Heard Corelli at the Met. He was the most EXCITING tenor I ever heard. When the lights went down and the performance was about to start you could almost FEEL the audience inching forward in their seats in anticipation. The only other singer I associate this with is Birgit Nilson
Purtroppo per noi che siamo ancora qui, sono chi prima chi dopo tuti saliti in cielo. Bastianini (morto nel 1967 a 44 anni), poi Christoff (nel 1993), Corelli (nel 2003). E per ultima anche la Tebaldi ci ha lasciato nel 2004. La Forza del 1958 di Napoli è un documento che purtroppo ci può dare solo un'idea delle emozioni che in teatro trasmettevano Artisti con la A maiuscola. L'interpretazione, la dinamica e la morbidezza negli acuti... Grazie Franco, grazie per averci commosso con la tua voce.
Perché Pavarotti non aveva la voce Adatta alle partiture di Verdi. Donizetti, Puccini d tanto altro. Verdi poco e niente. Ed ha fatto bene. Tanto è vero che ha avuto oltre trent'anni di carriera a livelli a cui pochi hanno ambito. Voci diverse e sui gusti non discuto. Per il resto, averne oggi di Corelli e Pavarotti.

Per La Boheme e L'Elisir d'Amore, per esempio, Pavarotti aveva la voce piu adatta che Corelli. Allora, quando si parla di un tenore spinto... Corelli è, senza dubbia, il megliore di tutta l'historia. E, per me, il megliore tenore di tutti i tempi, ma questa è una cosa personale. Se parliamo dal tenore lirico, abbiamo Pavarotti, Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Gedda, Jussi Björling, Di Stefano, tutti molto importanti e con una grande carriera. Alfredo Kraus era meglio che Pavarotti nell'ultima fase della sua carriera, ha avuto una maggiore longevità, secondo me. Ma Pavarotti è il tenore piu conociuto in tutto il mondo, per questa raggione molta gente dice che lui è il piu grande di tutti i tempi. E non c'é problemma, abbiamo experienze diverse e quello che mi piace a me non deve piacere a tutta la gente. Devo dire che senza Pavarotti non so se avrei scoperto l'opera così presto nella mia vita. Per questo, Pavarotti è molto importante nella mia vita. Complimenti e buon anno.

This is absolutely fantastic singing. By far the best Corelli has ever sang in my personal experience, both in terms of flowing cantilena, & musicality. The phrasing is very very familiar to me, - Franco has obviously spent much time listening to Caruso's version, the only one superior in voice & phrasing to this. Marvelous. I never thought I'd live to hear another tenor come so close to the great Enrico in this aria. If it had been bigger voiced, it could almost have been him.

Thanks for posting this. It's very educational to view these singers from the golden era. Corelli is singing with no tension. Something so rarely seen today in opera due to the way in which singers are taught. Yet it is important to note that this was early on in his career. At any rate, what a wonderful thing to behold. Much can be learned both artistically and vocally.
All there is to say is... "all bow to the king". Never in the history of operarecordings has there been a tenorvoice to match the voice of Franco Corelli.
I first heard this magnificent voice and saw this gorgeous man in 1963. HE IS THE MOST UNDERRATED TENOR OF OUR TIME. Never a scandal, Loretta was always there for him. He was so humble with the great gift God gave him. Primo, Primo Tenore.
You explain his amazing singing much better than I could. This audience's reaction is a complete surprise to me, I saw him many times (in the USA), and the audiences adored him.

i have often thought that , the peiod fron the late 1940,s to the mid 1970,s produced some of the finest opera singers that graced any stage or theatre ! one thing is absolutly certain Corelli was never underrated !
Such a shame that we so so many of Corelli's later recording on UA-cam and so few of the early ones. In his recordings from the 70's he is amazing in the late 50's early 60's he was a class above even that!

Thanks for posting this. It's very educational to view these singers from the golden era. Corelli is singing with no tension. Something so rarely seen today in opera due to the way in which singers are taught. Yet it is important to note that this was early on in his career. At any rate, what a wonderful thing to behold. Much can be learned both artistically and vocally.

I first heard this magnificent voice and saw this gorgeous man in 1963. HE IS THE MOST UNDERRATED TENOR OF OUR TIME. Never a scandal, Loretta was always there for him. He was so humble with the great gift God gave him. Primo, Primo Tenore.
I don't understand: how is he the most underrated tenor? For me and millions he is the greatest tenor ever. His voice, his looks? No-one like him.

Come sarebbe bello poter aver tanti video come questo, o magari a colori, delle recite di quel tempo. E invece pochissime registrazioni sfocate e in bianco e nero. A quel tempo c'era tanta pellicola per fare innumerevoli filmetti da quattro soldi, ma non ce n'era per registrare giganti come Callas o Corelli. Che cosa inconcepibile.

Such a shame that we so so many of Corelli's later recording on UA-cam and so few of the early ones.
In his recordings from the 70's he is amazing in the late 50's early 60's he was a class above even that!
