      To quote Adam Burn (concept artist at Lucasfilm):
      "In some fields A.I imagery may well result in the loss of work for artists, especially newer artists who are maybe just starting out and where they are typically hired less on their merits as an artist but more to do with their ability to use Photoshop or similar image creation software"

    This was an excellent video - thank you! I've been really low over the last few days as a media designer as I see my skills and talents being devalued and eroded. I just wonder why out of all of the world's problems, AI research and development (funded with billions of dollars) has chosen to pick on attacking one of the most enjoyable industries you can aspire to - yeah guys don't bother going after climate change, war or disease! The images being churned out are amazing, but the death of human craft and imagination points to a bleak future for us as we become mindless consumers and applaud ourselves for typing a sentence into a request bar.

    i have been playing around with mid-journey and disco, its been fun i must admit, buutttt it feels similar to the instant gratification of ticktock etc etc, gave me a little bit of fun but didnt create any lasting gratification like learning the hard way does. it did spark a few ideas for my own work tho! i just dont like the fact that painting is just doesnt feel special anymore, anyone can produce images now and my ego doesnt like that haha

      Totally understand that gratification--I've had similar thoughts when I've done photo-bashing in the past. It works and it produces good results, but sometimes it's not the most _satisfying_ way to make a painting. So I often do stuff by hand even though it takes longer and is harder.
      I suspect a lot of AI art will go that same way. It'll be a tool that a lot of artists will use but I think there's still a lot to bring to the table with doing it by hand. Hell, maybe it'll even make those artists more sought after in some circles. Maybe it'll make original art more valuable (until we've got robots painting AI art on canvas).
      And thanks so much! Appreciate the support. We're looking forward to getting back to shooting more reference together soon, in fact.

Its going to decimate any opportunities for freelance artists that are just starting out. They just like it enough, especially for the price, and that is that.

    I wish I have the same optimism. We need to be more wise and look a little forward in future. Where do you think this kind of tool will end up in several years? In a hand of big companies and what moves such companies? money of course. They'll try and improve AI, (which can happen in a matter of months in right hands, )so that, they would need as few artists as possible.
    That's cliche i get it, but this kind of future seems more real than thinking that such tool will not evolve into something much more powerful.
    In general I think AI development should be strictly controlled in every industry that it's created for, but no one controls it. That's the main reason of my worries.

  • @Pandaghus

    I think Rachel hits the nail on the head @29:30 - predicting markets is difficult, because they're so capricious in nature. Having briefly played around with DALL-E and Midjourney, it is clear - even after the tech fully(?) matures - that human problem-solving and decision-making may remain in high demand, even after technical aptitude doesn't.
    But that's precisely my fear. I'm not as optimistic that the bread-and-butter work available for entry-level artists, whether in-house or freelance, will simply appear elsewhere.
    Some of these AI subreddit members are already salivating at the idea of commercial artists being a thing of the past, and their fantasies may very well come to fruition. Have OpenAI, or nVidia, or the Midjourney crew really considered the ramifications of this technology becoming mainstream? There's a lot of talk about "democratisation", but corporate oligarchy is just as likely with this, and they don't really have to care if that is the eventual outcome.
    This shouldn't dissuade anyone from pursuing their passions, but we really need to take a hard look at ourselves and the economy in which we operate. AI won't "kill" illustrators; the profit motive did, has, and will.
    What's happening in the entertainment industry, I think, is a harbinger of what will happen everywhere, eventually. Our entire concept of "making a living" needs to change. But in the short-mid term, I'd agree that this would help smaller, less well-funded teams and individuals in producing original IPs... price-tag permitting. I hope I'm just being silly, because learning art IS hard, but I'll be damned if it hasn't been fun :)
    Thanks for the video, guys!

    You covered a lot of great points regarding AI art helping people who just want to quickly concept ideas without the skills to do so. For a lot of hobbyists that demand art - especially for something like custom tabletop game campaigns, or custom art for card games - the AI art bots offer a lot of great opportunities to get a relatively close concept for an idea in their head without needing to go through a lengthy commission process or digging through thousands of old artstation images. I don't doubt that AI will get better, but demand will grow to match and I don't believe that humans will ever create an AI that can share the imaginative/creative process with a human the same way another human can.

