Quite a good essay about one of my favorite novels and film adaptations. A Harvard graduate steeped in counterinsurgency warfare theory, movie Kurtz sees himself as a moral agent and force for civilization, “a poet-warrior in the classic sense.” The problem with that notion (and the realization that drives Kurtz to madness) is simply this: there is no such thing as a poet-warrior.
The worst thing a human can do is to give in to the temptation of playing God when circumstances allow it. By doing that (e.g., warmongering, colonizing, slavery), he will not only start creating a hell on earth, but, without realizing it, also slowly turn himself into a devil of devils. That is what Kurtz is all about: - If you want to find out what a man is to the bottom, give him power. . Robert G. Ingersoll
The way I interpreted heart of darkness. I saw Kurts, motivated not by a lust for wealth. Though maybe it started that way. But by a love of the near divine power he could lord over the natives.
Also after the USO show Willard makes a comment about Kurtz hates the 4 star clowns who's the gonna give the whole circus away. Kurtz says men with a willingness to do everything he says and they only thing that his men need is hot foot, cold beer, and Rock and Roll. Willard says Charlie's R&R is extra Rat meat the only way the war ends for the VC is death or victory. Kurtz doesn't feel the Americans hearts are in it. Kilgore's men worship him but they all want to go home. The more they made it like home the more everyone missed it. One of Kurtz's men sends a letter telling his wife to sell the house and the kids because I'm never coming back Kurtz soldiers feelings r now DEATH or VICTORY

Two of the greatest artistic works out of the West in the last two centuries.
