The whole period 76-79 was incredible for reggae music. How about 1977? Exodus (Bob Marley and the Wailers), Two Sevens Clash (Culture), Heart of the Congos (The Congos), East of the River Nile (Augustus Pablo), Rasta Ambassador (U Roy), Equal Rights (Peter Tosh), Police and Thieves (Junior Murvin), Party Time (Heptones), Wolf and Leopards (Dennis Brown), Dry and Heavy (Burning Spear), Mr Isaacs (Gregory Isaacs), Protest (Bunny Wailer), the only thing 1977 lacked was a Gladiators album although they did release ‘Pocket Money’ as a single, definitely up there with the best of all their tracks! 💯

First two on Joe Gibbs Records, last three on (you guessed it) Virgin Records. Burning Spear: Garvey’s Ghost (1976), Man In The Hills (1976), Dry and Heavy (1977), Social Living (1978). All on Island Records. Sneaky mention to Hail H.I.M. which although released in 1980 is the best Burning Spear album (in my opinion of course 😉). The list goes on and on, I haven’t even mentioned some of Lee Perry’s best work from this same period. Truly the golden age of Reggae and in no small part in thanks to Island and Virgin Records 👊😎🦁
1976 I was a 14 year old kid and visited JA with my parents for the first time...seeing Jamaica in it's raw environment was magical and special. Roots reggae was at its peak. When I came back from JA to the UK the summer of 1976 was the hottest and longest ever it's like I'd never left Jamaica...great memories

True... i heard right time back in '76... as a second year, secondary school student in Benin city, the capital of Bendel State (as it was called back then), Nigeria.... blaring from the woofers of a music shop across the street from the college. I was entranced.. 'i need a roof' too was pure magic, by the Mighty Diamonds. Amazing stuff.
The 70s was possibly the greatest decade for reggae music because by the end of the that decade, the modern dancehall era began (1979) with the arrival of Henry "Junjo" Lawes, Barrington Levy, Studio One got a massive revival thanks to Freddie McGregor's "Bobby Babylon"(recorded in '79, released in 1980), Johnny Osbourne with "Truth and Rights" (1979).
Brother you are so right, it was a heartical and rootically year for Consciousness to be lifted up by these great Albums. I was 13 at the time living in Handsworth Birmingham I heard all this great music, every album you mentioned I hold like gold dust in my Roots Reggae Vinyl selection to this day as I would say.. As a past time, i used to scribble some albums on paper year by year from 1970 thru the 80s, assessing which ones were the best of the best (with assistance from critic reviews and opinions of subscribers)....And just hours ago, something pulled me to The Gladiators' Trenchtown Mixup which i listened to, track by track after a year or so.. Reggae Appreciation, I'm beginning to think you and I have a TELEPATHIC relationship😁😁....Great work bro..👍.
Bob Marley broke out with Catch a fire and soon after many great albums followed. Right time- Mighty Diamonds,Reggae Thing- Inner Circle, Third World,Burning Spear-Marcus Garvey,War inna Babylon- Max Romeo.Revolutionaries,Zap Pow,Chalice,Dennis Brown,Peter Tosh, Bunny Livingston, Culture,Heptones,Leroy Smart,Gregory Isaac's,Freddie McGregor were others that come to mind.I forgot to mention The Harder they come soundtrack.I'm sure I've left out some so feel free to add any artists you remember.

I think 1977 was the year of the greatest reggae albums, like, exodus by bob Marley which is the album of the millinium and it has one love which is the song of the millinium. And two sevens crash by culture which entered the world Guinness book of records and Peter tosh Equal rights album which is the best album by peter and one of best albums of all times and many more.
You are correct. I think Culture's "two Sevens Clash" missed it by a year. As it turned out, it was actually "When the seven and the six clash" Ok, I won't quit my day job to pursue a career as a comedian. Oonuh nuh think mi funny? BTW. When was Bunny Wailer's "Black Art man" issued. I'm sure it's on the album. But I had it gold plated and it got covered up. Talk about some serious replacements for Jamaica's National Anthem.
1970’s deffo was the golden era for Roots. Reggae lost its way in the following decades when it went into the nasty and hateful stuff and it’s never been the same since. Bunny Wailer got booed on stage which says all you need to know about how bad this got.
The 70ts best for reggae and a lot more other music in that time. It was a great time in the history of all music.
