This is foster's home for imaginary friends with the cheapest most unimaginative "friends" I've ever seen. I know some really creative kids, kids that made pig dragons and worm knights and so on so I find it hard to believe they put enough effort and care in this film. Yeah you guys mostly nail my thoughts on it. Even if it does have a similar premise as Foster’s, it’s still fun idea, a lot of great movies are derivative of other things and I liked the message of keeping that inner child inside of you & needing someone there to tell you it’s okay in a time of stress and grief. And when the movie is able to find its footing, it can be genuinely sweet, charming, creative, and some moments got me to choke a bit. I thought the girl was really good, even Ryan Reynolds was good in a more subdued role this time, and the designs & VFX on the IFs themselves look great. There’s a great movie in there, but the story is narratively disjointed. If John Krasinski had someone there next to guide him or help tighten the script to flesh out certain elements, it would help make the movie feel more cohesive and bring that emotional impact that he was hoping for. And yeah that twist with Ryan Reynolds was predictable from the beginning. But like you said, it’s harmless, it’s fine, I don’t think it’s as bad as I’ve seen some critics say cause it seems divisive. You can tell Krasinski had a lot of passion put into this, so it’s not cynical or incompetent, it has its heart in the right place, he proves himself between this & the Quiet Place movies that he’s a more than capable director, and I can see why it’s connecting with certain audiences. It has great moments and overall I did mostly enjoy it, but if the script had a clear focus, it could’ve reached its full potential.
