Succession’s Ending is about Misogyny, Actually
Considering that I wrote the title for this video before its script, I’ve spent a long time determining exactly why I instinctively tacked that adverb on at the end and I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason it’s there, the reason I wanted to add it, subconsciously, is not because anyone has been making a counterpoint to it, but because the truth of it was not predictable until the very closing moments of Succession and I think that is part of what makes HBO’s drama a preeminent pinnacle of modern writing in television.

Squid Game and Parasite Have the Same Message, and It’s This...

It would be no exaggeration to say that in the last two years alone, Korean storytelling has gone through something of a renaissance, at the very least in international appeal. This is of course part of the wider ‘Korean wave’ that has seen the country’s pop culture become increasingly integrated into that of Western audiences since the early 90s and more so than ever today. But when Parasite h...
The Plot of The Matrix Doesn’t Make Sense - Here’s Why
Переглядів 7633 роки тому
When studio execs at Warner Brothers first saw the concept storyboard for The Matrix, they knew that the sibling directors, the Wachowskis, were onto something unlike anything they had ever seen before. Even though studio executives tend to have a less than stellar track record when it comes to the opinions of fans, when it came to the genesis of the much loved, and in places, maligned franchis...
Apocalypse Now vs. Heart of Darkness
Переглядів 15 тис.3 роки тому
For cinephiles, Apocalypse Now means different things to different people: the ultimate war epic, a humorous parody, a disturbing reflection on the violence in our species, a case study in cinema that comes in wildly overbudget. In this video, I am going to dissect and identify the key similarities and differences between the lauded literary work and the modern adaptation that director Francis ...
How Attack on Titan Became an International Phenomenon
Переглядів 2303 роки тому
When I think about just how big Attack on Titan has become as a series, I think back to 2017 and when I first saw the unmistakable blue and silver wings of the Scout Regiment insignia on someone’s satchel. That was the moment I knew that in the West as well as its home nation, the anime was on its way toward cementing itself as the most influential of the decade. It is my belief that by the rel...
HBO’s Chernobyl - When the Past is a Horror we Cannot Escape
Переглядів 1843 роки тому
When I think of HBO’s Chernobyl, I think of Jonah and the Whale. The bible story comes to mind, I think, because it is a story about venturing somewhere you should never rightly go, where it would be insane to go, but where if you didn’t you would die anyway. The series is of course framed as a dramatization of the real-life events that led up to and followed on from the worst nuclear disaster ...
The Final Fantasy VII Remake Ended SEVENTEEN YEARS of Disappointment and Mediocrity
Переглядів 1513 роки тому
Seventeen years. That is the span of time between the release of Final Fantasy X-2, and the release of the Final Fantasy VII Remake. I have calculated that span of time because that is the exact number of years that Square Enix took to release to a Final Fantasy game that, at least narratively, was better than okay, and I have come to terms with the fact that I will probably never quite get ove...

INSIDE: The Power of a Silent Narrative
Переглядів 1373 роки тому
How do you tell a story without uttering a word? When asked this question many will think back to silent movies, but even silent movies had frames that would be used as stand ins for actual dialogue. Silent movies weren’t silent because they were intended to be; they were silent because of the limitations in technology and filmmaking at the time. It was Charlie Chaplin who saw around those limi...

I have fond memories of coming home after a long day at Sixth Form in late 2005 and logging in to Xbox Live, which was actually a novelty to me, having so long been a Nintendo and PlayStation fan and having only just bought a second hand Xbox. Why The Boys is ESSENTIAL in the Age of Superhero Cinema
Переглядів 564 роки тому
I am obliged to open this video with an admission: I don’t read comic books. In fact, comic book culture is actually still very niche in the UK. That’s not to say that culturally, comic book heroes aren’t adored in the United Kingdom, but rather that British people tend to connect with superhero movies rather than comic books themselves. And that’s probably why I had never heard of The Boys bef...
Neon Genesis Evangelion - WTF did I just watch?

That is, until I finished at 1am last night, End of Evangelion. My immediat...
Divisive Storytelling in The Last of Us Part II

There is surely no better place to start than by talking about this scene. [scene] This was the moment that we all knew, for better or worse, that Part II wasn’t going to be what we expected. A make-or-break moment for just about every fan of the series. Judging by the reactions I’ve seen online, for the most part it was certainly more break than make. How Ocarina of Time Changed My Life

When reflecting on my childhood, I consider that there was a particular decision my parents made that had a profound influence on the way I would come to view stories, the fantasy genre, and video games as a story-telling medium in general. That decision, prior to Christmas 1999, was whether to buy my brother and I a PlayStation or a Nintendo 64. A largely inconsequential decision, as far as th...

