Steel pulse - prodigal son & handsworth revolution is simply par excellence as a musical journey from in opening musical introduction through to the songwriting & messages I think only third world 96 degrees album is equally brilliant musically Its a era where reggae music made in analogue showed you just can't beat authentic talented players of instruments expressing themselves musically. Digital replaced analogue and sadly it was computer riddims by the likes of king jammy steely & clevie ,Dave kelly put paid to the need for great musicianship.

lucky you are. My greatest regret is immigrating from my Country two weeks before Midnite arrived there. Their first show was canceled due to Ebola. And for the second show i had already buyed the plane ticket. 😪😪😪😪

Midnite Akae Beka Vaughn The Best of all times
What an amazing accomplishment, I attended many of their performances. They were truly an amazing band. Rest In Power Vaughn. 🥰❤💚💛 Shout out to my ex-husband, Joe Straws, the original bass player.
What's frustrating I can't get the midnite anthology with songs like " he say she say " album which was my favourite ,it's not on I tunes .
I miss Vaughn and the Midnite Band , they were my favorite.

The top 10 list is a master class. As a ivoiran i discover reggae thru Alpha Blondy. My father had the vinyl of JAH GLORY. A Blondy was the first reggae album i listen from side A to sibe B. After i it was Marley. Lucky Dube blow my mind too. Younger i think its was the reborn of Peter tosh. With SOJA i jump in reggae from USA. Groundation, Tribal seeds, JBB , 10 Ft. Ganja Plant etc etc . From the reggae sound of A. Blondy to SOJA my love for Reggae is now a addiction. I have got the reggae mylitis and is incurable

By the end, I must say that this is one of the most important videos you made. I grew up from birth with Bob already but most of these acts above made my Reggae (and Rastafari) journey, and I learned some more things that I didn´t know about them. Eddie Grant, Dr. Alban, Ace Of Base, Leila K, Sweetie Irie, Chichi From Africa and others maximum Raspect!

Some of my favourite British Reggae Musicians, etc, are; Reggae bands, e.g. Aswad, UB40, Steel Pulse, etc. Singers, e.g. Maxi Priest, Sandra Cross, etc. Toasters, e.g. Macka B, Pato Banton, Smiley Culture, Tippa Irie, etc. Singers, Toasters, e.g. Roots Daughters, etc. Sound Systems, e.g. Jah Shaka, Lloyd Coxsone, Fatman, Jah Massigan, etc. Producers, e.g. Mad Professor, etc.

I’m still sad that Lucky was killed. I was in a worldbeat band that had performed two of his songs (Slave, and Remember Me) around the time he was shot, and it was one of the saddest days I can recall. For sure we performed those songs, it just sucked we had to perform them for different reasons. RIP Lucky Dube, Vaughn Benjamin, Astro, and Brian Travers. I’m sure I’ve missed some. Feel free to add on to it.

Thank you so much R.A.S. As always, honorable offering that I appreci-love to the fullest. Rightly so Midnite/Akae Beka as #1. One other detail was the family born land of Antigua. Antigua and St. Croix have a very strong and special genealogical relationship. Antigua of course means ancient and the airport code is that of the original people from central east Africa the ANU. Also Midnite’s song called “High Places of ANU” pays respect to the world renowned sacred site “Mount ANU” aka Greencastle Hill - “ the Stonehenge of The Caribbean”
Majek Fashek deserves a position in this list, he was arguably the greatest from Africa after Alpha Blondy thought he's fame dwindled and Lucky Dube took the front line aven ahead of Blondy...but Majek remains the greatest reggae musician 🇳🇬 Nigeria ever had
Maybe we can do one only for Africa. We have Tiken Jah Fakoly, Senzo amongst a few other noteworthy reggae acts from Africa

Thank you. If Reggae Music is a message like Bob Marley said, then there are 2 things, Reggae the music and the Message. MIDNITE/VAUGHN BENJAMIN/AKAE BEKA has the MESSAGE. Soon or Later the world will know. Like Vaughn said "I don't think you know me" 80+ Albums of deep roots and consciousness and still releasing a message that speaks to our times posthumously!

Great list ! Not to sure about SOJA being on this list. They are not my cup of tea . I really like a guy named Marcus Gad . His band is good and I like his sound. He is French man from the South Pacific.

Keith was 1960's to like early 1970's. I recall him being being some type of a folk singer doing the north coast hotel circuit. Biggest hit was his adaptation of Yellow Bird. Good request, Mogen. RAS, maybe you could tie it up with other performers of this mode, although I cannot think of many Yardie ones. There's the Merrymen of Barbados and the Tradewinds of Guyana. People like the Frats Quintet and Olive Lewin of Ja were straight-up full folk singers and may not fit with Keith Stewart. But it's on you, oh! LOL.

Love this compilation. but I feel Johnny Nash needs a mention too, Growing up in the UK in the 70s I thought it was Bob Marley that was singinging Johnny Nash songs. He also did covers of Jimmy Cliffs "I can see clearly now" that outsold the original. He was American and I have to add that he was such a good looking man. RIP to him

Theres some artists there I did not hnow, it gos to show how much great reggae we dont hear or sometimes do not get to play and I got into it in the beginning of the 70 ts and still finding out theres more and that's not what I have miss. Thank you for the info and work you put in so we can hnow more about this great music, as sometimes the more I learn it feels the less I hnow but in the end I thank god, jar for this gift that keeps giving. Putting Midnite at the top was bold ! I would argue that Steel Pulse and Aswad had a bigger influence. But to each their own, Midnite definitely belongs on the list - mandatory ! Great list overall though - you definitely got the important names in there !