    • @TeamBradley

      Yeah I _love_ what it could do for independent creators to make their projects a reality. I've had friends design games and ask how much it would take to hire artists to illustrate their game. The figures at bare minimum are tens of thousands of dollars. That just makes it impossible to even get a project going without a _huge_ outlay. And not everybody is in it for the make-it-on-kickstarter thing. Some people just want to make a game. I love knowing that AI could make that more possible for some people to do.
      Not to mention the increase in productivity might massively expand what any one artist can produce. I know with this sort of thing I could crank out work faster than without it. A lot faster.

    I've came to the similar conclusions about these AI art softwares. I dont see that it can replace the human artists in the near future,because its not controllable where its puts the objects, lack of coherency. Looks good because the part of our brain which is responsible for identify things around us by shapes with "associating" what its could be is triggered. Like seeing animals in cloud forms etc. Personally i think its another tool for artists,because sometimes spits out pretty good starting points for images, so i can paint over to give structure and coherency. Probably traditional and concept artist less likely see the benefits, but im not specialized to full on digital painting, more like photobashing/manipulation/mixed media and painting so its helps my workflow.

      That's a really good point. Music has had quantum leaps in accessibility and quality that can be achieved by the general populace (see FL Studio and its various one-click plugins to make anything sound instantly pleasing), but all the technical skills to do with writing and properly mixing music are still fundamental. The cheap tricks are an instant dogwhistle of poor production quality, and those with actual skills and love of the game are still always the ones who make it to the top 1% of their field.

It's subtle because there obviously isn't some artistic caste system, but the good stuff tends to float to the top.
      I also think it's important that, yeah, AI art exists but AI *artists* don't, nor will they ever. The various imperfections and random neuron firings of the human brain, combined with highly attuned picture-making skills are what create artists we can relate to and enjoy, and I feel like that's what Noah and Rachel touched on when they brought up this idea of art telling a story.

    This stuff is improving at a astounding rate. The future is not about drawing and painting anymore. It's about learning to utilize all these apps into a functional workflow for speed and effeciency. You will be able to create cinematic block busters from your coach thanks to server power, the cloud and AI.
    But you have bigger issues... Add to this AI monster the idea of CRISPR designed babies and in a couple of generations human beings as we know them will be a thing of the past. If you can cost-effectively genetically modify humans to be smarter, faster, more beautiful then we are redundant. It's weird, almost every tech development , from self driving cars, boston dynamic's robots, midjourney AI, 3D printing etc is replacing physical labour. It's like man's answer to the Biclical Fall. We don't need a God to go back there. We can counter the punishment of labouring "in the sweat of your brow" with and machine server power. The writing is on the wall. I mean, when you have silicon valley intrepreneurs waving normal human beings as a burden and glorifying a "new designed haminity" then we are pretty much damned.
    It's suddenly starting to make sense why there's a problem with "overpopulation". It wasn't about food (you can feed the whole of Africa just from the rich farmlands in Transkei) but about being anunneccasry burden on society. It's also making a LOT more sense now why euthenasia is being pushed. You might not like it but when you have mass populations suffering from a existential crisis because of AI, advanced genetics etc then well,... going permanently to sleep doesn't sound so bad. The world that is coming wasn't meant for you and me. It's for a higher class of human. A couple of us "normal" humans will propably end up in reserves with the rest of the animal kingdom.
    Anyways. Gonna be a hectic ride the next couple of decades. See you on the other side.

    It's really about a tool that makes people even more stupider than they are now, than being replaced by Artificial Intelligence. Young people would rather use the A.I. than go through the long and arduous journey of understanding the fundamentals of good art; nobody wants to learn the hard way because of the handmaid of technology. Even master artists (including you guys) have gone through the rabbit hole, and have created awe inspiring art that made thousands to learn art too (that includes me).
    However, due to the lazy, inept, and illiterate nature of the new generations to come, via birth of the all knowing entertainment mother technology, art would eventually become debased in the next coming years. For god's sake, even adolescents these days are flooding the internet with terrible generated art, sinking the good ones below the mariana trench of the internet that will never be seen and appreciated by anyone.

