Rufus was really upset by the interviewer interrupting them, having a narrow understanding of the characters and asking shallow questions.
This was a bad interview and became a bit painful to watch especially at the end.

Is it bad that I find their two characters to be the most compelling in the series? Don't at all agree with the politics of the regimes they work for but they are much more interesting and two dimensional to me than most of the protaganonists.

I’ve watched a lot of interviews with this cast and this is the first time I’ve seen Rufus act prickly and irritable. I understand that he sees his character as complex and multilayered and doesn’t like being typecast as a villain, but his reaction to the interviewer was a bit harsh. I think Joel felt the same way, which is why he interjected and tried to bring some levity to the discussion. Notice when he got up and put his hand on Rufus’s arm? It’s like he was saying, “Chill, bro, it’s not that serious.” Both of these men are incredible actors. I’m enjoying the show and I hope they enjoy working on it (even though it involves answering annoyingly repetitive questions during press junkets).

I didn't see it as harsh, but just as being honest. I hate to stereotype (but I'm also stereotyping myself here) but I saw his reaction as very British and maybe that's why I didn't see it as harsh. But this press room was a difficult one. It was on the first day of NYCC so I do think that played a part in it too.

Honestly, she was the one who seemed rude to me.
I also found her very superficial in her questions and understanding of the characters and show but not professional nor humble enough to listen to their explenations and consider what they were telling her. For example, she interrupted Joel by asking something that had nothing to do with what he was saying, or we have Rufus explain to her at the beginning of the interview that Smith’s motivation has always been is family and he acted on that in his performance and then at the end she tells him that is performance has changed because Smith’s motivation has changed or something like that, I mean did she listen to them at all?!
Personally I find this kind of attitude very annoying and disrespectful.

@@misstheslayer25 Just to clarify, they were two different people. The one at the start initially wanted to ask a different question but it became what it was. At the end, it was another member of the press. We were at one of the roundtable interviews, so there were about five or six of us there to ask questions :) Many of us were disappointed not to know what Joel was about to tell us.

This is not a superman comic, there aren't "villains"! By the end of Season 2 resistance looked like "villains". Ugh...

Is it not awkward for the Filipino man to play a Japanese villain after everything Japan did in the war? Imagine a Jewish actor playing a German from the war...

They're actors. It's their job to pretend to be someone they're not. You don't necessarily have to come from the same background or experience the same things as the character, especially if there isn't an obvious physical trait difference like a black man playing the role of a white man or vice versa

It is hard to watch, but his frustration is justified. The reporter's question was very badly put and displayed an ignorance that was irritating after all of Rufus's careful explanation. I understand why he responded the way he did, totally. It must be really frustrating to explain the same thing over and over again and have people either not listen or just disregard what you say. But yeah, I still felt myself wanting to back away from the screen, lol. I love Rufus and would not want him to be upset with me that way! But out of all the endless interviews he's done and I've watched for MITHC as well as other things, this is the only time I've ever seen him lose his patience. Again to me that says it was on the reporter. They should have handled that one a lot better. Every other interview he is so gracious and friendly. It's not his fault this time.