If you are a reggae fan you will agree with the list. In my personal opinion Alpha Blondy should be number 1 and Misty in Roots should be in that list, but this is his list and I respect that. Much love

UK artists and bands have been instrumental in creating new genres in the nineties. Your top ten is correct but there is so much more and so many who have been influential to the birth of other genres. General Levy, Top Cat, Sweetie Irie , Tenor Fly, Troublesome, Glamma Kid. Real underground street level artists who were exceptionally talented. One of the artists in your top ten bought dubplates from one of the artists I've mentioned before the artist you mentioned buss big. The artists I've mentioned were inspirational to the genres of Jungle, UK Garage, Grime, and the artists who came through those genres always states these artists as the artists who influenced them to do music more so than the ones you mentioned. These artists need to be given there flowers too or Reggae won't be given it's flowers as the inspiration for those genres. Just look at Hip Hop. Try telling the Yanks that it comes from Jamaican sound system culture and they come out with all kinds of rubbish to deny it.

@@JohnSmith-us9no Of course, Philip Levi too as he's the only UK MC to have a no 1 in Jamaica. Jah Screechy from Coxsone is the only UK MC to have a UK National Chart no 1. That usually goes over the heads of most music historians but that's a FACT.

Regarding your top 10 list, it was good but I took exception to having SOJA on the list. They’re longevity and popularity as band aside, they’re are so many more artists/bands/groups outside of Jamaica that shine, it’s a stand out ?????? Mark within this list. Wildly misplaced on this top ten list.

In my opinion, I think Majek Fashek looks underrated but deserves to be in the list. After the demise of Bob Marley in 1981, the emergence of Majek Fashek a couple of years back with great songs like Send down the rain, So long, too long, redemption song (cover), Religion is politics was like a revival of Bob Marley's voice but with a different beat which he carved out to be 'pangolo beat' long ago.🤔

This is gonna be controversial but l was expecting UK band The Police to make the top ten. While not all their music output has been reggae and they're usually listed as a post punk or new wave band a lot of their music especially their first 4 albums, and some of their hits like Message ln a Bottle, Roxanne, Walking On The Moon, One World, The Bed's Too Big Without You, Spirits ln A Material World etc were reggae.
Just the humble opinion of a guy from Trinidad who enjoyed the ska and reggae coming out of merry old England in the 80's like Aswad, Third World, Steel Pulse, Maxi, The Police, UB40, Musical Youth, The Beat, Latin Quarter, Madness, FYC, Specials, Tippa lrie, Selectors etc. Still some of the best music l ever heard.

I think the group Groundation out of California deserve an honorable mention. Their "Hebron Gate" album is up there with the best of them.

What criteria are we onto here? Commercial success?.... Interesting list but there's no way Steel Pulse couldn't be no 1 regardless the praises of David Hinds and Duckie Simpson for Midnite. Well I suppose opinions vary .Not a bad list, though...But no Linton Kwesi Johnson, Matumbi while Black slate has never been cited anywhere in your good works...

Well, family, y'all may be upset w/me but I refuse to give some of these groups props based on money, fame or awards- especially the nonBlack/Africana ones. Many awards are given by U.S./UK White owned corporations that frequently miss the mark on genres we created, favoring their own. SOJA's win was lamented by many Jamaicans & Black non J.A. peeps like me across the world because it necessarily overlooked/excluded those whose work actually deserved it. We're not in a meritocracy. I fully think Br. RAS strives to be fair and present us with well-researched work grounded in research. This is my own personal politics. Many of our greats don't get their props because those evaluating their work aren't qualified. Furthermore, as with Hip-Hop, many consumers are outside the "insider" demographic and their buying power talks. So even as I've had UB40 as a guilty pleasure, I'm aware they like other White groups had their success propelled by the rewards given by their own. E.g. Elvis being more famous and wealthy than Chuck Berry or Little Richard. Eminem is a genuinely talented MC, but make him Black and he's not seeing that same success. Soul Pirate as an album title is as close to a self-own and unintentional revelation of self and origin. The Wailers taught me that pirates were evil m-rd-rers, r@pists and gen0ciders so that's a wild title I such a genre. A nickname based on offending Jamaicans in their own home is c0lonizer arrogance. Also it's all well and good to be welcomed into a space as a contributor, it's another to not have substantial work towards one's group to eliminate or minimizing hurt against those victimized by said group. It's how we end up with people giving Chris Blackwell/Whiteworst being given too much credit for groups he knew he was gonna make big money from, whose talent he didnt have and whose ability to create a label came from his family's benefitting by default (at the very least) from enslavement and colonization. I can recognize skill across and within race but will still say though I enjoy "Piove" by Giovannoti, his reggae shouldn't be heralded unless he's actively advocating for the dismantling of antiBlack racism in Italy. 🤷🏿♀️❤💛💚🖤

Half of these artists are unknown to me ..theres no question that Assad Maxi priest and UB40 steel pulse are the most popular..most were 2nd generation British Jamaicans. Arrived in England from the 1940s .maxi priest was Jacob millers family just to add ..all the others I cant comment on but in the reggae of the 80s and 90s they were regularly played UB40 were more pop based and were rarely played by deejays ..il have to listen to these other guys ..good vid
No debate : even though IV only recently discovered "" Midnite"" it was immediately obvious to me that Vaughn Benjamin is the most "" gifted "" non Jamaican Reggae artists!!!!.. which musician of any Jonjoir has written over "" top notch songs "" and released over 70 Albums - and died at 50 years old!?!...RIP. Vaughn Benjamin : you were an Exceptional Prophet.