    But with all other tools you still had to have a very huge amount of skill. With AI as long as you have basic control of your keyboard you can do any painting in any style you want. Sure rn they all seem the same and obviously computer made but they advance very fast…
    One of the main points that makes things exciting and special is that most people cant do it. It takes couple of years to get to a decent level and most people dont spend all that time refining a skill. But if everyone can just „print out“ Artworks with no difference to hand made Art it looses a big chunk of value.
    The only reason people turn around if you drive by in your ferrari, is because they are expensive therefore there arent many on the street. If everyone had a ferrari or would be able to afford one, no one would care anymore and if you down the street in yours.
    Same with Art. The reason people admire the mona lisa is because its the amount of skill, dedication and knowledge that goes in to that piece. Not many people could do that as it required a lifetime of learning at the time it was created.
    And for jobs, i think the main goal for companies is money. If AI produces good enough concept art in a few years, there wouldnt be a need for a paid position to do that.

      It is not about a pretty image. I have seen vast amounts of concept art that is not beautiful nor pretty. The thing is that a concept artist is more of a salesman, he has to be a designer of sorts. If you like to follow chess, something similar happened. An AI came into the scene and defeated Kasparov. Everybody said Chess would die and that the tournaments would cease to exist. Hasn't happened. Besides computer generated art is pretty but after seeing some you distinguish it. Look at Noahs overpaints, you will see that the image gets better once he applies his storytelling and composition knowledge on the image. Plus the best AI images that get traction are the ones where a Pro Artist has used one of his own sketeches as a starting point.

    • @wyv8570

      @@julianfernandez7765 For right now thats true. In the Chess example, sure nobody wants to see a computer play chess and you can tell if a person is playing or a computer by directly seeing them (same in every other sport). But in a couple years AI is going to be able to produce images that arent distinguishable from human made Art. Instagram and the internet in general will be flooded with that since everyone can create hundreds of them in five minutes. Even now there are people who use AI and want to be seen as artists cause they have to come up with words and do a bunch to get a good image. In my opinion this has nothing to do with art. Concept Art is a different thing cause its a business and all but i dont want everyone to be an artist in 2min online. I tried painting over some AI sketches but i gave up on it cause i felt nothing. The entire feeling of achievement after finishing a work of art is not there anymore. It doesnt feel like i did someting and iam not comfortable sharing that and saying i did that. Idk that just seems wierd to me. It just feels like a thing you do on the weekend like playing football with your friends instead of a craft you spent years developing. Iam scared that this is what the future of Art will be. I want to appreciate other peoples Artworks and feel proud about my own.

At least not until (or unless) it can do more than mimic or out process the human mind. Lack of an experiential well will always be the current crops of AI hurdle. Admittedly an interesting and enlightening conversation to be had and I suppose it's better than the Terminator version of AI in the end.

      Yep, you're almost certainly right. Unless we stumble upon general AI, in which case humanity is probably fucked and art will be the least of our concerns.

    Good video, interesting ideas. Seems like artists using AI as a tool in their workflow is one thing, but why shouldn't art directors and companies just use AI generated images as final art? The current direction this is going is obviously to reduce direct human input as much as possible in the image-making process. If it makes more financial sense, companies will just change their production process to accommodate this new technology, rather than avoid using the new technology because its utility doesn't currently match their production process.

    Here's the big problem. Professional art is like a game of musical chairs. The more artists and fewer chairs, the fewer artists who get to make a living off of the skill they are passionate about for their profession. The AI programs you played with at the time of my comment has gotten logarithmically better in just a few months. What you say it can't do, they will be able to do in a short time. I used to have to compete only nationally for work, now I compete for jobs with those in countries with a lower cost of living, but are just as skilled me because of computers and the internet. Same goes for AI art. it will cost a fraction of the time and money to generate workable images. Business always goes for the best 'bang' for the buck. The population of artists keeps growing but the the number paying jobs will be heavily reduced by AI. Professional artists will not disappear, but there are also still buggy whip makers in the world.

    • @TeamBradley
      @TeamBradley  Рік тому

      You might be totally right! I'm really not sure. I do wonder, though, if the creative industry will _expand_, thanks to the increased output of all the artists. Maybe more and more people will be making more and bigger projects.
      I remain hopeful, though I realize I'm in the minority there.

    Literally this whole AI thing's just sort of floated over my head, like yeah I heard about it and seen some of the images but I've just sorted been like 'meh'...if anything it's just going to branch into more resources and tools for people to use for their own artwork, as you've mentioned there were other things in art that has generated a similar reaction from the community such as photo bashing, even digital art in general was met with much scrutiny in the beginning. Doing artwork on a computer was almost blasphemous of an idea. This is nothing more than another step in the evolution of art and is at most going to be used as some kind of tool amoung many other tools that artists use.

