock via the fob with the car turned off (1 out of 10 times it will) To unlock doors, I have to have the car on or use the fob key after I manually looked the door(s). Is this an actuator issue? Same is for the back lift gate, when the car is off- door is locked and I must turn car on to open on the electronic handle. Thoughts?
So this is my wife’s car so I can’t tell you the exact symptoms of what happened before they completely failed but it honestly sounds like that’s your problem as well.
When I put out this video I didn’t think that this was a really common problem but a lot of people have reached out saying that they’re having the same issues as well.

Great vid TR4R! I don't see your link to Amazon for the module/motor part number. Also, FYI, I learned on my wife's 2014 4Runner Limited that if the driver's door lock isn't engaging when commanded, you will hear the other locks engage but won't get the conformation beep and the lights won't flash.

Yep, same thing with my 2014 Trail. The doors will lock but won't beep meaning that one of the doors is not locked. I've narrowed it down to the rear passenger door not working properly. I'm going to take the actuator apart and see if this motor replacement will fix it. Thank you Trail Ready 4Runner for posting this video.
Nice video but can you show the hardest part, which reinstalling the latch mechanism. the door handle lever and the cable for the power lock was the hardest thing to do! LOL. In any case, nice work.
Also let viewers know that when the door lock actuator on the driver side door when u go to lock the truck with the lock keypad the truck will lock all doors except the drivers door and also u will not hear the alarm chirp 1 time when hitting the lock button on the key. This is how u know how u have a problem or malfunction with driver door not locking....

What were the full symptoms of this problem? Want to verify I have the same issue. Was your door failing to lock and unlock with the fob, or just lock?
You've probably dealt with this by now, but this is a repair for just when the fob stops locking and unlocking. The manual key in the lock should still work if you have the same problem as this video. I replaced the motors in both my doors today and it took about an hour.

Ok, here is my situation with 2011 4Runner SR5 front door locks. It started with the front passenger side door lock. One day a few months back, it just stopped working, locking and unlocking when using the alarm and still not working. Then, a few weeks after the driver side door lock stopped working just like the passenger side. BUT, the only difference is that the driver side door lock will start working again randomly, and works fine for maybe a couple of days, maybe a week the most, then it stops working again for weeks, and it randomly stops working again, just like now today, which made me look into it and found this video. How come this is happening? Why is it that the driver side it works on and off, and the passenger side has not worked at all since it stopped working a few months ago? I've had my 2011 4Runner since Jan 2014 and this has never happened. The other issue I've been having maybe more often since the past couple of years, is that all door windows sometimes, actually very frequently, almost everytime, when I press the button to make the window go up, and the window start going up, it automatically begins to come down before it even closes, and a lot of times it does this almost simultaneously or almost right away after I press the button to close the window😡😡😡 sometimes you want or need to close the window fast for whatever reason, and instead of closing it goes up just a bit and it right away starts opening going down half or completely, and sometimes u press the button right away because I want it close and it does it again and again, either goes almost to be closed but never reaches and windows automatically comes down again, or right after pressing the button it starts to go up but but in less than a second, just like that it switches to go down all the way😡😡😡, and it's very annoying and frustrating something with the sunroof. And I've looked at the manual and there's actually a section that explains how to reset the windows and sunroof which I've done, and it works, but not for long, sometimes it works for a few hours and then when I try to close a window it starts again. Do you think I have some electrical problems/malfunction? Is this something common with 4Runners, does anyone knows a solution to these 2 problems without having to go to a Toyota dealer or a mechanic?? Thank you for any advice, suggestion, etc..and sorry for the long message. But I have become very frustrated with these 2 issues now. Also, lol, a couple of days ago the driver side button for the driver side window some how it broke when I pushed it once to have it open all the way down with just one quick touch as usual, but it simply broke! Lol. First time ever. So its "loose" now, kinda like sunken in I guess. If I try to pull it which is to make the window go up, it seems and sound like it still works to make the window go up because I hear the sound that it usually makes when u press it up and the windows is already closed but it still moves up a little and u hear the noice etc, but I can't open it anymore. I'm a smoker, so it sucks that my driver side window doesn't come down😡😡😡. Can I just buy that piece/button? Ugh.

Also, with the window problem, it really annoys me, it sucks, I park, thinking I put all the windows up, or so i thought, get out and leave. When I come back I can see a window halfway open😡😡😡 it never went all the way up to close because of that issue.
And yes, with the locks, if one is not working you'll know when you press the keychain to lock it you won't hear the 1 "beep" and if the other doors are already locked, once you press the keychain you won't hear any locks, when you should hear the lock sound from whichever door you got out. And also sucks when its raining or u r rushing, carrying stuff, or need to open the door fast etc, and when you think the doors unlocked after pressing the keychain several feet away and u go open, its locked!😡😡😡 and now I have to search my pockets to find my keys to manually insert it and open the door. Sorry. I think that's everything

@@TrailReady4Runner Question....as I'm working on this door issue right now. It seems like when I detach the lock cable from the little door lock switch by the handle (but keep the wiring harness attached) the locking mechanism works everytime. However when I re-attach the cable to the door panel, it fails to lock once every few times I try.

@@TrailReady4Runner Hey bud. Yes it turned out mine was just an issue of the door lock mechanism needing to be cleaned. Cleaned out all the gunk and dust from around the door handle and lock area and it works fine, so far. But next time it happens I'll consider the motor being a possible root cause.

Replaced my actuator and the door locks now but the external handle doesn’t open the door and the key mechanism doesn’t work either. Did I miss reconnecting anything, please help!
It’s probably because you forgot to connect the exterior door lever checked out the pined comment. I forgot to do that my first time.
Rock Auto $123 oem Aisen unit...Amazon motor $8...dealer Aisen part $250-300. My '17 4R drivers side messed up at 49k miles but I will say having the dealer use the techstream software to enable all locks to auto lock every time you put truck in drive or go over certain speed will wear these things out FAST...DONT enable auto locking from dealer only lock em manually when your in a sketch part of town otherwise they will all die premature out of the 36k warranty lol.
A little note for those that might find it helpful: when not all of the doors lock, you won't hear the single beep when you lock with your remote. I thought my remote battery was dying because it didn't beep, but then I quickly realized just one of the doors didn't lock.
I"ll be doing this motor swap today, wish me luck.

I have a 17 Rav 4 and it just stopped locking fobs are fine. If I lock the doors manually and shut the door they will not stay locked. is this the same issue? I can not afford to fix anything right now

Yes this motor is the same. I had an old door lock actuator laying around on my 2005 and I finally got around to busting it open today. It has a generic PAN14 motor just like this one. It is used in a ton of Toyota’s and Lexuses.
I will say though, our generation is harder to disassemble than this one. It’s easy to remove from the car but opening it is hard.
