Sort of a detailed question. Let's say my excess contribution was $250, but the last contribution I made was $500. Would I take the value at close from the day before plus $250 as my beginning value? I can see that excess contributions don't always split evenly if equal monthly contributions are made.

I'm not sure what you mean by split evenly. just follow the worksheet.

@@TravisSickle the math you use works out awfully evenly. If I contribute 100 per month and my excess is 550, then half of one of the 100 dollar contributions is ok to stay while the other half can't. My suspicion is the AOB is the value of the account plus 50. The worksheet doesn't account for this.
