Stephen you are very eloquent guy and know how to pass important knowledge to students , every video is not just a drill but like an interesting conversation with you thank you for all the cool videos
@Howyamossy i didnt mean competitor i meant in making no gi as complex as gi. He is the Socrates of No Gi . Marcelo is the best no gi practitioner but he didnt make no gi viable like eddie did.
If he grabs both knees, wrap your arms around both of his arms and lock your hands under his arms. Then drop and straighten your legs forward to break his grips.
@DeFy18 That's not being a dick. I agree. But for colder climates it still works well for self defense. But Jiu Jitsu rocks whether your training for sport or no gi for mma, etc! Thanks Mr. Kesting!
I enjoy your vids, i think the “baseball grip” on the wrist works better to strip a collar grip and its less fiddly too “as taught by Marcelo Garcia” :)
Stephan, thank you very much. I am a white belt and already have sore ribs from the amount of time I spend pinned (my right side). This is fundamental and needs to be learnt before anything else. I am constantly passed within an instant when they grab my pants, at the ankle or the knee. I will practise this for automation before trying anything else. Like the poster below, what happens when the grab both knees? Just do the same with on side?
Gi is very important in a real life situation. I mean lets say that a guy has a big coat on or a hoodie on the street. Those grips and chokes that you learned with Gi will come in handy. Even a long sleeve shirt can be useful in a real fight if you practice with the Gi. I need more Gi practice myself - but trust me it is useful.
@HDMovieScenes A chop is simply that, a chop. If it is done "specifically" to prevent or escape your opponent's grip, it should be fine. Obviously you can't just whack your opponent across the arm for any other reason.
@DeFy18 I don't think you understand what I originally said. When I moved to the no gi school, I fought them no gi, which practices.... no gi. I dominated most of them while not wearing a gi. I didn't roll with them with a gi on. It's not just me that says this. Most BJJ ppl would tell you gi training is better than no gi training.
I've seen the same move done before and so I figured it wasn't a strike, but wasn't sure why it didn't count as one. Is it solely because of how little space it travels through like you pointed out, or is there another principle at work here too? Thanks!
I am just a white belt, but I have had luck when this happens I grab his lapel, then post the other hand and shoot back both legs at the same time to end up on my toes still holding the lapel. It stripped his grips, and I was able to re-guard. I'd be curious to hear response from belts.
i noticed at the end your belt was loose, he had a hard time grabbing it, what do you do if the belt came off during match do you grab pants or gi. sorry if this question sounds dumb i was just curious
I agree with you buddy, Gi is way better, nogi IMO is sloppy to get crisp technique and real bjj you need a Gi, you have to watch out for Gi chokes but once you take the gi off your defense is crazy cuz u dont gotta watchout for the cloth chokes.
@DeFy18 Just going off by your comments, I see that you don't have much experience in the sport. When you say "No gi really is all about position..." Well the truth is gi grappling is more about position than no gi. No gi is more about scrambling than gi jujitsu, as it is easier to get out without the gi. In gi bjj, it's more about position as it is harder to escape once you're in an inferior position. That's why gi guys do so well in no gi, they're better at escaping after gi training.
@GooseHinson going off 2 schools and probably people who dont practice it at the no gi as much as a gi school is a bad example. No gi really is all about position instead of grips, the best no gi guy in the business is eddie bravo, very inventive stuff on positioning and positions possible from this position and then positions that are available after doing that one. Gi is great but for current day BJJ, where most of it is for MMA, gi is not really learning unless already into it.
Stephen I love your videos but I notice sometimes you're pretty rough on your demonstration partners when you show grip breaking. I know one guy got hurt and it looked like Ritchie was gripping way looser on the second grip break demo. I really love the technique, but I know that shit hurts and can even injure fingers. Seems like you could demo the technique without hitting the grip break so hard. Regardless, great videos really. Thanks for putting the time and effort into these. I've learned a ton and appreciate every one of them.
@DeFy18 By the way, literally all no gi champions train in the gi, and tells others to do so. While Eddie Bravo defeated Royler Gracie, Eddie was never a champion in his weight class.
@DeFy18 This is classic. Some guy watches a BJJ vid and starts ejaculating his thoughts. Ok, here it comes: 1. Some people want to train with the gi, why dont you leave them alone? 2. Most of the best no gi grapplers also train with the gi. Why? Because it makes you smarter. 3. What do people wear in the streets? Yes! Jeans and coats, unless its really hot. 4. In which way is no gi more diverse? No gi has probably about 90% less possible techniques than BJJ (Not meaning that its easier to learn)
eddie bravo had one lucky win and all of a sudden he become a god of grappling overnight but they forget what happened to him when he come up against leo vieira in his next match......
@DeFy18 The best NoGi guy in the world is Marcelo Garcia by a country mile. Eddie Bravo is brilliant in his own way and I'm a fan of his too, but he is most definitely not the best NoGi grappler in the world.
Under hooks. Of course, that would be their own ignorance of grappling should they do that anyway. OR if you wanna be a douchebag like me, Double Armbar their ass and make them pay ^_^
He changed my approach on what my mentality should be when I roll around and I don't even use a gi. Great teacher

Love your videos very nice looks like it would be very effective gonna give this a go tonight at class …
Awesome. Thanks for the knowledge
If he grabs both knees, wrap your arms around both of his arms and lock your hands under his arms. Then drop and straighten your legs forward to break his grips.
Wouldn't they easily fall foward on to a full mount (with your legs straightened)?
thank you for this info.. much! i have to work butterfly extra hard and it seems to be the hardest open guard
@DeFy18 That's not being a dick. I agree. But for colder climates it still works well for self defense. But Jiu Jitsu rocks whether your training for sport or no gi for mma, etc!

Thank you for this video. It's going to help me.
Strip one grip with cross grip and chop technique and immediately put foot on hip. Works for me but he's the expert.
love it thank you can't wait to practice this

Wonderful can’t wait to try it

sometimes you get grab using your two hands at the same time , what to do in that situation?
bite but cover it with your head
Awesome Video. Great advice.
really helpful, thanks stephan
not a strike because he hits then keeps it there, its only considered a strike if you hit then release opposed to hit an apply pressure.
Thanks for the great advice

I'll try this. But what happens if he grabs both knees at the same time?

simple play spider and lasso guard
This is as good as gold, thank you very much!
good question...
Great advice, but what do you do when your opponent grabs you with both hands at the same time?
I like that rip strip pull... easy to remember
i noticed at the end your belt was loose, he had a hard time grabbing it, what do you do if the belt came off during match do you grab pants or gi. sorry if this question sounds dumb i was just curious
Is there a video for if they have grips with both hands?
I agree with you buddy, Gi is way better, nogi IMO is sloppy to get crisp technique and real bjj you need a Gi, you have to watch out for Gi chokes but once you take the gi off your defense is crazy cuz u dont gotta watchout for the cloth chokes.
So its: The grip.....the rip.....and the strip?
And then the bleeps.....the sweeps.....and the creeps? 🤔
@GooseHinson thanks for that my friend always told me to train gi becauseit'll help me in no gi i never understood why but now i do so thanks
Is that legal on competition ?
does this allways work?
