ASICS NOVABLAST 5 REVIEW - BEST DAILY RUNNING SHOE CONTENDER FOR 2024? - EDDBUD
An initial review of the new ASICS NOVABLAST 5, an update to the very popular model now with a new improved midsole foam.
Over 41mm of foam here with a midsole update, a new upper material and a very soft rubber outsole.
This is a shoe sent to me from ASICS for review, but they are not paying me to making this video nor will they be watching my video or vetting my views before my valued viewers get to see it.
I comment on the upper, midsole and outsole after my initial runs.

ASICS is doing a lot right these days. When you said the shoe was making you want to run, that summed up the review for me. If a shoe can do that, it’s a banger.
Yes it’s quite superb for the price
Coffee and an Edd video to watch on a Saturday morning, perfect👌
Coffee is the way forward. I feel my age this morning! 🤣
I am so happy for Asics, they manage to turn things around big time in the past 3-4 Years. Their shoes are no muss no fuss kinda stuff - no crazy tech, no huge cutouts, no weird uppers. I just finished my weekend long run in the Superblast 2 - 32Km with an avg pace of 4:35, flawless.
Novablast 4 are such a good daily trainer, and the Metaspeed Edge Paris are my PB half marathon shoe with 1:25:15.
I just got another pair of Superblast 2 on sale for 150€ and I am super excited for the Metaspeed 4th version, the proto that were seen in Chicago and NY are 🔥🔥🔥
Some big changes but subtle improvements
ASICS are definitely my brand of the 2024. Superblast 2 has been just awesome, whatever I put it through. Nimbus has been a solid easy day/recovery workhorse and the Metaspeed Sky Paris guided me to a wonderful marathon PB. Can't wait to add the NB5 to the collection. That colourway rocks!
Same here. Love the Superblast 2 for my long runs, Used the Metaspeed Sky Paris for a half marathon and had a PR. Pre-ordered the Novablast 5 for my everyday training. 10K and below.
I love the fact that the Novablast is always evolving. And i dig this colorway sooo much!
@@dhgpan great looking and performing shoe
The return of the sniff test🎉
These will be an almost instant buy for me. I’ve had two previous versions and loved them. I’m confused by the Superblasts. I’ve done about 40 miles in them but have knee pain the day after almost every run in them. It’s more like ligament tendon soreness around the knee rather than the knee itself. Really odd. My guess is I’m over striding in them but I’m hoping the softer nature of the NB5’s will be a better match for me.
Won't it be nice to have a takumi sen upper with novablast foam and puma grip to finish it off.
Best daily trainer ever.
Cheers 🍻
A frankenshoe. But a good one
I’ll be upgrading my novablast 3 to the 5. Have loved running in them. Looking forward to getting these
You will love these mate!
I knew I'd regret watching this - I'll have to buy them now 😅
Great review Edd really enjoyed and appreciate it really loved the part where you smell the garden in the shoe and love when you say MORE great going love charisma excellent MORE.
Have always run in Asics an love my NB4's and have just gone through 600km in them. Will be starting marathon training in 3 weeks so think the NB5 will be getting purchased. My only issue with Asics is I think their colour-ways and styling have been behind their rivals by quite a long way. that being said, I love these ones.
Used Novablast since v1 - great shoes and look forward to the v5
Asics has done a very good job over the years with their daily offerings with their lockdown of both the foot arch and the heel. Unlike some brands that just can't seem to get it consistently right....or not right at all. I skipped the NB V4, but put in over 1300km in 2 pairs of NB V3 this year alone, so really hoping the V5 can replace my V3s, and keep my use of the Superblast V2 to days it's truly meant for later in my marathon block.
It’s a nice update from the v4. Much softer and very usable
@@EDDBUDthis very softer concerns me as a heavier guy!
Also, other reviewers called it "slightly softer" or "noticely softer", but not "very much softer".
