I've heard many duets over the years but Gillian and David's voices blend in a way that can take your breath away, almost as though they were meant to sing together.
Was reading the paper one Saturday night, when this came on tv, had not heard of them, certainly. As soon as I realized what song they were playing, chills going down my spine, I shot up off of the sofa, "What the hell is THIS??!! WHO ARE they??!!" 2005, I think. I've never forgotten that...have seen them perform live about 12 times now...They are SUPREME.
There is nothing, just nothing as sonorous and soulful as a pedal steel ringing in the background of a fine song such as this...Its high strung tones pierce right to the heart...
Blessed to have seen them live in Salina, KS a few years ago. Just pure mugical magic these two make. They were so fn great....but i have a feeling they always are.
When Gillian and David sing and play, it's absolutely magical. They feel the music and song from deep inside and it comes out in their harmonic voices, superb performances when they sing together. They both have such great voice control.
This was the first song I ever heard by them, on tv. I wasn't even paying attention, reading a magazine, I had never heard of them. It made shivers go down my spine. I had to stand up and watch the rest of it. Since then, I've seen them 5 times live. They know the secret, the old-timey thing, what G. Parsons meant when he talked about "cosmic" American music. This song, the first thing I ever heard by them, clinches that. You can't go wrong. Listen to "Time (The Revelator)"
First song I ever heard from Gillian and been a fan evermore. This is one of my fav ever songs. Alway moves my heart and soul. Graham Parson was genius.
💙🌍💙🌏💙🌎💙🙏🦋I LOVE her intro words.....This is Sooo Beautiful🙏💙🙏💙🙏🦋🙏🦋💙ThankYou💙Blessings💙😷2 people playing singing raw naked perfect haunting background wailing silent memories beautiful💙🗽🦋😷
..have sung this often at gigs .... but oh, so wish it was like this.....saw them backalong in Warwick Arts Centre (UK) - reminded me of being in church...what music's all about.....
They do a heart rending, and haunting version of this heart breaking classic tune here! 💔💔💔 Their harmonies are actually much 'smoother' than the Gram & Emmylou original duet on Grievous Angel. Greg is exemplary on the crying 'break machine' as well! 👍👍
Gillian’s wearing it. Or more accurately, the suit that she’s wearing in this video is the one that he wears now. This suit was apparently purchased by Gillian at a garage sale or thrift store sometime in the 90s. She later had one made to match this one that has a skirt and a shirt with a more feminine cut, so she now wears that suit and Dave wears this one. See their video for “The Weekend” for reference.
+Ali Mahmood It's part of her "Nudie" suit. Per Wikipedia: Nuta Kotlyarenko, known professionally as Nudie Cohn, was a Ukrainian-born American tailor who designed decorative rhinestone-covered suits, known popularly as "Nudie Suits".
And they found Chris Ethridge's missing suit, so the suits are back together at the Country Hall of Fame exhibit on west coast country. (Just wish the boys were still with us. Just Chris Hillman left). @@Fordworldrallyfan
I love these guys. But I'm wondering why she swapped the last half of the first verse with the last half of the second verse. The line, "but it makes me feel better each time it begins, calling me home, hickory wind" is a second verse line. Here, it's in the first. And the line, "but now when I'm lonesome I always pretend that I'm getting the feel of hickory wind" is in the first verse of the original. Here, she sings that in the second. I'm loving the song, but wondering.
+lillyandruben No His Suit had Marijuana plants and pills all over it plus it's in the "Country Music Hall of Fame" Where He should be also if they went by How much Influence one made or had or Talent instead of Record Sales and # 1 Hits.
Nope, Gill & Dave had his & her matching suits made. Check out the Warren Hellman Tribute Concert & their video for the song The Weekend, and you can see both suits in all their glory.
Generally I like these two but this is definitely not my favorite version of this song. The original Byrds version with Gram himself is still the standard I think and after that -- Emmylou Harris also has a great version -- most recently the Tuttles have put out an awesome version.
...2022...the year I discovered Gillian and David...the circle is complete...and I go a happy man...
One of Gram Parson's best songs & who could do it better then Gillian Welch & David Rawlings!
The best cover of Gram Parson’s beautiful song!❤❤
I prefer the Tuttles version. This is painfully slow.
@@59seankGillian is the queen of painfully slow singing and that’s why we love her to death.
They do this song so beautifully, it hurts my heart.
These two. Such beauty. Makes my heart burst.
I've heard many duets over the years but Gillian and David's voices blend in a way that can take your breath away, almost as though they were meant to sing together.
wow, its so so so so beautiful, not only the voices but that pedal steel guitar is hauntingly good also
why did this music go away ? Change isn't always good. Old Crow remembers

