The segment from 220-228 minutes tells the tale. She needs a timing chain when the crank mark dances around like that. Just a little nugget I mined 40 some years ago....
@@RetroRebuild Easy enough to check. The hard part is pulling the damper off the crank so you can get to the timing cover. Once that's off, you can tell right away. Check the inside of the cover for rub marks from the chain itself. If you find any, that's all you need to know. One side of the chain should be free of slack and the other side shouldn't move more than 6mm or so when pushed in with your thumb midway between the sprockets. I learned this in 1976 with a 1974 Dodge Charger that was running? like your Viva when it refused to start and I had to have it towed to a shop. New chain got it running but it took 12 valves and 16 pushrods to get it right....
I had exactly the same problem when I fitted electronic to my mgb. Your starter is fine, it’s fighting the advanced spark. I had to retard my distributor quite a bit to bring it back to the correct setting. Once you’ve set it up you’ll be pleased with the results. Don’t forget to disconnect the vacuum advance when timing it up. Keep up the work, really enjoy your videos 👍.
Yep. I reckon that's it. I fitted a similar unit to my Stag, and the timing had altered from the points set-up. The base-plate must be slightly different. try re-timing it. 👍
AC/DC in the title ! That had me watching straight away ! Less is more in terms of work won't be long till Hell's Bells your on the road back in black!
Wondered why my Sunday felt it was missing something, then better late than never, the video appears. Laid here, willing that engine to start. Sending positive thoughts. lol
Pressure cooked veg? It WILL be windy🤣 Couldn't roll across a modern bonnet like Bodie and Doyle! Can't remember the last time I used my strobe light 😒Great stuff 🤙🤙
As others have said, your timing is out, starter is fine, I had the same when I fitted a sparkright electronic ignition back in the 70s (anyone remember those) and was considerably bigger lol, I remember when I got my first timing light, I was concentrating so much on the timing marks that the cable got caught in the fan, snatched it out of my hand spun it around and smashed into a million pieces, I hadn't had it five minutes , happy days lol. great vid. Forgot to say, nice compressor our wife treated you to Steve.
Timing is way too advanced now you have the Accuspark kit in place. Turn the dissy backwards a touch and it'll run. Your starter is fine, it's just fighting the firing strokes because the spark is too early :)
Yeah,as David says , too far advanced on the timing , turn the distributor in the direction that the rotor turns a little at a time , when you get it started time it with the timing light 👍
Sunday is now complete. Keep at it sir. Was never really too sure on how to use a timing gun, as I've never used one, so thank you. Really enjoy these.
A lot of people have said that their ignition was faulty out of the pack so could be that, but I'll get the viva running well on points for now and revisit electronic ignition down the line 👍
I had a 1968 HB Viva SL90 as it got older I had problems with the starter turning slowly. I replaced the starter bearings they were very worn and it was better. Still not fully happy I ran an extra earth cable straight from the battery negative to the engine I think I used one of the gearbox mounting bolts, and this restored full power to the starter. I assumed the rusting bodywork was causing a poor earth path. Good luck with the project.
I was hoping you'd say someone was baking stottie cakes! I used to make oversized sandwiches with them... makes you feel like a little kid trying to handle a normal sized bun 🤣🤣
Liking the electronic ignition, that easy to change 👍🏻🙂, good effort. Your right, these projects are never finished, but it’s a noble cause. Keep up the good work Chap.
Starter motor is fine. The reason it sounds like it’s struggling is the timing is out. Probably 180 degrees. Rotor arm needs to be pointing to number one plug when piston is at top dead centre. You may or may not understand this but it’s definitely timing the engine is turning over but not easily as the timing is out.
Compressor is a cracker 👌 mine is that loud i need to wear ear defenders running it in the garage 😂 keep doing what you do, look forward to next vid. i see plenty useful advice in the comments tonight 👍🙂
Timing seemed ok ish when on points but not steady. My Viva was like that and cause was wear in the dizzy drive shaft causing wobble on the points and uneven timing - or maybe was it worn lobes on the dizzy- too long ago to remember properly! This back in 1980s and mechanic suggested I fit a Luminition Electronic unit which was not affected by the worn dizzy. You want to set the timing with vacuum advance disconnected and at low idle speed as load and speed were what they used before the days of ECU mapping to vary the timing for different engine needs. Not familiar with the electronic ignition kit you have - but it looks neat. Could it be the magnet is on 180 degrees out thus knocking the timing way out? Good luck and I'm sure you'll have cracked it by next video.
