  • Jet lag is the price I pay for some good parts of life, like flying to Spain’s Costa del Sol to ride Ducati’s pretty-much-all-new Diavel 1260S. And it was a very good part, because Spain has very good roads, and the Diavel 1260S is a very good motorcycle.
    Yeah, I said it: an unqualified very good motorcycle, at least based on about 200 miles of riding on smooth, winding roads. It’s fast, it’s easy to ride, it looks good and works as a package.

    I just recently bought a 2020 Diavel 1260S so I will throw some thoughts in here for those considering this bike. First, I also own a 2011 Ducati Multistrada 1200S Touring (MTS), which I have modified over the years, and I absolutely love. The MTS is definitely a Ducati you should test ride as part of any consideration on a Ducati purchase. Upright seating position, all-day comfortable, great on the twistys, and absolutely flies. Now get on the Diavel. The Diavel takes a bit to get used to. So did the MTS frankly, especially if you're not used to the kind of power a Ducati throws at you in "sport" mode it is a little intimidating at first. The Diavel is no exception. The riding difference really is two fold: the 240 back tire and lack of a windscreen is the biggest difference in riding experience between the two, generally speaking, power wise they are about the same in practical application, and seating position is not that different. Now lets talk "usable power". I ride my MTS at 90+ mph all the time and have had it up over 140 mph numerous times (with ease BTW). The Diavel isn't that bike. It really pulls through the revs up to about 110 mph before the wind blast is ridicules. It really is an off the line type of bike with "usable speeds" below 80, whereas the MTS excels in 3rd gear through 5th, you go from 45-50 mph in 3rd to well over 120 in the flick of the wrist effortlessly and comfortably. The Diavel flies too, don't get me wrong, but the way the bike is geared, your seating position, and lack of wind protection, it isn't a top end, highway centric bike. Not that it should be, I'm just saying. You get more of a "hanging on for dear life" kinda feel when letting the Diavel loose. It took about a hundred miles on the Diavel to really get the feel for it, especially the way it kind of rolls into a tight corner. It will drag the pegs if you are pushing too hard. On the MTS not so much. Once you get comfortable on the Diavel though it is a very fun bike to cruise around on for a few hours, and of course looks bad ass (people do stop and stare at it). It really just comes down to taste and riding style. If you're a day tripper or like to trailer your bike to a riding location then the Diavel fits that bill, obviously so would the Multistrada. But if you doing a weekender where there is weather expected, the MTS is the only way to go. Personally, I am very fortunate to own both, and I have been all through the Alps with Edelweiss on the 2015 1260 MTS Grandtourismo, so I am a little partial (obviously). The Diavel is a great pick for someone who wants a balls out muscle cruiser with emphasis leaning toward very "spirited" riding. The Diavel is not a Harley type of laidback cruiser. Do not make that mistake. The old lady will be flat on her back, lying in the street the 1st time you launch it! ;) The MTS is a better all around bike, in my opinion, it really is a great street bike with a lot more "usable" power, and lets not forget it won "Best Standard" for 2011 from Cycle World. Its like owning a Ford Shelby GT Mustang vs a Ferrari for comparison. Nothing wrong with either, but very different rides, in a good way. My 2 cents.

    Thank you for posting it. I did own a 2015 Diavel but sold it due to family being scared. I miss it yes and the traction control did save my bacon lots of times from low siding at low speeds due to the roads in Alaska. I'm in Texas now and hoping to get another soon but still mindful as the power on them is very great compared to one's I road before. I can't imagine the power being increased that much more.

  • @Bhg265
    @Bhg265 5 років тому +13

    I like the review. I don't care about specs, in fact I hate when a reviewer wastes minutes of time spewing facts I can read in 10 seconds. Give me good video quality and a few nuances about the bike and that's good enough.
    A truly good review would show different sized people on the bike, talk about how the suspension behaves with different sized folks, the limits of the adjustability, any little issues that popped up (I did it sputter out ever), does the seat have a good shape, does it slope you forward if you harden the shock, can you move side to side easy, how is the fueling with specificity (not just good/bad, really where does it want to launch at in first and how significant of a turn on the throttle will produce a lurch), etc. The factual stuff you can't read about in a brochure, that you'd otherwise have to test ride to find out (and perhaps not even then for stuff like suspension nuance).
    But I've yet to see a review go into that sort of thing, so again, if the video quality is good then it's more or less the same as everything else.

