I found this video so useful! I’ve been selectively cutting back plants that have died back, but it’s nice to see which ones should definitely be cut back. Thank you!
Yuliya, this a very helpful video, thank you very much! How I wish to walk with you in my garden and talk plants... I guess, everyone here feels like that. Thanks again for the work you put in your videos!
I'm in zone 4b, so I've already done my fall clean-up, but this was a very helpful video!! I really appreciated you going through plant by plant explaining what you do! (Fortunately, I think I did pretty much the same for the plants we have in common.) Thanks so much!
Hi 👋 neighbor, I’m on Long Island NY, zone 7a. A lot of what you described is definitely true for me, with a few exceptions. New subbie🙌. Great advice.
I took advantage of the warmer temps the last 2 weeks here on the shore in Md and cleaned up the garden. Also used the time to extend a garden, loaded it with a variety of spring bulbs Really appreciate that you elaborate on each plant, the why and why not.
Oh my! What is that gorgeous shrub behind you in all its fall glory, over your right shoulder? Fothergilla maybe? Thanks for all the great tips. Update: just read thru other comments and learned it’s a hamamelis or witch hazel! The other day I was browsing the net, plant dreaming, of course, and came across various cultivars of hamamelis and decided I needed at least one of these in my garden. This shot of you in front of yours confirms it!!! 🧡💛
Thanks so much for your great videos. I'm in PA and zone 6b so I use your blogs to know what I'm supposed to be doing on my garden each season. Thanks for keeping me on my toes and my gardens looking great.
Very helpful! I think this is one of the most helpful videos I have watched for gardening. I have never had clear instructions about when and why. Many thanks!
This is the first year I am cutting almost everything back - really bad fungal issues throughout so all the detritus is going in the trash. I usually leave the same plants up through winter that you do, but this year I'm worried the fungus will overwinter. It was so bad that I may need to treat everything in the spring with copper fungicide (yikes!) And then add back micorrhyzae in late June. So sad. I love watching the Goldfinch hang on the echinacea stems to eat seeds.
Another great video! You have a beautiful garden Yuliya! I garden in Calgary, Alberta Canada, zone 4, so my cleanup has been done for awhile. We live in a 'Chinook' zone so our temperatures can swing wildly in the winter! Plus, we get lots of drying, warm winds coming over the Rockies. Nice for humans spending time outside, but not so great for the plants. I cut down most of my perennials - tossing anything diseased into the garbage and the rest on my compost pile. Then, I throw down bone meal and top the beds with shredded leaves and wait for spring.
Спасибо Юля! Очень своевременное видео. Спасибо что написала названия растений. Сад даже осенью выглядит хорошо, особенно если любишь там возиться с растюшками! Зимой много птичек прилетит покормиться и от ветра спрятаться . Happy Thanksgiving!
any and all perennials provide a lot of shelter for wintering insects, seeds for birds, etc. cutting them down in the spring and leaving them on the ground provides nutrients for the soil; same with fall leaves
Thank you for all the wonderful cleanup tips, Yulia! I will be out in my garden tomorrow doing some cleanup, and it's good to know which ones to cut back!
Very informative list and greatly helps with fall garden chores. What about lavender in DE, zone 7a. Some of mine are quite large so concerned about snow weight. Should they be cut back now or wait until spring? Thanks!🙏🙏
Yulia your videos are always so detailed and informative! I love that I learn something new each time I watch your channel 🤩 What is that beautiful tree that is in full fall glory behind you at the end of the video? 🍂 Love from NJ 💕
Hi Yuliya 😊 Thanks for posting. Good info. I have some advice for others questioning when to prune their plants. If not searching on line, your Nursery will have information for you. They have printed info they will give to you on various plants, if you ask. As for me, I live in an association and am on the list for no pruning or trimming shrubs. Unfortunately this year as did 2 years ago, they came through and tore off my plants. It upsets me so, but nothing I can do anything about. It hurts me personally as I do not treat my pretty girls like that. Heurcheras, Hellabores and ferns, among others. I had already done my fall cleanup choices. Here's prayers for next year! Hope all is well, and Happy 🦃 Day, dear! xo
great video! i have not started fall clean up yet since i'm in NC7b - some things are still flowering! i kinda wish some things would get sleepy and dry out, so i can plant my bulbs.
I am zone 9a and I’ve always left my above ground foliage that freezes (ginger, EEs etc) because I was told it protects the bulbs and rhizomes in winter
@@greatgardensforall your garden is beautiful and your information really helped me bring more and more vision to my garden areas. I sent my daughter your series on starting a garden she just moved here to the gulf coast and bought a house here so it’s helpful for her to study the yard and draw out her plans- you have the BEST series on the internet ive yet to find! So thank you 😊
Thank you this was really helpful. What about anise hyssop? I read that they have hollow stems that are prone to crown rot over the winter if you cut it down too soon. Also what is that bright orange shrub at the very end of the video? It's gorgeous!
Thank you, I’ll wait then. Witch hazel! I should have known amazing color and native too. Fothergilla is another one with vibrant fall color, both on my wishlist for next year.
Great video, Yulia. Question about yarrow: I read that it should be cut down in the fall, and I cut mine back today-but it was still green and healthy. Should I not have done that? I’m in zone 8a.
Normally i wait until the stems are brown but yours will be ok, don’t worry. I usually leave yarrow all winter long if the tops still look ok, they are very pretty in the frost. it’s one of those plants you can cut either in fall or spring 😊
I always appreciate your “garden chore” videos! It’s like a mini tour.
Thank you!
Very helpful. Thanks!

Thank you for the reminder. My autumn bride coral bells and autumn brilliance fern are phenomenal all year. I’m so glad I have these plants.

Very helpful. Now I need to find the time to get outside before it's too late 🍂🍁
I so appreciate your style of gardening! It's just so full of texture and layers. Thank you for this excellent advice!

I love this Yulia....it's pretty comprehensive! Great demonstrations as to the "how-to".... You have such a wonderful garden!
This is such a comprehensive, helpful video. I learned a lot. Thanks…

Very helpful and you covered so many plants right from your own yard!

🙏🏻 for being thoughtful and teaching of the insects that need spaces in order to survive 🙏🏻 Great video
Thank you Yulia!!! Great guide
Thank you, that was very useful. Some plants I just can't remember and end up having to look them up.
Thank you. Very helpful. Answered a bunch of questions.
Cutting back is its own version of creative editing 👍
Yes! 😊
Thank you for this! It's helpful to know the criteria to use to decide on Fall vs. Spring cleanup.
Good information. Beautiful shot of you and plants at the end of the video.
thank you!

It is hamamelis 😊
Super helpful and perfect timing!
Thanks for this video!! I find after fall cleanup the garden looks so good before the winter nap!!🌸🌸

Would love you to do a fall tour of your yard with plant names!!! Thanks ❤️
There is one last year, around this time 😊
Such a helpful video thank you! Where can I get autumn brilliance ferns? I can never find them in any gardens where I live in zone 7b Queens NY.

You can cut either in the fall or spring. I prefer to cut mine in spring as it has some winter interest. the tree is hamamelis 😊

This is so useful!
Is that a boxwood in the pot (next to the second plant)
What was the name of the product you shared on IG to treat fungal issues on peonies? Mine have had it terribly the past few years.
Hi Yuliya. Should I prune my roses now or wait for spring?

Why garden just for us humans? Birds need the seeds & young spiders use stems to weave, eat & grow. I cut back way less now.
