There wasn't the "real" germany. There were two german states, the BRD did claim to be the legal successor to the german Reich, but the DDR and the BRD essentially had the same claim. The BRD just got more international recognition.

i know a guy who had an accident in his trabant, being rammed frontaly. As was custom in east germany, at least one of them had to be drunk. The Trabant usually doesnt fair very well when it comes to frontal accidents, because the driver gets impaled by the handlebar, but he survived because the seats were so badly made that it broke in half and saved him from being impaled.
