    A quote from Andrew Loomis that really hit with me was "it's 10% how you draw and 90% what you draw" and that is to say the decisions the artist makes and what they bring to their art is far more important than technical skill. I don't think that's changed.

    • @ImRachelBradley
      @ImRachelBradley 2 роки тому +5

      I'm inclined to agree! I see many artists feeling defeated when simple comics (that they might argue are poorly drawn) have millions of followers but their 40 hour paintings go unrecognised. I think it's a really important message- the skill is secondary. What's truly important is the message behind the work and how deeply people connect with it!

    • @TeamBradley
      @TeamBradley  2 роки тому +4

      I've got that same quote saved! It's a really good one and it stuck with me. So many artists get so wrapped up in the art and forget all the other aspects that make up an artist.

    Well said! I used to think that sacrificing everything was worth the pain. It wasn't and so happy I don't have that mentality anymore. The four corners of your room isn't your life, it's people!!

    Honestly its great to see a video with you two happy and healthy!! Truly god bless best wishes hope the future treats you well~
    My niche came super easy so was lucky just had to git gud and network (and be a little less lazy lol). But I see art students graduating with all this baggage related to art and it scews their perspective that when they're off to the real world they quickly get demotivated and frustrated. They've already given up in their head it seems and forgot how to just enjoy themselves doing whatever comes natural rather than constantly being anxious if you fit in with this industry or that

      Aww, thanks! It's great to be back ^_____^
      So pleased to hear you had a relatively easy time with this! And you're right, it's so tragic to see so many people with so much potential lose their way, getting bogged down with the weight of it all and losing the very thing that could give them clarity and meaning. I'm hopeful that the collective attitude will gradually shift, and that will seep into classrooms and prevent students from burning out like that.

    Great thought-provoking discussion! Reminds me of Scott Adams (Dilbert creator). Scott said he was average at a number of things, but combined together he became brilliant. Trying to be brilliant in only one thing could lead to insanity 😃

    With so much digital wizardry floating about at our fingertips these days, It has become really interesting when we as artists try to parse or divine the "style" of another. But in the end, it all comes back to the composition and drawing. It doesn't matter how well I can apply the frosting to a cake if the sponge is dense or collapses under its own weight...the same goes for image creation. Those world builders are the creators I most admire in this time of instant gratification. (Including Rachel's and Noah's works) When I was in school for design the artists of the golden age of illustration (Wyeth, Leyendecker, Pyle, Fawcett, et al) had fallen out of favor and were actually looked down upon. But they too were not merely paint-slingers or pixel-pushers, they were storytellers and we need more of that today. Great content you two, thanks.

    • @TeamBradley

      You are absolutely right. Those fundamental skills are as important as ever and now I'd say _purpose_ for art is getting more and more vital. 10 years ago if you posted a gorgeous painting online people would go nuts over it. Nowadays there are hundreds of great images posted every day. We're desensitized to really great art. But story? Art with a purpose, meaning, emotion? That stuff hits us as hard as ever and I think that's what we should all be striving for.

    I'm a concept artist working in the games industry, and this relates to me in so many ways. Growing up hearing from everyone around you that you can't work with art, seeing so many talented people around the world. It's a tough position to be in sometimes.

    This is what I think. There is no top 1% or just get better to get there, the trick is in marketing, we have to market ourselves because in art there is a market for everyone. Find your market by marketing consistently. I am starting to get noticed but is because of marketing.

    • @amarachimuomaife
      @amarachimuomaife 2 роки тому

      Hi, how do you market???

    • @ImRachelBradley
      @ImRachelBradley 2 роки тому +1

      I think we think the same thing, but what you call marketing, I call story. It also feels a little bit less soul-destroying to "find and share your story" than to "market the heck out of your work". They're much the same thing, but I tend to see it as: companies market, individuals have stories ^_____^

    • @1223santigato
      @1223santigato 2 роки тому

      @@ImRachelBradley that is also very important, the lenguage that we use to make an idea more palatable for ourselves. To me it all boils down to how can we afford to live our dreams and in the end it has to do with sales and with marketing.

    ohh it's so so great to see creators chat back with both of you! i love the episodes in the past and very happy to see this continued. Great episode with so many valuable insights, really needed to hear this. I personally struggle a lot with talking about my personal insights / story regarding my art, so every angle and perspective on that topic is helping me to maybe share a bit more about that with future posts. And I wanted to add that I'm absolutely in love with the wallpaper in the background haha, it's gorgeous. :D

      Thank you, we're so glad to be back! It's nice to be met with such a warm reception, too. :)
      It can be really hard to open up and talk about yourself online. At best it feels really vulnerable. At worst we can be attacked or ignored for being ourselves. That hurts! And it's scary just to think about. So I think a lot of artists are reluctant to share too much of themselves, instead focusing on the art. But I think it's a good thing to try to do, to really be ourselves and put ourselves out there. It can suck sometimes but I think it's better than not doing it at all.

    Wonderful surprise this morning!
    Really good point on how your story can help you stand out, grow, and even discover your audience. Art isn’t my career but it’s nice finding a following that doesn’t just appreciate my paintings but my thoughts as well. I’ve got ideas dammit!

    • @TeamBradley
      @TeamBradley  2 роки тому

      Haha, exactly! We're all real, three dimensional people with stories and thoughts and feelings! I think incorporating all of those things into your online persona is one of the best ways to stand out from the hordes of nameless, faceless artists.

    For me it's been tough because i have a full time job and am trying to learn on my off time. I didn't really start taking it seriously until a few years ago when most people are already pros. thats the tought part

    • @TeamBradley
      @TeamBradley  2 роки тому +1

      That's really hard. A lot of people don't pick art as their first pursuit (or second) and so many people have to balance it with jobs, family, and other responsibilities. It makes a hard pursuit even harder.
      Definitely something we'd like to do a chat about sometime. While we've both been pretty blessed to get to focus on art (Rachel starting a fair bit later than I did), we do still probably have a few things to say on all of it that might be encouraging. You can do this!

  • @sjZhyren
    @sjZhyren 2 роки тому +2

    I feel like I have known this on some level for some years now and it's still a scary topic for me. Still looking for that thing which I could bring in to combine with my art or as an artist. Somehow makes it feel like you need something even more and hard work will not be enough.
    Maybe I'll eventually stumble on it.

    • @TeamBradley
      @TeamBradley  2 роки тому +1

      It's really hard and I think you're right-experimentation is probably your best bet for finding what it is. I'm sure some people could probably plan it all out ahead of time (I'm going to be the greatest butterfly painter that does high end video production EVER), but I think for the rest of us we've just gotta explore our interests until a good combination clicks for us.
      I do think you're on the right track, though. Your art is looking killer these days and I think you'll get to where you want to be.

    • @ImRachelBradley
      @ImRachelBradley 2 роки тому

      It's really scary and daunting, and sadly something that rarely happen overnight. But it's my hope (and belief) that, in the long run, it'll be LESS hard work, not more. Because when you find 2+ things that you enjoy that work harmoniously together, the growth is often exponential. Wishing you all the best!