Great video! I got very lucky for my first time watching, it was through online recommendation like most people but before there was much buzz around it. So I was able to go in with no expectations and no spoilers, watching at night and alone, definitely made it one of the most scary / creepy movies ever for me and I really liked it. I think the youtube popularity has been a bit double-edged, because on one hand it's probably the biggest source of exposure the film has and the way most people heard about it. But it also meant that people went in thinking "this is the scariest movie ever" and already knowing things beforehand. This kills the immersion and makes the slow and subtle style just feel boring to many people.

I FINALLY watched this last night, after seeing it on so many “scariest ever” lists. It has everything I love in a psychological horror- naturalistic performances, slow burn, introspection, liminal spaces, subtlety, mounting dread, but…. Didn’t scare me in the slightest. Not even THAT scene. I’m disappointed not that the film didn’t do its job, but that so many others got something from it I didn’t. It’s like the Grateful Dead - millions of die hard fans and their music does almost nothing for me, though I WANT it to. Just for the record, Best and scariest contemporary films for me are The VVitch and Hereditary. Both got way under my skin and stayed there for quite awhile.

Lake Mungo has got to be the most overrated movie of the 21st century. There is absolutely nothing scary about it. I don't even see how it qualifies as a horror movie. Maybe if it had turned out that the mother had drowned her, it would have been worth watching. But it wasn't.

I don't get this movie. It's a series of filmed hoaxes perpetuated by the family, capstoned by the daughter's own FAKE video tape she made prior to taking her own life... when then her family uses to perpetuate more hoaxes. It didn't make me scared or sad, just really very angry. "Don't think, feel. Logic is the death of horror." Is that it, is that the problem?

I'm Australian so I saw this not long after it came out on DVD at a sleepover where everyone was asleep in the room except for me and one other girl who loves horror movies but was absolutely terrified of them. The original marketing had a very Blair Witch 'based on a true story' bent to it which enhanced the fear factor considerably. One of the greatest movie watching experiences of my life.

I find that true crime cases are much scarier than something that came out of someone's imagination. And I don't mean film recreations of true crime but the cases themselves. For example there was the case of a Japanese women who traveled to Romania only to disappear from the airport the same night. What happened to her is straight out of your worse nightmares but it probably couldn't be made into a film.

Everyone talks about this movie like it is one of the scariest movies out there… Ive even heard people put it on par with like Hereditary! I CANNOT understand… Im a HUUUUGE horror movie fan. By far my favorite genre. There are no major/popular horror movies (since 1990) that i haven’t seen. I’ve watched this movie twice now, and i just don’t get it. The second time was because i hear people rave about how great it is! And i even like the found footage genre! Love the Paranormal Activity series, love Blair Witch, etc… This movie just bores the crap outta me! Anyone else super underwhelmed by this???

this movie filled me with so much dread. the ending scene with the crossover with alice’s mothers and alice’s interviews were gut wrenching. and then the end credits. she was there all along i know it wasn’t discussed but i truly feel like the brother had something to do with her death. he was the last one to see her. he kinda stalked her in a way and he fabricated the ghost sightings. something to think about.

Personally, the scariest part is not their discovering Alice's ghost has been with them all along, but the fact that after learning of Alice's ghost trying to communicate with them, they turned their backs against her (as seen in the last picture taken in front of the house) and decided to move on. Even after they moved out of the house, Alice's ghost still remains, trapped in this endless limbo of wanting her family to see her and understand her truth, while being invisible to their eyes and not being able to utter a single word for all of eternity. In Life and in Death, she was never truly Seen.

I'll add another layer to this onion for you: The film breaks the fourth wall (the film had actually been subtly breaking the fourth wall all throughout) and now the memory of this fake ghost of Alice is haunting us, the audience. The final images in the film are meant to haunt us, and embed this nightmare of isolation into our heads. The film has been telegraphing since the opening of the vintage fake ghost photography that the ghosts in this film are not real. But yet we are still haunted by it. Taken this way, the film elevates itself to become a commentary on the medium of film itself. We've been cursed by a lie.

Holy crap this movie unsettled the crap out of me! The last footage scene was really something. If a figure like that was floating towards me in the middle of the night. I would die of a heart attack. This movie makes paranormal activity movie look like a children's film. It's not your traditional scary film. The movie feels so real which is why it's so creepy. All the build up, atmosphere, and the final scare or climax is just pitch perfect horror. Even james wan or Robert eggers should take notes.

So much so that since my parents passed away a couple of years ago I haven’t been able to watch it. At all. In fact, I had to stop watching your video bc the images are too much for me.