Also your first run impression of less stability concerns me. My foot gait is perfectly neutral, but the rides of nb4 and sb1 are, despite beeing boats, very nice :)
From what I hear, I actually got excited for this version. I ran in Novablast OG which had an exciting ride and the shoe was extremely durable that it lasted past v2 release. V3 was light and looking great but performance was lacking. V4 got heavier and foam got even more dull. Upper was also too thick. This version (V5) seems to return back to the fun ride of the original. I would get it sometime if/when it gets a discount deal. I am not in a rush. I already have too many daily trainers to run and retire and not enough hours or legs to put them on.
I think at some point ASICS thought they would put ASICS GRIP rubber on this one. There is one reviewer (RUN-ARE) from Australia that got a pair of NB5 with ASICS GRIP outsole. Later they changed to AHAR LO which is soft but not as grippy or durable rubber AFAIK.
Hmm that’s interesting. I will buy a trail version if they release it
So happy you found this to be such a banger!
Yay, I was the 1K like for this video. I love the Novablast. Use it for my daily trainer. More durable than other shoes in this price range, and comfort level for marathon training.
G’day to everyone 👍
🥉
Top o' the morning to youZz
I’ve had the original novablast the 3’s, 3TR and 4 and I’ve loved all of them (missed the 2 as the OG lasted so long and was such great fun) great review and so glad they haven’t messed it up. Will defo be picking up a pair of 5’s 👍
Love all my ASICS shoes.
Nice review as always :) Very appreciated!
This "very softer than my NB4 TR“ concerns me as a heavier guy!
Also, other reviewers called it "slightly softer" or "noticely softer", but not "very much softer".
Also your first run impression of less stability concerns me. My foot gait is perfectly neutral, but the rides of nb4 and sb1 are, despite beeing boats, very nice :)
Fun fact: some review shoes have Asics Hybridgrip as an outsole (or just the word stamped in the rubber) and now it is AHAR-LO again in the release shoe?
Seems ASICS wants to keep the distance between the NB series and the SB series + also the price of the NB down and the margins up.
Glad you liked it! I'll be having a pair as soon as my Triumph 21s are shot. I had the NB 2 and 3, but skipped the 4.
Hi Edd! One thing I really appreciate of your reviews is the width measurements! Keep It up!
Thanks for the support 👍🏼
With how soft you’ve described the foam, and the outsole grip being a bit naff in slippery conditions, it’s making me want to buy Novablast 4 TR instead. Very helpful review though, much appreciated!
I have it and it is really nice and versatile!
I am concerned with the NB5 beeing softer. The question is: how much softer and unstable is it really, since I am a heavier runner with 90kg/200lbs
The magic is back in this version... I think I like the 5 more than the Superblast 2 (and I love the SB2). Great improvements all around and I find it more comfortable than the 4. Has some of the ol' bounce from the 3. Great review, Edd!
Totally agree, bit softer and more like the original ethos
Good review, thank you!
What suprises me is that you dislike (a bit) the outsole. I think you‘re the first reviewer to do so, most say it‘s a huge improvement compared to V4, especially when it comes to grip on the wet.
It’s quite slippery in wet smooth surfaces
I picked this up at the NYC Marathon Expo. Great shoe, great energy return and comfort. You can really pick up the pace with this shoe as well. The G.O.A.T is still the Novablast 1, though.
You had me at invincible - sounds a banger of a shoe! Great review as always
It’s really good. Much better than I had anticipated.
Invincible1,2 or the 3? I liked the 1,2 a lot more for the cushiness!
Thanks for making your top videos Ed 🙏🏾. Will always try to support your channel when I can.
Thanks so much Sir!
Real keen to pick up v5. My first novablast was the 3, and loved the two pairs I had of those. Got the 4 online and discovered the sizing wasn’t quite the same after persevering through a number of runs. The 5 sounds great and keen to try them
Best of the bunch. Asics have been 🔥in 2024
Great review Ed. All the the nuts and bolts of the shoe covered 🏃♂️
Thanks 👍
Excellent. And Asics are the boss too. 👌
So, thumbs up for the asics Squashyblast!