Outstanding version - love these two !
SO country !! Gillian just owns it. The feels are there.
There is nothing, just nothing as sonorous and soulful as a pedal steel ringing in the background of a fine song such as this...Its high strung tones pierce right to the heart...
Hell yeah
Blessed to have seen them live in Salina, KS a few years ago. Just pure mugical magic these two make. They were so fn great....but i have a feeling they always are.
November 2024 in Ithaca NY. They were astounding
It make me fel better every time i hear this song TY so much
Listening in 2022 from Oak Cliff,TX 💪
David Rawlings guitar work is so perfect and restrained!
he pulls a lot of sound out of that old 1930's Epiphone jazz guitar.
If you take a few moments to stop and listen to this music, you will be richly rewarded.
So sweet
I wish this song could be 30 minutes... this is too good and beautiful

Are you a Gene Clark fan? He had that cosmic secret too.
Yes!!! This this this.
Also why the grateful dead resonates so much...
Americana. Jazz, blues, rock, country, bluegrass.... the sounds of life
I closed my eyes and imagined Gram and Emmylou on harmony vocals... So pure.
Nightingale of sorrow Wow, me too. That was the first name that came to mind. The melodic beat, sounds so much like Gram.
BEST VERSION OF THIS SONG HANDS DOWN!!!

I also, could absorb this all day long.
Most beautiful song EVER!
Wonderful cover of Gram's moving classic!
god, it bears repeated listenings, Gram would love it too I'm sure, respectful as all get out
RIP Gram, god bless, Gilliam & David
Gorgeous. The perfect artists to do this wonderful song.
Everytime these two sing I am covered in goosebumps. Gillian is so beautiful :-)
I wish I could find a DVD of this concert. It was fabulous, so many great artists.
here is the audio - ua-cam.com/video/_LX_G0Qffz4/v-deo.html
Beautiful, these two are great.
So haunting, so beautiful.
The fabulous Greg Leisz on pedal steel. Really does justice to this slooooower tempo of Gram's ode, almost haunting. Greg can do no wrong, in my book.
So beautiful , thank you.
Gram played his grandmother's favorite song, this one, at the grand old opry for her.✌
Love this song, Gram was a great writer.
Such a beautiful song!
Simply the greatest clip
Fabulous version.
stunning......... this is the real thing
This is the definately the best version of this song since Gram died
Beautiful . .
Beautiful
she is just beautiful

Great tribute to GP!
Haunting

outstanding
Love it!!
Rawlings is right. Gillian Welch is a great guitar player. Her rhythm playing is complex, subtle, and nuanced. Her time keeping is rock solid.
On my top ten list
Wow flat beautiful
Very nice song
very cool
the best
So fucking good
What happened to Dave's cowboy suit? What a beautiful song in an immaculate performance. Wow!
Gillian’s wearing it. Or more accurately, the suit that she’s wearing in this video is the one that he wears now. I want this at my funeral.
Oh yes I think this is the one for me.
I like this version very much as well - a song that can stand a few variations - all good - I especially like AJ's version also
Rip gram :)
unreal!!!!!
what year!?!?!
I like this, and the Gram Parsons version with EmmyLou Harris, but my favorite is AJ Lee and the Tuttles.
I agree that the Tuttles with AJ Lee is the best I've heard of this song!
AJ Lee is an absolute phenom
aj lee is great but this is much better imho
I like AJ Lee, but this is the superior version.
whozis2 The Seldom Scene does an incredible job on this one with Emmy Lou Harris
Sweet heart of the rodeo
I wish these two would just cover every song
Cant argue with that.
That's exactly how I always feel.
@tortuga3030 I totally agree with you.
She got a cool jacket.
It's something Gram would have worn.
+Ali Mahmood It's part of her "Nudie" suit. Per Wikipedia:
Nuta Kotlyarenko, known professionally as Nudie Cohn, was a
Ukrainian-born American tailor who designed decorative
rhinestone-covered suits, known popularly as "Nudie Suits".
It's still very Gram-like.
@@jacquesblaque7728 Yes, the Flying Burrito Borothers are all wearing his creations on the cover of "The Gilded Palace Of Sin". 😉

Me too...on m
who's playing pedal steel?
Greg Leisz (Jackson Browne's, and many others' 'go-to' session and touring pedal steel playa!)
this is what angels9if they are real) sound like
I wonder if it is GP's suit?
+lillyandruben No His Suit had Marijuana plants and pills all over it plus it's in the "Country Music Hall of Fame" Where He should be also if they went by How much Influence one made or had or Talent instead of Record Sales and # 1 Hits.

Gil in that nudie suit singing Gram Parsons is the best shit ever....

I sometimes wonder if people who comment have ever heard songs like this done right. Can't anyone just sing the tune the way Gram wrote it?
Somptueuse version.
