I use the Purolator BOSS filter on my 1986 Yugo GV car. I'm just that convinced it's a great top-of-the-line filter and worth spending the money for. Now I use it with Castrol GTX 10w-40 conventional oil and it work perfect for me in my old car that is a high compression engine. My mechanic use to tell me not to switch to synthetic because it will smoke and cause leakage.
Now I still use Fram for my car, but using their Fuel Filters. I try to find the older ones that were made in the USA and Israel instead of China. Sadly, they discontinued them altogether years ago, but I felt they were great for my car and try to stock up on them before they disappear completely of the internet.

Now that MANN+HUMMEL is the parent company of both Purolator and WIX, and both are made in their respective North Carolina plants, I am willing to bet they will soon be one in the same. Since WIX standardized on the silicone ADBV, don't be surprised if the red Purolators start showing up with this! WIX from O'Reilly and Purolator from Advance. No more orange-can-of-death!

    • @JA-rn5qv
      @JA-rn5qv Рік тому

Yeah Fram dropped the metal screen from the Ultra line because it's no longer needed since they switched to a blended media for the Ultra line which offers greater media rigidity than the previous full synthetic media. The new blended media increased the filtration rate at the lower end of 8 micron size which is actually significant since that's where the particulate range starts that are associated with metal wear. I believe the Titanium line may still have the wire backing since that line is meant for extreme requirements and higher flow demands.

In your opinion, which filter has the lowest flow restriction? I have a 97 Caravan that is very sensitive to oil flow restriction and if I just use a generic filter it starves the upper end enough that the lifters tick pretty badly. For now I've been using the Fram HP3 which is actually a racing filter and changing the oil every 3k - it shouldnt make a difference but it does, even though I have good oil pressure. I just got the vehicle so I've been running seafoam though it to clean out the oil passages but its going to take time. Thanks!

It doesn't matter much when the oil pump gives out on you because the holes maximize pressure up to that point to get the equal volume flow. So you might see the same volume but the pump takes a beating and wearing out. Eventually there might be lower flow that will kill the engine. Look at the difference between these filters and the Racing filters, the holes are larger, The End! That's why I will use FRAM Ultra Synthetic from now on. Also to make you aware of the process of safely changing your oil. Always check the filters you use for metal shavings, check that the thread is clean wipe as much of it as possible, they are build by machines and you will always find metal shavings in a new filter. Clean it up and save yourself an engine.