Love the smelling the shoe section, like it's a fine wine 😂
This one still smells like that. For now!
I loved the 4 so I’m sticking with nova! Cheers bud u legend
Great review, I will wait for the new Nimbus then have a feel for both to pick one
Waiting for more color-ways as I just received my second pair of Superblast 2’s, looks like a very promising, affordable daily trainer. Love the high stack and from what I hear the less slappy outsole, it being softer now, not so sure how I feel about that, but we will see. Regardless 140 US is a very fair deal.
Thanks!
Thanks for the super support my man 👍🏼👊
Great review!!! Detailed and comprehensive as usual 👍
Dankeschön! I will stick with my 3 pairs of NB 3 😄 The NB 5 seems like a "light" Gel Nimbus 25 or 26. But it seems like a nearly perfect daily trainer. Have a good weekend
Top notch trainer with some great cushion for the money
@@EDDBUD That`s true!
Outstanding video Edd! Great work, thank you! 🙏☑️🎯 You are so good at what you do.
Thank you kindly
Lacing up using all the eyelets is what I do in almost all my running shoes. 👍
Thank you for the video. I am torn between the 4 and 5. Primary use is short runs and speed/interval sessions. Advice appreciated.
Hoping the 4 will reduce in price when 5 is out. TR version seems to be a must.
Since my nb4tr is stiffer than the coming nb5, it seems better suited. BUT, let me tell you this: strides no problem. But when you go all out on a 400-500m run within an intervall training, you reach the edge of usability. So, no sprints. As an uptempo daily trainer which can also go long and also slower, the nb4 is perfect. The faster you go, the lighter you have to be i guess. I am heavy and i absolutely cannot sprint in the whole Novablast lineup. Strides no problem.
Some good insight here 👍🏼👊
@@EDDBUD thanks MasterG! Or: MasterEdd 👍
Good morning. Fantastic information. Like to EDDBUD. A nice weekend for everyone.
Good morning!
Just ordered my pair of novablast 5
A touch softer than the last 2. Great daily model
Interesting Edd. This is one I think I might pass on as just seems a bit wide for me as all the previous one have been and this seems more roomy ? I recently binned my Invincible 2 as gone off ultra soft shoes. And I still have beef with ASICS for only offering this as their “best” shoe in a UK 13. Notable though that although looks like a Superblast is actually different.
Many thanks for the review Edd! Question: which of Novoblast 5 and SL2 has more rebound, more oomph?
The sl2 is good don’t get me wrong. Just feel this ticks more boxes
Hi 👋 thank you for the video and nice analysis. This Nova 5 seems to be very interesting. Would you recommend it as a one for all (light run, long run (half marathon or 30k, fartlek ?…) I have plated shoes for 5/10 K … or should I wait for a superblast 2 restock ?
Thanks 😊
9:50 44/36mm for a «slightly more minimal stack» there… 😅 Really curious to try the NB5 myself, I’ve heard mixed reviews about it so far - I fear they won’t fit my narrow feet well. The Novablast is hard to beat for value, though. I’ve had 2 pairs of both the NB1 and the NB3, and they can take 1000km with no problem at all! Incredible how they can pack so much stack and durability at that weight and price point.
Adidas and ASICS leading the way for me. Evo sl will be very popular
I had the 2s, were a great shoe until the upper gave out (more a me problem than the shoe); skipped on the 3s and it’s been nearly impossible to get the 4s. Not sure about the current colour ways of the 5, but I hope the availability is better at least!
The contrast between your review and the BITR review is staggering!
I’m keen to see how these compare against the Adi Evo SL (though that’s just a downgraded Adios Pro 3…)
Also consider the NB4 TR Version! It is the same shoe, just with a little thicker rubber, which couses a little deeper grooves.
+15-20grams for this i take any day of the week. This Version should be the standard NB4!
Great, great great review, thank you.
I'll be waiting for the TR-version, it will be hard to find a dry surface within the next months.
