- Trees move. They’ve been slowly migrating to new habitats since the last ice age. But these days, they’re having trouble keeping up with climate change, leaving park agencies and forest managers with tough decisions. The Verge Science team went into the woods with an ecophysiologist - and her shotgun - to learn how and why trees migrate, and why it matters.

Do you think we should help trees migrate or is the risk of invasive species too great?
Consider the following:
a. While we did not come from a Garden Of Eden, we should make Gardens Of Eden wherever we go. (Existent beings need a beneficial environment to exist in).
b. But, not only here on this Earth, but on the Moon, Mars and elsewhere by following simple, continuous improvement methods, so that life itself from this Earth, continues on beyond this Earth.
c. See the following copy and pastes from my files after this post.
Our national parks are wildlife sanctuaries. Why shouldn't they perform the same function for fauna and flora?
One thing is certain; nature is undaunted. Here in Michigan most roadside drainage ditch stands of cattails have already been replaced by the invasive species from Egypt; Fragmites (papyrus reeds). The "hot dogs on a stick" have been replaced by tall stands topped with feathery seed sprays (like a head of wheat). Not sure how they got from Egypt to Michigan but they obviously didn't need any help migrating!
I have noticed large swaths of forest alongside of our highways featuring nothing but dead native trees over the past decade. Whether these sites are mass die offs due to disease, natural competition, or environmental causes should be investigated.
Water generation on the Moon and/or Mars:
a. Bombard a crater on the Moon and/or Mars with protons, (a proton being a basic Hydrogen nucleus).
b. It might attach to any oxygen in the soil, and make a Hydroxide, (HO or OH).
c. Further attachment of a Hydrogen proton to the Hydroxide, and water (H2O) could potentially be generated.
d. Further generation of water molecules (H2O) and those water molecules might bind with other water molecules and make a larger drop of water.
e. Many drops of water could eventually fill up a crater.
* But, how to generate protons on the Moon and/or Mars ?????
Generate protons on the Moon and/or Mars:
a. Bring Hydrogen gas (a molecule of Hydrogen gas being 2 protons and 2 electrons), to the Moon and/or Mars.
b. Ionize the Hydrogen gas removing one of the electrons (left with 2 protons and 1 electron as an ionized molecule and a 'free' electron).
c. The ionized Hydrogen gas is injected into the soil on the Moon and/or Mars, to possibly have the Hydrogen proton without it's electron acting like just the Hydrogen proton above. The Hydrogen proton with it's electron in the ionized gas is acting more like a carrier of the Hydrogen proton without it's electron.
Of course also then, the 2 Hydrogen protons with only 1 electron of the ionized Hydrogen gas would only need 1 oxygen atom and 1 electron (the electron possibly being pulled from the soil) to make water (H2O).
d. The 'free' electron generated by the ionization process could either be routed to a capacitor and/or battery of the unit and/or grounded back to the soil of the Moon and/or Mars.
Maybe before moving tree species, there should be computer modeling first. So that the rate of invasiveness can be minimized.
We should just stop emitting greenhouse gases like Jessica Hellmann suggests but the chances of that happening as next to nothing unfortunately 😔

Yeah. It's really only america where the response to "I can reach these leafes, they're too far up" is "I'll just shoot them with my shotgun" instead of for example using a slingshot.
@@togamid Im not trying to be rude or condescending but I don’t think you understand just how difficult it is to accurately and effectively shoot a slingshot

"Shotgun sampling" is a way catchier-sounding name than it should be.
Sounds like a method of statistical analysis. In a way-it is!
I'mma use this for my thesis.
Reminds me of shotgun sequencing, an actual DNA sequencing method.
From the title and thumbnail I fully expected her threatening the tree to move faster.
Whoever is in charge of art direction deserves a raise

the title sounds straight out of the onion
edit its legit, get ready to bow down to our leafy overlords
Hey, i remember it was different before than it is now, what was the original again?
I honestly clicked on it because even though I didn't think it was the onion, it made me think of the onion and I had to click it.
This gives a whole new meaning to the saying "make like a tree and leaf".
Oh, she's a legit scientist. The gun thing is just America being America
Lol I’m sure scientists do the same thing all of the world.
@@TheHilariousGoldenChariot I could imagine that the first thing a European scientist would come up with is a pair of clippers on a very long pole.
That would also make for a highly unusual gun license application. The department would probably search for any way to do it without a gun.
@Nature Taco It would be much more difficult to get a shotgun for science in other countries.
@Nature Taco People attribute things to America do to their culture, not because it is actually American.
US gun culture is well known, solutions that use guns in an seemingly unconventional way(At first glance) are usually attributed to America. That doesn’t mean that it is literally the American thing to do, but culturally it is the American thing to do. There is no point arguing if it is literally American.
We use air rifles in heavily regulated areas. Thank you. 😊