@G M that's the way mate👍, it's amazing how having the right tools makes a job easier, 20 years ago my tool kit consisted of a socket set, screwdrivers and a butter knife 😆
100 percent timing. You have to adjust it for electronic ignition. Personally I hate the things. "Upgraded" to electronic on my Allegro. 1st set lasted 800 miles before failing without warning. Second set were faulty out the box. 3 set went whilst I was 80 miles from home in the dark and pooring rain. Left me standed. Would never fit again. Points and condensers just work fine.
I did try adjusting it a little bit, I'm going to do the static timing in the next vid and see exactly how far I have to adjust it. Sounds like you had a nightmare with yours, I'm going to carry a spare one in the glove box! 😀👍
years ago, i rbuilt the top end of my cortinas pinto engine, when i put it back together (including putting distributor back in) it sounded like this ie fighting against the compression. Two weeks i faffed on with it, then my mate comes round with our metal work teaher, he adjusts the distributor and bang it fires straight up - think its just a timing issue. Anyway very jealous of that compressor.
I wish I lived near you, we'd have that up and running in no time. I was a Hometune Franchisee, later Tune-Up for over 30 years and these Vauxhall engines have all kinds of little foibles we learned to overcome. I think the carburettor is your main problem. Before you fitted tge electronic ignition it sounded like the cold start enrichment wasn't working properly. The other thing to check is whether your ignition system has a ballasted feed and if so whether the bypass circuit is working. I see you've replaced the coil. Is it the correct one. A ballast coil has a different primary resistance and fitting a standard coil will result in a poorer spark. Just needs methodical testing with a multimeter to establish this.
No probs mate, I'm learning by trial and error, sounds like a cool job you had, yes I did have a ballast coil on it, the normal one is back on now, if you click on the icon you can go to the play list and all the videos are in order there 👍
I tend to static time and mark it on the disi, does the Vauxhall only have dynamic marks, use the gun to look at advance, give all the plugs a good clean, check though the wiring, maybe have a look when its dark to see any sort circuit sparking, proper old school me, is the disi worn. I have tried an accuspark, followed the youtube fitting and it chafed due to putting it behind the block, the roter harm is pretty close to the wiring, its also not good to just leave the ignition on, it damages the accuspark. My land rover has lumintion electronic, still working after 40 years and my MGB has 321 which is brilliant except for its cost, all the best with the Viva, you will get t going next session.

Nice one bud check the timing again turn the distributor round while you fire it up think that's what's causing the viva not to start when it's hunting like that. 👍
Happy birthday Steve, wonder if my missus would buy me a compressor for my birthday, I doubt she knows what one is lol 🤣🤣. I was praying she would start for you, sounds like a timing issue to me mate , keep at it though you'll get there 💯👍
It sounds just like timing to me as well, when you put the electronic timing black collar on did it have a timing mark on it? Great video keep them coming.
Mistake I should quantify the above. You may never be able to start the car, as per your video. The issues at the end . It sounds like the engine is not turning smoothly. That is the the only way i can describe it. But it is as per 12:01
And she continues to fight..! 😂 Hi Steve,it does sound starter related , a little on the lazy side maybe..? Two steps forward and one step back haha .. I’m sure you’ll overcome it , she’s definitely come a long way ..looking forward to next weeks as always mate ❤👍🏻
Hello Steve another great video,it should start better with the electric contact part, try turning the distributor what the manual says or near to it.Happy Birthday to you on the day of working on the car.
At a guess, and by the sound of it I would say the timing is advanced a bit mate, sounds like it's trying to fire on the compression stroke but not so much it's firing through the inlet / carb all the time.
Great video as the nor, sorry I was will for the car to start for you but It would not start. But it will keep doing what your doing and you will get there.
Starter is fine Mate, Take off the king lead and crank her over…. Starter should return to normal ! If so it’s definitely the timing too far advanced. Also check the magnet is fitted in the right direction, and the right way up…. Happy birthday Mate, cracking video as always! Keep up the good work 👍
Happy Birthday mate 🎉 Timing is too far advanced, need to knock it back a bit. Also pull the advance pipe off when checking the timing but with the electronic ignition you might need to set it at a happy medium. Also... Pull the cap off and rock the bottom pulley with a spanner, watch the rotor arm as you rock pulley back and forth, the rotor arm should move in sync with the spanner movements, any delay or lag in the arm could indicate a stretched worn timing chain! Plugs are just fowled with lack of use, wouldn't worry for now, check them again after a few hundred miles 👍
It is far to advanced.. I know it is set for +9 but forward it to TDC. The electronic might be a fraction different from spark fire point. Whow's to say it is the original bottom pully. DON'T LEAVE THE COIL PERMAMANT LIVE OR IT WILL BURN OUT. What I think you need to do.. Take no1 plug out and put a screwdriver in the plughole and turn the engine to find the very top as high as the piston gets. Check the pully mark for TDC. Turn it another 180 dgs and check again. It all could be 180 dgs out. I put all engines to TDC to start from unknown and let warm up a bit then advance by feel and sound. When the engine starts to slow and sound rougher.. Turn the distributor back a slight bit. Rev it and if it bogs before reving you might want to move the distributor forward a bit more. Try again. Once you feel happy then try the strobe gun.