Yes it’s true, in the uk right now it’s chucking it down!
Love your videos! How do you think this compares to the 1080v14, both are soft but is the Novablast more fun and a little more stable?
Not tried the v14 yet. I hear that is soft. But the nova has more rebound
Love my NB3. My marathon Pb was done in them.
Definitely the best version of the Novablast 👌
@@marga_asana2runabsolutely not! I have a nb4tr, then i bought a new nb2 and then a nb3.
Didn't like the wobbly useless shoe (at that point for ME) and sold it.
NB4 has the far better ride. And for a more “conservative“ or regular or not THAT wide shoe, there is the nb2.
The nb3 doesn't have any place for me. It is not a bad shoe in any way, but if the nb2 and the nb4 exist, what do you do with a nb3?
The bounce was pretty much the same on all 3 shoes, so no advancement in that category when going back from nb4 to nb3. Or from nb2 to nb3.
I haven't had my feet in the original NB though.
@@philipppuchner1115 I understand your point of view, but everyone has different feet, preferences and opinions. For example, I always wondered why they hyped the Invincible 3 so much. As a result, I bought one pair, but it felt so mushy and clunky to me! It looked like I've got a couple of lifeboats under my feet, but for many people it's the best shoe of all shoes. I walked once only a 1 km in it and I had shin splints for a week 🤣Have a good weekend 😀
@@marga_asana2run Sure :)
Similar thing hapüpended to me, but with the La Sportiva Solutions (climbing shoe).
I thought this is thw worst shoe ever after trying it.
Years later i tried it again and I like it and use it to this day.
Opinions may change over time or if there is a different situation.
That's why there are initial reviews and after 100 mile reviews, which not necessarily come to the same conclusion ;)
In runnig shoe, it could be the Superblast 1+2: Most people love it, some say it is way too hard and it is an uninspired ride and don't want to spend 100-150miles running in a shoe they don't like. Which i totally understand!
That's why those comments of hard vs soft depend so much on the weight of the runner and the speed/cadence, because all together describe how hard the ground is hit with the shoe.
Btw, I never had anything from Nike, so i don't know
Christ im still in my novablast 2s! These look good though
The delicious smell of new shoes!
Thanks Ed, brilliant insight into the 5’s. 🙏🏾👏🏽
I’ve struggled to love my 4’s. But looking to get the Nike Zoom Fly 6 which I think will pair better with my AF3.
Yes the zf6 is a top choice for that.
@ thanks again Ed, always great to have your backing in decision making for shoe choice. 🙏🏾 💯%
I believe Asics modelled the smell on Mole Valley Farmers.
Thank you for the review!!
My pleasure!
Need a Updated "smell" test in 2 weeks time :)
🤢🤣
Love the smell test, and the review! I need to replace my Kayano Lite 3 with another daily, need something for long runs, tempo’s and sprints, would the Novablsst 4 do the trick?
I have the Kayano Lite 3 and the NB4 TR.
The NB4 is faster than the KL3, no question!
Long runs and faster runs also, no problem.
Also strides are ok. Sprints? Real, all out sprints? No. For this you would need a workout shoe.
I mean, you can go all out for the next 400-500m, for sure better than the KL3, but it is not really suitable for that. Unless your 400-500m max effort is not that fast ;)
For real intervall training, maybe even sprints, look for something like the Brooks Hyperion 2 or the Asics Noosa Tri 16.
The Noosa Tri 15 has the old Flythe Foam, feels dead, but is stiff and rolls your foot - exactly what you need for a speedy workout.
Cheap option: the very hard Kinvara 14 (or 15). With this you can sprint! It felt way too hard for me and i have to protect my knees, so I sold them. Ditto the Novablast 3. NB2 is a normal shoe, NB4 is way more stable and a far better ride over all.
