  • Joe Starita holds an endowed chair at the University of Nebraska College of Journalism and Mass Communications. Previously, he spent 14 years at The Miami Herald -- four years as the newspaper's New York Bureau Chief and four years on its Investigations Team, where he specialized in investigating the questionable practices of doctors, lawyers and judges. One of his stories was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in local reporting.
Interested since his youth in Native American history and culture, Starita returned to his native Nebraska in 1992 and began work on a three-year writing project examining five generations of a Lakota-Northern Cheyenne family. The Dull Knifes of Pine Ridge -- A Lakota Odyssey, published in 1995 by G.P. Putnam Sons (New York), won the Mountain and Plains Booksellers Award, was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in history, has been translated into six languages and is the subject of an upcoming BBC documentary.
Joe Starita's talk focuses on why we need stories. Using the historic example of Chief Standing Bear, Starita tells how one man fought a battle in the US legal system instead of the front line. Stories inspire us to look deeper into ourselves.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Playwright Mary Kathryn Nagle (Cherokee) has written an excellent play "Waaxe's Law," which explores the journey of Standing Bear as the first Native American legally recognized "a person under the law." This TEDx Talk is a wonderful introduction and tribute to the Ponca and the family of Standing Bear. Thank you Joe Starita.

Mister star Rita pardon my phone it gets my words discombobulated so I'm very sorry that your name came out wrong. I've been trying for over 10 years a federal and state holiday for all Native Americans after all they are the first people of this country! I have read your book I am a man quite a few times and I love it! You did a wonderful job interested in introducing our repair Chief Standing Bear two people who read about him and I thank you very very much. Now it's a forest trying to get a federal holiday from Native American Indians on May 12th no one is listening to me so I'm sorry sir I give up I wave the white flag! I hear also channels I said all sorts of news about the covid-19 about the African Americans the Latinos the whites but Asians I don't hear anything about Native American Indians! The only thing I heard about Native American Indians was that on an Apple home Indian reservation I said Navajo Indian Reservation there's no running water so how could these poor people wash their hands all the time? I am giving up I am very sorry nobody's listening to me in Nebraska Oklahoma or anywhere and I'm tired of it I am tired of being tired! I had lung cancer a year-and-a-half ago I think it came back and now I just can't do anything I told I give up. I give up on everything I'm very sorry! I feel nobody cares about Chief Standing Bear have a good day and stay healthy mr. Star Rita.
