With diverse indigenous, African, and European roots, Havana’s culture and architecture reflect Cuba’s complex history of conquest, slavery, liberation, and revolution. Chosen for its strategic location on the island’s northwestern coast, in the early sixteenth century, Havana grew into the largest port in Spain’s Caribbean colonies.
The original layout of Habana Vieja-Old Havana-is still intact. Building ordinances in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries preserved the city’s architectural integrity. Wrought-iron gates, internal courtyards, and stone colonnades adorn the buildings of its five main plazas.
Among some 900 surrounding historic structures, a few highlights include the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, one of the oldest existing forts in the Americas, the eighteenth-century Catedral de La Habana on the plaza by the same name, and the Museo de la Ciudad, housed in a baroque palace on Havana's original town square.
Even with international recognition, the work of preserving the historic city center remains ongoing.
Visitors from around the world flock to Cuba for its pristine beaches, exciting nightlife, and a fascinating, blended cultural heritage of art, music, and design.
Traveling to Cuba is much easier for U.S. citizens than it used to be, but check the State Department website for any current advisory notices.

Havana's culture and architecture reflect Cuba's complex history of conquest, slavery, liberation, and revolution. What intrigues you the most about this city?
The cooperation between people. Busses stopped in the middle of the street just to pick up old women, and people on board the bus helped them up the stairs. Small things like that is wonderful to see.
That Cubans have resilience
Beautiful place with full of historical values and stories. Definitely adding this to my must-visit list. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.
Beautiful location! Love the history.
Wishing you a lovely day.
As a Cuban-Amarican, this makes me smile.

Havana oo nana
The narrarator says that Havana's culture and architecture reflects Cuba's complex history of conquest, slavery, liberation and revolution. Actually, the word "revolution" should be exchanged for "tyranny" since the so-called "revolution" has led to a stalinist dictatorship that has squelched every human right immagineable. Also, at the beginning of Cuba's modern history, after the "conquest" why forcus on "slavery?" What we had was the founding of Cuba by the host society which was Spanish. Slaves were brought in by Cuba's creole class that needed laborers. I'm not trying to make light of the suffering of slaves, but that isn't what identified the colonial period. In that period, you had the creation of Cuba's population with migrations from Spain, France and other parts of Europe. This would have been the nucleus of Cuba's society.
Mason and Woods have been here before
Edward Kenway as well.
👍👏🤝
Socialism beauty one day I have too go there my country is close to Cuba Dominican Republic.

Revolution? What about genocide?
C'mon National Geographic! - You couldn't find a DECENT Narrator who didn't sound like a Sorority Girl from the University of Iowa?! - and her Spanish pronunciation is Just AWFUL!

I've been to Havana. The people are rude to tourist and the city is in disrepair.
I don't blame them we're Americans we have done and continue doing bad stuff. Yeah they do have a lot of bad infrastructure once again blame it on the U.S
I did not see any rude people when I visited. I traveled alone and managed.
@@pablocabrera4455 No, it's not America's fault if the people are rude. Cuba is in a disasterous state because of the regime, because castro who recieved three times as much money from the U.S.S.R as the US gave all of Europe under the Marshall Plan let Cuba fall apart. He invested all of the money in creating the largest army in Latin America and exporting revolution all over the world. If you were to go in a time machine and see Havana before 1959, it was a pristine city, unlike the slum that it has become today.
Annoying Narrator