Hi Steve , for got to ask , is the Coil compatible with the Manufacturers Electronic ignition your fitting , some need a ballast resistor or a coil with a different voltage output to Match the Electronic ignition your fitting, good Luck hope you get it sorted.🤞
Just out of interest have you done the tappets? might be worth checking and yes the starter sounds lazy, also maybe get a an air filter on it she might be pulling in too much air but i suspect timing is advanced hence the puffs of smoke from the carb.
Timing isn't right as you know, personally id order new bushes for alternator and starter ( aim sure you and your dad could and fit them clean them both up) or get them checked over. my starter used to stick so i had to put in 2nd gear and rock car or hit starter with a long piece of wood lol. After charge battery sounded flat, has it gone or starter packed up. If you take starter out spray Bendix with brake cleaner. Spray clean earths? starter circuit also, this made a difference. Personally i would remove both starter/alternator and get them checked over, before them pack up ( in the cold or rain usually lol) starter is a bit awkward, best time to do it.
Thank you for the info mate. I'll be looking onto stuff in the next vid. I did try rocking it in 2nd gear and knocking the starter but didn't film it 👍
So frustrating, the non-starting noises reminded my of my dad's Ford Anglia back in the 1960s. I agree with the comments saying you should turn the distributor cap until you get a start, then adjust. Once did this with a friend's VW microbus which made a further 600 km before needing help from a real mechanic... by which time it was at least back in a country where the driver spoke the language...
First thing, when you set the timing the first time you had the car running at a fast rpm, should be set at normal idle with vacuum advance pipe disconnected. Secondly, the accuspark /powerspark units always necessitate re adjustment of the timing. As many have said, currently, it's way too advanced. Starter is OK. Personally I don't use those units, I've had reliability issues with more than one of them but others have had years of trouble free motoring. (maybe I was unlucky) I now run points with a sparkrite SX4000, not had a minute's trouble with it, starts first time every time, points last for absolutely ages (not touched mine in 3 years and many thousands of miles) not trying to sell you one just very happy with mine on both Victor FDs
Loving the dad jokes! Your starter is likely fine but the ignition is too advanced so it is firing and pushing the piston down before it reaches the top. This is backed up by the backfire form the carb at 10:23. However at the end of the video it is turning over very slowly. Is the battery new (I cant remember)? Maybe check you have some meaty earth cables as well to handle the cranking current. All the best
It does sound like your timing is too advanced, it is spiting back through the carb which indicates a timing problem, did you disconnect the vacuum advance when setting up with the timing gun? Keep up the good work and the humour, look forward to a new video each week .
Would say it's probably timing the starter sounds worn-out i would connect the red wire straight to fuse box after she finely starts my chevette a modified engine 1260 set up giving out 80 bhp red wire to fuse box cheers mate 👍
So no setting the air gap with this setup, can you not set a light up to catch when the spark is made to get basic timing. Getting there, slow but sure.
Hello my friend, your timing is too advanced, if you watch your video while you're trying to start it, it's back firing through the carb. Retard the ignition, getting it running and when it's warm with the air filter if possible, then try to time it up. Then the next day see if the engine will start, if it doesn't retard the ignition again and try to get a sweet spot and see if it runs well when it's hot. If it does then just leave the ignition as it is if not then you'll have to find a compromise between the two.
I have been thinking about checking the timing when you put a distributor back in the engine, first of all make sure you have the rotor arm to no1 ht on the inside of the cap, check out this video on timing with a test light, it should be enough to get it started, ua-cam.com/video/FbkugcWXlgY/v-deo.html
@@RetroRebuild I'd go back to the points setup first, see if it runs and get the engine up to temperature then try the electronic kit again, it's not unknown for these kits to be faulty, starter sounds okay the "stalling" is the cylinder firing too early before tdc.

Plugs are just fowled with lack of use, wouldn't worry for now, check them again after a few hundred miles 👍
Thank you mate! Thanks for the info, I'll be checking out the timing more in the next vid 👍
What he said, saves me typing. 😉 Go back to basics and set the static timing first. 👍
Thank you for the info mate, I will see if I can get her running in the next vid 👍
Happy birthday mine was on Friday i didn't get as good prezzies 🤣
Thank you mate! Happy birthday for Friday, hope you had a good one 👍
Viva HC my first car ( 72 K-reg) Anyone that keeps them going deserves a like and a sub!! Duly done!