    • @wyv8570
      @wyv8570 2 роки тому

    I've been studying Machine Learning and AI for the past two years with the intention of working on creative AI. While the new developments are pretty exciting, it's sad that it has also created a rift between me and my artist friends. In the GAN days where everything was a melty novelty, they would tell me how funny it is and that AI is no real danger to their ambitions. Flash forward to today and I get ranted on the regular like I'm a criminal or something. It's good to know that the sentiment isn't universal at least. On the topic of creative AI, you should also keep an eye on text generation like GPT-3 and NovelAI. I have a feeling a similar shockwave is to come soon for the writing community, if anyone ever publishes an actual book with AI. I have a fantasy project in the works so maybe I'll be one of the first to do it.

      It's just awful that artists have been so adamantly opposed to these new technologies. It's just fear of change, plain and simple. I think artists should be a lot more accepting of change, but they sure don't seem to be.

    Good takes overall. I must say though that I fear the day when AI becomes so refined to the point where it CAN produce the kind of art that is currently only acheiveable by humans. Maybe at that point the artist is truly replaced by machine, but I think that's inevitable anyway? Photographs already replaced the need to draw realistic looking portraits, unless they're stylized or charicatured at least.

    • @TeamBradley
      @TeamBradley  2 роки тому +5

      I think that's the thing, though. There's less of a _need_ for someone to draw a portrait by hand to capture a likeness of someone. But there's still very much a demand for artists to be portrait painters.
      I think there's still going to be a need for artists to use and maximize things and do the things that the AI wouldn't think of doing. If anything, I suspect it'll just make pointless art even more pointless.

      I find it's pretty amazing as a source of inspiration. I love putting in a prompt and being greeted with shapes, color palettes, and moods that I wouldn't have necessarily thought of on my own.
      You can do similar with just searching for reference, of course, but I feel like this does a better job of _being_ more abstract and thus gives you more room to be creative with what it produces.

    • @EdGregor
      @EdGregor Рік тому +1

      artists are the fuel for it and now children can press the 'art button' and reap the benefits of all of those artists hard work without having to pay them anything. There is no creativity in making prompts, that is just being a consumer of the technology. I suggest the only boycott is to find people making money off of it and directly take their ai outputs and resell them as your own, since copyright law in the US requires significant human involvement in the work for it to be copywritten. Outputs by 'machines' cannot be copywritten at this time. So everyone making 'ai art' is making outputs that are not able to be owned and therefore free for everyone, so start your etsy shop out of other people's ai outputs and wait for them to sue you for copyright infringement and the court will decide whether its actually art or not. I can't wait for a large corporation to use an ai output for their brand and someone else just lift it and use it for their own. That is where I think the boycott if any happens, forcing the issue of copyright.

And by that time the AI would be so good that it will most likely be next to impossible to determine whether is non AI art allowing people to profit for little to not effort at all, not learning of skills, not effort or work.... Just the click of a button and now your an "artist"
    I mean even right now dall-e 2 is capable of producing photo realistic images, far greater quality than most other AI image generators.

      I think if/when AI gets to that point, it'll just change the definition/requirements of an artist. Just because everyone can take pictures with their phone doesn't mean that everyone is a Photographer. I think there's a chance we're headed in that direction, but I think it'll be fine. Just stay adaptable and work on fundamentals. :)

    • @shanghaitatoo

      @@TeamBradley that's a good point about the phone and photographer. It's so easy to have access to a camera these days compare to when camera was invented, but if anything, now we are more aware of what's done by professional photographers and what's done by a person with a phone. That being said, it is much harder for a photographer to make a living these days because everyone has a camera, but good photographers still exist and they are good at what they do because of their understanding of fundamentals.

    Artists with your skill set and style are 100% replaceable. Your work doesn't really add much to the entertainment industry. It's quiet generic and in many cases a lot of AI prompts can easily create artwork that is more effective in visually conveying what you seem to struggle to paint on a regular basis. AI should teach people to be more creative than what you have achieved in your life and hopefully artists that do what you do will go the way of the dinosaur. Much like your career and relevance in the entertainment industry. Both of you and your opinions for example are already irrelevant. So yeah. cool AI. please replace artists like this. Thank you