When referring to particle sizes in regards to oil filters, it is important to realize exactly how small the particles being discussed really are. Then, we can discuss the filtration effects of the filters in question in regards to engine life. There is a misconception when it comes to oil filters, that the smaller the micron rating the better the filter. Some companies rate their filter as a “5 micron” filter, which means the filter will catch particles microns in size with at least 50% efficiency. Let’s put a 5 micron particle in perspective. 1 micron is .001mm (or .00003937 inch), so 5 micron is .005mm (.00019685 inch). The tolerances in your engine will be no than 2.5 thousandths of an inch (.0025”). So, 2.5 thousands of an inch, which is equal to a 63.5 micron particle. A 5 micron particle is smaller than a human red blood cell, and too small to see with the naked eye. So how can a particle that size cause damage to your engine?
Next, let’s consider the purpose of an oil filter bypass valve. A bypass valve opens when the inlet side of the filter gets too restrictive. This can happen when the engine is cold and the viscosity of the oil is high (due to the weight of the oil), but this primarily happens when the filter media gets too restrictive or clogged. This is done to keep catastrophic engine failure from occurring; dirty oil is better than no oil. The lower the pressure relief rating, the sooner the valve allows unfiltered oil to enter your system. The last factor that contributes to the bypass opening is the amount (surface area) of the filter media used in the filter. A filter that has a high surface area is going to hold more contaminant and promote good oil flow for a longer period of time, so the bypass will take longer to open.
If the filter you use is 95% efficient at 5 microns it is going to remove more contaminants than a filter that is 3% efficient at 5 microns. The question is, how long will it take for those filters to load up with contaminant and enter bypass? The answer is simple, the more efficient filter will load up sooner, but at what expense? Oil flow is necessary to lubricate rotating parts, prevent engine failure, and help keep the engine cooler, plus again dirty oil flow is better than starving the engine of oil completely (the theory behind the filter bypass). Clean oil is best for long engine life, and a filter that can promote clean oil flow consistently for a longer period of time is a key component of any healthy engine.
When you are talking about filtration, whether it be oil or air, there is a balancing act that has to be performed to ensure your engine gets the protection it needs while giving your engine the most flow possible. Unfortunately, when the focus is an oil filter that is catching extremely small particles at a high percentage, the tradeoff is flow rate. This put the consumer in a “Catch-22” situation. Do you use a filter with the most efficient media at the smallest particle rating, and have the bypass open letting unfiltered oil through the system? Or do you have a filter that does not filter as small a particle size, but filters more of the oil for a longer period of time? K&N filters are designed to give you the balance of oil flow and filtration. Of course, we would like to say we have the most efficient filter at the smallest micron range, but the fact is we are not going to sacrifice oil flow or the quality of filtration by having a high efficiency filter that operates in bypass mode for 80% percent of its life. I know for me personally it’s a simple decision, the small particle filtration does not mean anything to me since we are talking about particles I can’t see, especially if there is a remote possibility of unfiltered oil touching my bearing surfaces causing premature wear and eventual engine failure.
When you are comparing filters, to make the most informed decision possible, look at the following things (with the least amount of emphasis on micron rating): Filtration efficiency, Filter surface area, bypass setting.
The KN-171 filter has a nominal micron rating of 25, meaning it will capture 25 micron particles with at least 50% efficiency. The filtration efficiency of the KN-171 at 5 microns is 3%. The KN-171 also has 165 sq.in. of filter area partially the reason it flows 25% better than the OE, paired with a bypass that opens at 14psi. The Harley Davidson filter 95.8% efficient at 5 micron and 98.6% at 25 micron, it also has 63 sq.in. of media and a bypass that opens at 10psi. This means the Harley filter will run in bypass mode for a significant portion of its installed life, whereas the K&N will allow oil to flow through the filter for a longer period of time. In my personal opinion, this makes the K&N filter the clear choice.
Here is a side by side to the amount of media inside of a K&N filter and your typical OEM filter (I don't think it is Harley's current one but look cool)

    • @scotts.7662

Change your oil every 5000 miles and it matters little what brand filter or oil you use provided the oil is the right grade. Synthetic oil does flow much better in sub freezing cold. In summer I do not think it matters much. Yes the more expensive heavier filters even yes Fram will filter better. Just do not let the oil get very black. Change your coolant every 24 months and transmission fluid every 3 or 4 years never flush and you should be good. Change that fuel filter often. 30000 miles. Cheers!

Yes you are right and wring but as long as you keep oil change intervals frequent, nothing much matters. Even cheap filters and oils from good brands are more than enough but i use synthetic oil and oil filter so that i can extend oil change interval. If i do the maths, two oil changes with cheap oil and filter costs as much as good quality filter and synthetic oil minus the time to do the second oip change. After this winter i am gonna try to use same filter for two oil changes i.e. 12k miles combined, i think its reasonable with modern day oil, filter and engine.

Thanks! The Boss is the new top of the line however the P One was rated to the smallest particulate b/c they would tend to clog extended chage intervals hence the 10k rating.
In the forums a letter was copied recommending to not use the P One on motorcycles as bikes operate at lower pressures & the P one will represent a larger restriction + the bypass valve PSI on bike is like 3 psi lower on the bike specific ones. Lots of folks use the P One tho & another study still recommended the P One for bikes. I would agree if you use top synthetics.
I always used the P One in my cars/trucks. But as mentioned before I chose the less restrictive Boss for my XV950 Bolt b/c it flows better, is thicker (it sits in front of motor exposed to pebbles from frt tire) & it's nice & black.