  • @MrSlowestD16
    @MrSlowestD16 5 років тому +22

    Everybody in the comments section is bitching about the reviewer but I think the reviewer did a perfectly fine job. I don't care to hear the reviewer read off the spec sheet that any idiot can do in 20 seconds, that's not a review to me, that's reading a website.
    I love the diavel, did like 45 minutes of riding on one and absolutely loved it. Enhancements to a beautiful platform like that are always appreciated, especially the motor changes. The price tag though, to me, is the huge turn-off about this bike. I just can't justify it for something like this. Why should I buy this over a VMax?

    • @suburbanhobbyist2752
      @suburbanhobbyist2752 4 роки тому +1

      Why should you buy it over a VMax?? Well, I mean assuming you don't really want or need the extra power and torque the Vmax makes (and honestly with how much lighter the Diavel is I'm not sure the extra power would make it faster), what you get with the Diavel is uncompromising style, fit and finish and ride quality. Basically, you would be riding a piece of functional art vs simply a machine with lots of power. Also, the Diavel is over 100 lbs lighter. Really, I think it comes down to the price someone is willing to pay for style.

    2:24 if the Ducati doesn’t have something like an LTE chip to have data access and also doesn’t connect to your WiFi when you’re home … the only way Ducati would get that information is by storing the details on the bike and retrieving it with a cable during a service interval. During that service the data would be pulled off the bike, then separately uploaded to Ducati by a computer in the service station.
    Computers aren’t magic. 👍

    • @suburbanhobbyist2752
      @suburbanhobbyist2752 4 роки тому

      Agreed. This is NOT a cruiser. If you want a Ducati cruiser, they make one, the XDiavel. This is a super naked/standard muscle/modern sport etc etc. Everyone seems obsessed (or maybe it's just the moto journalists) with putting a bike in a segment but how many times do you hear a journalist makes this comment "This bike doesn't really fit into any of the classic segments...". All the time. That is because the segments are sort of useful but can't cover all the various types of bikes out there these days. Things have changed but they can't let it go.

      As a Diavel owner I absolutely love riding the Diavel and 90% my next bike will be another Diavel. It's a bike with maximum grin factor and so enjoyable to ride. When I talk to other owners they feel exactly the same. So, you are talking through your ass!

      @@aussiesam01 Hi sam, never owned a diavel but I'm considering a gen 2 stealth but heard and read so many bad reliability issues is this the case?
      Thanks

      @@R3RLEE Hi, Lee. I still have my Diavel and still love it, 4 years and counting. A Kawasaki dealer I spoke to last week questioned the service costs, when we worked out what it actually cost due to the long intervals he said "fair enough". I've only had a wheel bearing go on mine in the last 4 years, no other issues, and it's now done 48k kms.
      It's no exaggeration to say that this bike will make you grin from ear to ear every time you ride it. Every time I talk to a Diavel owner they all say the same.
      Can you get a test ride on one? Good luck anyhow, post here when you get something, I'd be interested to hear what you decide to buy.

    LAME REVIEW
    Jesus did the bike ever go above idle. For GODs sake after your racing carrier (if he ever had one) did they surgically remove your nutts. You did Motorcycle.com nor Ducati any favors. Damn a 2 minute video with some basic charts and a few specs would give me a better ideal if I would prefer one of these over a V Max ….
    That's 11:32 I'll never get back.

      No one buys a Harley or Ducati to save money or to be as reliable as a Honda. If I'm buying a Ducati I want it to be a high maintenance supermodel. Why else would I fork over that much money for the valve service intervals?

    • @nicksokolis6343

      That was true 20 years ago. Modern Ducatis are super reliable. Checkout the owner forums and the 9000 mile service intervals.

      Not true

      I don’t have to check the forums. I can check my garage. My 2012 Streetfighter S is 7500 mile. The current scramblers are 7500 mile. Oh. Yes, I know the multi and others are 15,000 mile. My point was more about the price of those service intervals. Over the years I could have bought a nice car for all those valve service prices. Honestly, Reliability is not even a consideration when I’m buying a Ducati. I want a good looking fast bike with top shelf components. I’m under no illusions that it’s as reliable as a Honda. If I want to do something stupid where reliability really counts like ride across kazakhstan I probably want a KLR 650 that I can fill to the brim with bad gas and on it goes and then fix it with a stone axe. I’m pretty sure I can get my Ducati towed and swipe a credit card and get it fixed. Reliability is not everything as with it comes compromises. Motocross bike service schedules suggest piston replacement every 50 hours because they have a few teaspoons of oil in them. That makes me love them more, not less. Honestly, I miss the much worse reliability days when Ducati wasn’t owned by Audi. The bikes had a lot more soul back in those days. I’m a motorcycle rider if I wanted to save money or be comfortable all the time I wouldn’t be one. I’d buy a Honda Civic with roadside assistance.