I would get a NB4 or a NB4 TR on discount :)
The TR just has a little bit thicker rubber and therefore deeper grooves. Rest of the shoe is the same. +15-20g for the rubber. I take this any day over the regular NB4. I go as fas as saying: if the NB4 TR exist, there is no reason for the regular NB4 to exist - the regular NB4 should be the TR!
Ive said it before and I will say it again....Asics is the brand of the year. Best overall line up of releases for the year.
I hope you will do another annual review this year Edd. Which brands did the best. Who improved the most overall. And who needs to go home and seriously think about what they did lol.
I have to agree. All the models this year have been high quality
Saucony trumps asics for me. I don't like too soft.
Thank you for the review. I am undecided between mizuno neo vista and novablast 5. Can I get your opinion?
Haven’t tried the neo but love these
Great video as always edd. The only thing I don’t look forward to when you cover this brand is the unneeded Yankee pronunciation of A6. It’s asics not A6.
Thanks for watching
Great review Ed!
Glad you enjoyed it
3/3 for a squashy midsole, 2.7/3 for an odd outsole choice that is too soft and therefore will likely have durability issues? Kind of higher than expected points there 🤔 in any case thank you for the review
The midsole is great for a daily shoe. I don’t think durability will be a concern, the issue is that it’s winter now and my routes are covered in wet leaf and debris
The smell test is back.🥳 Yeah!
It’s quite a subtle one
@@EDDBUDThat makes the shoe even more interesting for me. Greetings for a nice Sunday!
Interesting, in my size (US Mens size 9) I'm getting a slightly narrower shoe on the contact patch, by 3-5mm overall...which is one of the major changes in the shoe that makes it work. I'm also getting solid grip on all surfaces wet or dry, the best "blast" outsole I've experienced, absolutely no grip worries. Otherwise, we mostly agree on this shoe overall...Asics starting 2025 strong.
Leaves and wet smooth concrete aren’t great at all with these.
@ Odd… I had no issues with grip. Wet leaves, moss on concrete, bathroom tile sidewalk (something we have here in Taipei), wet asphalt, wet track with standing water, sidewalk in torrential rain…. I did find the outsole very squeaky, like a court shoe.
Great vid and musical interlude Edd. When I had the NovaBlast2 I thought the outsole was woeful, and it ruined my enjoyment of the shoe. Was thinking of trying Novablast again, but seeing your disappointment with the outsole makes me wonder if it's worth it. I'm a big Puma user and PumaGrip is one of the reasons i keep coming back.
May try and rough up the rubber a bit
Maybe pick up a 4 cheap?
Get a Superblast 2 if this is also a right shoe for you :)
I expected a minor update and this update surprised me. My Novablast 3 and 4 have tons of miles left on them so maybe I’ll wait for a trail version to mitigate the outsole issue. What shoe does it resemble as far as energy return from the new foam? Thanks for your thoughts on the latest Novablast.
The new midsole foam is superb
Still haven’t worn out my 4’s. Around 120 miles so far.
Thanks Edd, great review as always so deffo going to try these out.
Fun video suggestion: top 5 shoes for a hate run
Hate run?!
All out 1 miler! :)
@EDDBUD Going for random sprints out of frustration. Am I the only one that does this?
Then probably not made for this wet season. Maybe next spring an option I'll have to keep in mind.
I used to preach about the Novablast to all that would listen! Then I discovered the cheaper, faster and to me the far superior Adizero SL2
This is very different to the last few. Better upper and quality than the sl2
@EDDBUD I have both and I completely agree the novablast 5 feels like a more luxurious sl2
I will buy me a pair for sure !
…and in that colorway.
Wich shoe has the higgest score yet?
Primex strung and Metaspeed sky Paris I think
Fan of NB 1 and 2, Never get into 3 and 4 … this could be the next one
Have you noticed Asics convert the euro sizes to UK sizes slightly differently to other manufacturers. I’d suspect that’s more likely the reason for the ‘long’ shoes rather than the need to size down outside of the uk.
Hope that makes sense
It all of them are long though. The sky Paris is spot on in an 11
I always look at the mm length and then to the size convertion.