What many videos do not show is how Motorcraft Filters are one of only few companies using a thread end bypass, Wix, Napa, and Royal Purple all had outstanding design and when they got bought out, the designs changed and in my opinion they are a cheap design. No longer made with highest quality. Royal Purple Filters, Napa Gold and Wix have all changed from a nice steel base plate with thread end bypass, Silicone ADBV, evenly spaced holes and steel coil spring, solid canister casing. It would be interesting comparison how they have changed. Now Purolator is better than those. I currently use Motorcraft although I know they use a leaf spring and the Purolator is a decent design, the Boss is nice and it shows filter media is better than Motorcraft. Not a fan of dome end bypass. Many new oil filters displayed in videos don't even come close to what RP and Napa Wix used to be years ago. The new ACDelco E core is an embarrassment. Why do these companies think they can change a proven design and still have a loyal following for a cheaper product. They must think customers don't notice. I expected K and N to be higher quality, the dome end bypass design is cheap and does not look built with durability.

    You
have not mentioned the importance of where the bypass valve is
located in the oil filter element !!! If this valve is located on the
reverse side of element, then during a cold start (when the oil is
thick and this valve is activated), the oil passes outside the filter
element, picks up some dirt that has accumulated on outside filter
surface, and again the dirty oil goes through the bypass valve !!!
But, if the bypass valve is located immediately at the inlet, then
the oil ( when the bypass valve is activated ) DOES NOT pass along
the "dirty" side of the filter, and all the dirt
accumulated on the outside of the filter element remains there
    forever !!!
    It would be
nice if the filter manufacturers indicated in the specifications
where the bypass valve in the filter is structurally located !!!

Purolator Boss is advertised as a 15,000 mile filter. Puroilator One a 10,000 mile filter. Classic a 5,000 mile filter. Tech is probably good for a little more. Low end filters by any manufacturer are basically no-name filter equivalents. All of them are good for 5,000. Lots of people hack that widely sold brand in the orange box featured in that ubiquitous box store. It's as good as any other. Stay within the design specifications of whatever product you are using and you will be okay.

FilterKingz they have been known to fail and tear at the wide pleats. There are many documented cases on the Bob is the oil guy website. The pressure becomes too much at times and will tear the weak filter media. It tears at the weakest point which ends up being the one wide pleat right before where the media is joined together. All the pressure is going against one small section rather then multiple where the pleats are together more.

There was a case where a guy with a 5.0 F150 had his filter tear and it went though the engine. Clogged the small passages and the engine died. Ford had to replace his engine. 40 microns are you sure about that that's large that's almost like a small grain of sand

    • @JA-rn5qv
      @JA-rn5qv Рік тому

Yup the Distance Plus is rated at 99@40 microns which is how they were able to achieve the dirt holding capacity of that particular filter but it kinda brings in to question why would someone chose a filter for the purpose of holding "a lot of dirt" when that filter is actually letting a lot of that dirt get right through the filter media? lol. Kinda defeats the purpose. Even the Boss would be a much better choice with it's 99%@25 microns but for that price range a person would be even better off going with the Fram Ultra Synthetic which is rated at 99@20 microns but when tested actually does even better than it's rating. Bosch's justification for the Distance Plus is how much dirt it can hold and because of that it doesn't matter that it lets through particulate size contaminants that are associated with metal wear. The thing is unless a person is driving hundreds of miles every day through a high intensity desert dust storm, there's absolutely no way that an oil filter is going to accumulate anywhere near the amount of dirt that Bosch claims the DP can hold. Cheap filters have a capacity of around 7 grams particulate holding capacity and higher end filters between 10 to 18 grams. If a filter gets anywhere near the full holding capacity during a normal oil change interval then there is something SEVERELY wrong with that vehicle and that owner has MUCH more to worry about than the actual oil filter because that engine is already on the verge of complete failure! So to sum it up, the Bosch DP makes no sense whatsoever when all factors are considered and is nothing more that a gimmick.
