Just finished this today. Not going to lie, after having read the original trilogy, Best Served Cold, The Heroes, and now Red Country, this one has probably been my favorite so far. Actually felt very somber at the ending and was on my mind all morning after I finished it. "I ain't proud o' much but I'm proud o' you." Moving on to Sharp Ends now.
I haven't read Abercrombie yet, so thanks for the recommendation to read in publication order. H has so many books, it's hard to know where best to start.
Dude, you’re the only book reviewer I’ve stumbled across that’s as casual with profanities as I am. Feels like I’m chatting with a friend. Definite fucking sub, my dude.
Red country is not my favorite of his books but I still enjoyed it, but I am on the trouble with peace now and it is absolutely fantastic it might be my favorite book of his which would make it my favorite of the year. Hope you like the new trilogy because I am loving it!
Ordered the box set of this, Best Served Cold and The Heroes and cant wait to dive back into this. I read the First Law trilogy in 2013 so it has been a while. Aside that, solid review! You literally made me convert to mostly grimdark books instead of just dabbling in it like I used to. Great channel!
While it is my least favourite Abercrombie, it's still leagues ahead of a lot of other Fantasy books I've read. Some of the short stories in Sharp Ends did make me appreciate Red Country more in hindsight so maybe my opinion will be more positive on a re-read.
I’m definitely on the side of loving this one. I thought it was the most consistently funny book of his. It also might help that I love westerns, I didn’t find it slow at all. The Dragon People also adds to the lore of the world, which Is also good.
Red Country feels like an homage to Deadwood, Spaghetti Westerns and Larry McMurtry westerns. Nicomo Cosca is always the MVP! Sharp Ends is really worth the read if you love the First Law world, and its characters! Btw, I don't think The Shattered Sea trilogy is particulary "YA".
@@slowlyred2082 The Heroes just wasn't for me. I loved BSC and Red Country a lot. Best Served Cold was the fastest I ever read a book. I think it only took me a few days. But then I was on break from school so I had a lot of time to read lol. But I don't understand why so many people love the Heroes maybe I'm just not a war story person? But when I say that people say "First Law is just one big war story."
@@slowlyred2082 I'm the opposite. I hated Gorst as a POV. I loved Finree. When Finree put him in his place I was like "thank god." His obsession with her was just too much. It felt really rapey to a point. I really only liked the POVs of Finree and Calder. I really did not care for anyone else.
Thank you for your review! Which of the stand-alones, do you think is the best? My favorite Abercrombie character is in the Heroes, so I am not really warm on Best Serve Cold and Red Country. But you got me curious about Red Country by saying that it is the best plot. I just finished The Wisdom of Crowds and needed comfort food to get over the disappointment.
My oldest doesn't read much, though he used to love diary of a wimpy kid. My oldest daughter just started so she reads pretty much anything she can, lol. The other two have yet to learn
Red Country feels so different than all the rest of First Law to me. It's the black sheep of the family. The odd child. And I love it for that.
Yeah I absolutely love red country great read
Nicomo is one of my favorite characters.
Mine too. Such a dastardly dude 🖤

Loved the part when Lamb was holding out in the building at night and you really found out who he was
I had a sneaking suspicion about who he was.

I enjoyed this bad boy too. Love a bit of western style action.
Don't forget the short story collection Sharp Ends Marko!
Red country is a nice change up. And the bit where Lamb looks through his fingers at Golden is just glorious. One of my favourite Abercrombie moments

Loved this book too. Strongly recommend reading the short stories. Super quick to get through and it enriches all of the previous stories.
Agreed!
I'll be looking forward to your review of Age of Madness! great review, as always!

Red Country is my second favorite western just behind Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy.
Great review!
You should definitely check out Lonesome Dove. I have no doubt it will make it to the very top of your list!

I really enjoyed red country it's definitely a step up from the hero's to me 😃😊👍

For me, I pictured Shy as looking, sounding, and having the mannerisms of the character Ruth from the show Ozark.
I love that show
I enjoyed it but i enjoyed the other 2 standalones more
Best Served Cold is still my favorite of his 🖤
I think you should be casted for Cosca 😂
That would be too good 😆 id have to go full method
@@slowlyred2082 A drink! A drink!
Slowly catching up to AoM
This is my least favourite Abercrombie book, but still a fun read. The new trilogy is just so good, fantastic!
I'm excited 😁
Hey, really, like your reviews and recommendations. How come no more content ???
Life. I got four kids and a job. As well as living out in rural Alaska can be pretty challenging and a lot of work.
@slowlyred2082 crazy I got on child and that's busy busy couldn't even fathom 4
Mike hated this book 😭
Did you ever end up reading the Age of Madness trilogy, Mark?
Not yet. Been dragging my feet on everything lately
BSC > RC > TH
Out of the stand alones for me
BSC 🙌

Yeah BSC is very fast paced, especially for Abercrombie. Absolutely loved every bit of it. I really loved Gorst in Heroes, but couldn't stand Finree

I enjoyed how unhinged he became. But I do agree he gives off a vibe.

I loved Best Served Cold from beginning to end. The Heroes has Gorst which pretty much was the shining highlight of that one, for me
@@slowlyred2082 Gorst!!! My favorite character!
At no point in Red Country was I not engaged. I think people’s attention spans are shrinking.
What do your 4 kids read?.I'm teacher and I want to motivate my little darlings
My oldest doesn't read much, though he used to love diary of a wimpy kid. My oldest daughter just started so she reads pretty much anything she can, lol. The other two have yet to learn
Did not really like it. The Heroes is best of the standalones followed by Best Served Cold. Red Country is at the bottom of the barrel for me.
Best Served Cold is my favorite 🖤