Different manufacturers, different translations.
Asics seems to be spot on mm wise, since my longer right foot is 28,4mm and depending on the asics running shoe, i take 285mm (EU 45) or the next size, which is 290mm (EU 46).
Numbus 26, Kayano Lite 3, Superblast 1 etc i have in EU 45 (285mm) ;; Novablast (2-4), Noosa Tri (14-16) and GT2000 (9-12) i have in the next bigger size, EU 46 (which is 290mm).
Tight but ok in EU 45. Nimbus 26 is big enough by far in EU 45. GT2000 is definately too small in EU46! Noosa Tri 16 is even maybe a bit small barefoot in EU 46!
My Novablasts in EU 46 have enough space, so they would probably also be good in EU 45?
My feet are off by more than 1 full EU size, it is more one full UK size!
Left foot is something EU 44 to 44,5 or 27,5cm. (Right one is 28,4cm)
In climbing shoes i use uneven pairs. In running shoes, just in my trail shoes (Speedgoat 5 + Fuji Lite 4) and in the Superblast 1 (becaus i could get the second pair, used for just one run for 130€.
Expensive! In climbing shoes i also kept my eyes open for slightly used pairs for half price. And i also managed to sell the complememtary uneven pairs :)
Would you recommend the Superblast 2, Novalast 5 or Glycerin Max for a third shoe in my current rotation of Ghost Max 2 and Glycerin 21?
Superblast trumps them all
got the 4 only 3 months ago 😂. now I have to get this
Not a fan of that color way, but sounds like another good one.
Will stick to the superblast and my other NB trainers
Probably an odd question...but NB5 or the SB1? I have the original SB (got it discounted ) and they're aging now...not sure I want to spend on the 2.
Hmm still quite different shoes. The sb1 is that bit firmer than the v2
Except…the Invincible lockdown was bloody impossible. This review makes me want to mash up my v4s
No issues here on the invincible. The v3 had issues with some but not me
Seems like a nice upgrade to NB4.
Hi Edd just a thought , why don’t you review some running equipment ?
I do from time to time like tech and things but there’s others out there that specialise in that stuff and I’m short on room right now!
Ah cool , I just think you are an excellent reviewer !! 👍🏼
which is better Adizero EVO SL or this Asics Novablast 5?
No idea about the evo. Haven’t got my hands on it yet
I am half a size down in the Superblast V1. Same size in the Novablast 5?
Yes go for your sb 2 size
very nice i am waiting to releaze
Shouldn’t be too long
Please tell me the midsole feel is close to Novabalst 1…?
It’s the closet to the v1 yet
What shoe would you recommend for someone 6’1 235lbs crossing over from the weight lifting world? I tried the NB4 but didn’t like them I returned them. They felt bottom heavy compared to my Nike invincible 3s
For super cushion the invincible is hard to beat. Maybe examine the Vomero?
I just got the novablast 4 for 87. Worth it??
Yes!!! Really like the 4. Have fun with it.
How is it in comparison to Novablast 3? Skipped Nova 4 because quite a lot of people reported that it lost the fun and peppy ride. Is it back in Nova 5 or still meh?
But more fun and fancy free
I love the 5. I had the 3 and it was ok. The 4 was a huge piece of… too built up, ew. The Novablast 5 is just perfect
It’s great. Wearing it now
My only worry with the Novablast 5 having had the Novablast 3 is the grip having had a fall in the Novablast 3. It seems like that issue still hasn't been addressed?
I still have concerns on the wet grip.
For walking only will you recommend Novablast 5 or Nimbus 26/Cumulus 26?
Nimbus is your shoe
I have foot slapping in the Novablast 3. Did you get foot slapping in the Novablast 5?
Much softer foam and rubber here
HI EDD , could it be a good alternative to the triumph 21 ?
Quite a different shoe. Lighter, nimbler and less padding.
You mentioned it being softer so would you recommend for Marathon training?
Don’t see why not. It’s got a lovely cushion