Thanks mate, welcome aboard 👍
Hi Steve , for got to ask , is the Coil compatible with the Manufacturers Electronic ignition your fitting , some need a ballast resistor or a coil with a different voltage output to Match the Electronic ignition your fitting, good Luck hope you get it sorted.🤞
I think so mate, its a 12 volt ballast coil, I'll look into it more in the next vid 👍
👍
Just out of interest have you done the tappets? might be worth checking and yes the starter sounds lazy, also maybe get a an air filter on it she might be pulling in too much air but i suspect timing is advanced hence the puffs of smoke from the carb.
No I haven't done the tappets yet mate. Thanks for the info, more investigation needed 👍
Electronic ingintions always broke down later on down the line ,changed a few back to condenser and points
🤣 sounds like great memories! I'll be checking out the timing more in the next vid 👍
Thanks for the info mate! I'll check out that sparkrite 👍
Thank you mate! Yeah the battery is pretty new 👍
Hi there lad. It sounds like it's firing to early. Great vid s always.
Thanks mate, I'll be looking into it in the next vid 👍
It does sound like your timing is too advanced, it is spiting back through the carb which indicates a timing problem, did you disconnect the vacuum advance when setting up with the timing gun?
Keep up the good work and the humour, look forward to a new video each week .
Thank you mate! All signs seem to be pointing at the timing, thanks for the info mate 👍
Would say it's probably timing the starter sounds worn-out i would connect the red wire straight to fuse box after she finely starts my chevette a modified engine 1260 set up giving out 80 bhp red wire to fuse box cheers mate 👍
Cheers mate, hopefully get to the bottom of it in the next vid 👍
So no setting the air gap with this setup, can you not set a light up to catch when the spark is made to get basic timing. Getting there, slow but sure.
No mate, there is nothing adjustable on it. I was thinking the air gap was too big on it. More investigation needed 👍
Canny video. I’ve just fitted electronic ignition to my nova today. It tried to start it yet 😂
Thank you mate! I noticed you had on your instagram, good luck with it! 👍
Sounds like a timing problem with it not turning over properly. Check your firing order / leads etc and set it static on number 1 just before TDC
Thanks mate, will do 👍
Bless You !!!
HC 1256/ high compresstion 4,5 degress between to timing marks 9 degrees she pinnck .
Long time since I’ve done any points x
Reduce the spark plug gaps to 1.00mm and try again.
They are set at 20 thou 👍
Hello my friend, your timing is too advanced, if you watch your video while you're trying to start it, it's back firing through the carb. Retard the ignition, getting it running and when it's warm with the air filter if possible, then try to time it up. Then the next day see if the engine will start, if it doesn't retard the ignition again and try to get a sweet spot and see if it runs well when it's hot. If it does then just leave the ignition as it is if not then you'll have to find a compromise between the two.
Thanks for the info mate, yeah I'll be looking into the timing more in the next vid 👍
😃
I have been thinking about checking the timing when you put a distributor back in the engine, first of all make sure you have the rotor arm to no1 ht on the inside of the cap, check out this video on timing with a test light, it should be enough to get it started, ua-cam.com/video/FbkugcWXlgY/v-deo.html
Thanks mate, I'll check out that vid when I'm on my break at work 👍
Sounds like timing out to me
V-HOx all Viva PMSL..
🤣👍
I reckon your 180 degrese out
I'll be checking it out in the next vid 👍
That sounds about 30 degrees too far advanced. Loosen the distributor and rotate it anti clockwise about 1/8 of a turn and try again
Thanks mate, I'll be looking into it more in the next vid 👍
Can't add much here, as timing and all that was never my thing. These other guys will set you straight. Get this right and she'll fly.
Lets see if we can get her started in the next vid, cheers mate 👍
Sounds like you’re timing is too far advanced making the starter work too hard. Back it off a bit and try again.
I'll be checking it out in the next vid, thanks mate 👍
Timing to far advanced
It’s not the starter it’s too far advanced
that starter doesn't sound to good
I'll check it out more in the next vid 👍
Timing, I would say, is along way out. It's kicking back. It was running with the old points so why not put them back in?
I may be putting them back in to sort the problem in the next vid.Cheers mate 👍
@@RetroRebuild I'd go back to the points setup first, see if it runs and get the engine up to temperature then try the electronic kit again, it's not unknown for these kits to be faulty, starter sounds okay the "stalling" is the cylinder firing too early before tdc.
