This song come out in 1978 and that was during the time coach Paul Bear Bryant was one of the best college football coaches and Alabama was dominating the sport .
So.. here's the thing I ALWAYS try to keep telling people when they hear Steely Dan. 💯 Steely Dan SOUNDS like they play in jazz clubs. But if you listen to the lyrics?! Steely Dan talks about some of the hardest street shit ever! Hookers, drug addicts, alcoholics, runaways, killers, etc. Steel Dan lyrics are MOSTLY about the "dregs of society". THIS song is about a giant loser looking at his own life and trying to find a reason to not kill himself. And they make beautiful fucking music about how people below notice actually live. 💯😎 And IF the music sucked (which it NEVER has), Donald Fagan would deserve credit for THAT alone. 💯😎
You totally don't understand this song...you're young and haven't yet confronted mortality. They're talking about coming to grips with the inevitability of decline, of deciding to use their time "playing just what they feel" and getting used to the occasional loss, "i want a name when I lose";)
One of my favorite songs of all time❤

This is a masterpiece.
My song. But listen to everything Steely Dan. Nonstop greatness
nonstop greatness - truer words!
I love seeing the younger generation grooving to the best album of the pop rock era.
I mean "I want a name when i lose" is about the most grimy street lyric ever written, honestly. 💯😊
Ya, I'm an old rocker but I will not turn off Steely Dan if it comes on the radio.
The night of the expanding man? Think about that for a minute.

I grew up on Steely Dan, they were always played in the house. I just love good, chilled music. Steely Dan is one of the best.
Funny bc these dudes went to Bard College and came from privilege 😂