In the end: "we have to stop emitting greenhouse gases."
The fact you are using electricity to watch this means that most likely in some way gasses where emitted to produce that electricity
@@drjoriv Yes, but that's better than someone just commenting distrustful of climate change. But people who only watch video about games emit more greenhouse gases. I recommend that you comment the same on the game channel.
@@muhammadmalikali1241 Did I say I was distrustful about it? I am not. Climate change is real. What I don't like like is the people like you comment about fixing climate change without realizing that you and I are both part of the problem. It is not as simple as saying we should stop gas emissions. Have you ever wondered were your electricity comes from? Does it comes from renewable sources?
@@drjoriv Okay, so this is kind of a paradox. Just to find out about “what is climate change” requires the carbon footprint from smartphone. But indeed, just switching to renewable sources requires a sizable carbon footprint. But eventually renewable energy will be available to everyone.
@@drjoriv Renewable energy sources are a government’s job not a person’s job. People shouldn’t have to reduce the quality of their life while we wait for renewable energy. We should demand it now, or at least within the next five years when it could be built.
I sometimes shoot down tree branches with my Slingshots when there is a fishing lure and line entangled in them.
It’s funny that I was reading paper this morning about assisted migration...
That might be a sign 🪧- so to speak
It’s a threat
She doesn't really shoot them to understand, she shoots them in order to sample them. Diagnosing the leaves is what's helping her to understand how the trees migrate.
My uncle, who lives in southern Illinois, started getting an influx of brown recluse spiders about 5-6 years ago. He said he's never seen them before, but now his area is almost infested with them, and it's because they've been having warmer weather in general. They've been migrating north.
These women are doing fantastic work. Humans have been managing the "natural" environment for millennia.
Those graphics are amazing @Verge Science , the graphics and design team did a great job.

@@jaedonwallace6434 exactly. At least this method is actually implemented in real life
In order to preserve nature, I believe that we have to recognize that nature is inherently dynamic. These are not museum artifacts to be always kept how they once were, it’s alive and changing. The preservation has to acknowledge that it won’t and can’t be how it used to be, and if anything has to change quicker if it’s to survive the artificial conditions imposed on it by all human activities.
The shotgun scientist is so damn cool.
At first I thought it was an Onion video. Then I remembered they stopped doing these in 2015.

Trees + Migrate? Title doesn't make any sense but my God was this interesting
That shotgun looks like a weatherby element 12ga. Those are pretty nice guns if you don’t need reliability all the time and need less weight.
One step closer to understanding how the tropical coconuts migrated to Mercia in the Holy Grail.
The gun makes sense to me, it would likely be difficult, time consuming and harmful to the ecosystem to bring out a ladder and pole saw or pruning saw. I just don’t understand why she chose a shotgun.
The leaf stems are a pretty small target at any range. Shotguns provide shot density that other firearms can't.
Shotguns shoot something like a small could of small pellets or "shot". This makes it much easier to hit small, moving targets like branches and leaves. These small pellets also loose velocity and energy pretty quickly meaning they have a pretty short range. Were you to shoot into the air with a centerfire rifle or handgun, the bullet could travel over a mile and still be potentially lethal.
@@gebeme11 I didn’t really think about velocity, that makes a lot of sense.
Now I want to become a scientist

We have always “assisted” plants and trees..... but now instead of profit and food being the motivating factor it can be conservation.
I have not once in my life heard any refer to farming as assisting plants until now.
At last writers got it right.
"Human induced climate change"
When youre in the woods and the DOOM music kicks in.
I like how it's called 'shotgun sampling' not because they choose trees to sample in a wide area but instead because they use a literal shotgun
"Assisted relocation" is a more colloquial term for "managed relocation?" Because "managed" is too technical a term for those not familiar with such specialized jargon to understand? It's so comforting to know that we have such brilliant scientific minds keeping us safe from the climate monster.
So that's where all the shotgun ammo went. Friggen tree skeet shootin.
The centrist perfection
Interesting
The Ents! The Ents are attacking Isengard! They'll get there in....50 years or so.
Instead of transplanting trees to assist them in migrating (which yeah can be heavy and difficult) why not collect seeds that they have dropped and redistribute those? You said that animals and wind usually spread the seeds, but if almost all of the animals have been hunted out or relocated, then yeah obviously the forest is not going to be able to migrate.
If people were dnd characters she would be a wizard/gunslinger multiclass
