The pollinators LOVE this plant! I've even seen a hummingbird come to it! It does spread easily and grows HUGE. Mine is easily 8 feet wide and 4 feet tall now in its 2nd year. I didn't expect it to grow so large. Thankfully, there was room in the butterfly garden for it.
This is super helpful because based on your review of this shrub last year I bought 4 of them at the garden store. You're right about the bees - they found it right away. The shrubs were in bloom at the time. I was so excited to be able to get them. Now I know how to prune them. We're not quite into spring yet but I'll watch for the buds and leaves to come out. This is a fabulous video. Thanks.
Severe pruning makes these into beautiful shrubs or hedges. Don't throw the cuttings away. Stick hardwood cuttings into the ground or into a pot. No rooting hormone. You'll have all the Bluebeard you ever dreamed of. They sprout from seed in graveled areas and are even considered a weed by some folks. Michael
I keep seeing specs for this plant at 2' high and wide, sometimes to 2.5'. Is this based on how the plant is pruned? Can it be pruned harder than what is shown in the video and would that be detrimental to the plant?
Caryopteris prefer light and well drained soil. Plant food is not necessary, but Osmocote Holly Tone is one you might look into. Please realize for this plant to survive outdoors in the winter you will need to live in a zone 7 or warmer climate...thanks for watching!
Our plant is about 10 yrs old and unfortunately has become overgrown and massive. Very thick branches within with lots of stems branching from them. What’s your advise on pruning it back to a smaller plant like this one?

This was really helpful, thank you. I have one of these in the back yard and I could never figure out how to prune it.
The pruning videos help a lot.
Appreciated the information you shared.
How could someone dislike anything that garden answer posts? Heathens.
You are pruning in April , can I prune in February? If February and no green out do I cut back further ? Thanks

When keeping this plant in a container, can you please suggest what type of fertilizer would be best to feed it throughout the growing season. Thanks!

I’m in zone 9b will it survive to plant this plant?
This plant is hardy into zone 9b, but it would very much enjoy afternoon shade, and a good drink of water as needed!
